BIG SALES EVENT
II
Two page advertisements, In two
colors, appear in today's Mall Trib
une, announcing some of the special
merchandise values offered during
Ward Week, now being featured at
the Montgomery Ward Company of
thla city. Today preliminary to the
great Ward Week s&e. the organiza
tion of the local store is observing
"courtesy day," giving southern Ore
gon and northern California shoppers
an opportunity to Inspect the fine
showing of merchandise secured for
the big event. Officially, the. Ward
Week sale will be launched Friday
and will continue until Saturday,
April 20.
Some interesting facta concerning
the preparation and actual staging
of this spring's big Ward Week sale
were given by C. D. Bean, manager of
the Medford store. According to Mr.
Bean, six months were spent in pre
paring for the big eight-day event
which will result In savings of more
than a million dollars for American
shoppers. With additional thousands
of salespeople employed throughout
the United States In .Ward stores, the
sale this spring has an added signifi
cance in relieving the unemployment
situation from coast to coast.
Scores of specially trained Ward
buyers, after having carefully sur
veyed the markets of the world, start
ed placing orders months ago. Dur
ing the past 60 days every principal
furniture factory on the Pacific coast
has been running at full capacity
filling orders for this event. More
than one and a half carloads of spe
cial furniture has been received In
Medford alone, giving an Idea of the
tremendous buying power Wards have
used in thla nationally-famous sale.
Transportation, too, will receive a
substantial impetus as a result of
Ward's countrywide sales activity.
These few figures, complied by Mr.
Bean, give an Idea of the great vol
ume of Ward purchases for Ward
Week:
Five thousand seamless Axmtnster
rugs, woven by one manufacturer;
10,000 radio kept two of the world's
largest factories working at full ca
pacity for many weeks; 6,000 washing
machines provided many men with
employment; 2,000 bedroom suites
and 4,000 living room suites were
only a part of the furniture orders
placed; 20,000 auto batteries; 3,500
bicycles; 5,000 occasional chairs; 20,
000 blankets; 60.000 dress shirts; 72,
000 pieces of lingerie; 23,000 work
shoes; 200,000 pairs of hose.
Countless thousands of men's suits
and women's dresses as well as ap
parel for all the family have been
purchased.
. The cotton fleldB of the south, the
fields of the great northwest; cattle,
mines, taw materials from foreign
lands have each played a part in
turning the great wheels of Industry.
Great ocean liners, fast trains, air
planes, telephones and telegraph have
all combined to make this the great
est selling event In our history.

THREE LADS GET
T
Three young men Alva (Sonny)
Mansfield. 19, of Ashland, and Joe
Dallalre and Richard Til ley of this
city, were extended leniency, after
lectures this morning by Justice of
the Peace William R. Coleman. All
have been before local courts before,
and have been beneficiaries of pa
roles. Mansfield was charged with con
tributing to the delinquency of a
minor girl. A friend wanted to take
him to his ranch near Centralis, Wn.,
but Mansfield said he had a chance
at county highway work. He told the
court he had been receiving supplies
from the county commissary, to atd
in the support of his mother and
sister.
The district attorney's office in
formed the court that the 16-year-old
girl had "hitch-hiked" to Ashland
to meet Mansfield, that she remained
out until past midnight to attend
dances, and played hookey from
school. Furthermore the official aald
the pair would "make a spectacle ol
themselves by embracing and kissing
in front of all the kids at a local
school."
Mansfield told the court that when
In trouble last year with a Phoenix
girl, he had seen her no more, "be
cause her father threatened to shoot
me If I came around." He admitted
the threat had dampened the ro
mance. It developed that the father, in
the present case, after seeking the
warrant, had declined to prosecute.
"You are headed for the peniten
tiary, and will make it. if you don't
mend your ways," the court told
Mansfield. "You are evidently eating
off the county, and it's up. to you to
work out the relief, and behave your
self like a man. The court will con
tinue your case, but if you show up
here again, lt will be a different
story." Mansfield promised to mend
his ways.
Dallalre and TUley, charged with
petit larceny, were granted leniency
on recommendation of Chief of Po-'
lice McCredle. TUley Intends, the
police say, to enlist In the forest
army. He was paroled a year ago,
with Dallalre, following entering
DeVoe's. The authorities described
Dallalre as "a good little worker and
hustler who helps hla mother." Nei
ther are "bad boys at heart," the
court was told.
The Justice of the peace talked
kindly and firmly to the lads, and
then suspended any action pending
good behavior. They were warned
not to "appear again In this court."
