NO EASTERN BEER
The drought continued In the city
; of Medford today except at a few
: restauranta and lunch counters,
t whose proprietors motored to Cali
fornia yesterday to bring In small
shipments of "Golden Glow," a brew
' from the Golden State. No beer waa
forthcoming from Portland, San
Francisco or the east. The foam
available was obtained from north
ern California wholesalers who gotn
large supplies In the beginning.
Rumors that eastern beer had ar
rived faded away thia afternoon when
i wholesalers and storage firms were
questioned. They bad no beer and
made no predictions as to when they
1 would have, stating that past prom
I lses had "got them Into trouble"
when the brew failed to arrive.

be transferred to the Lane county
Jail until a few days before the trial.
The order granting the venue directs
that both defendants be held In their
present cells "until further orders of
the court." Banks assumed a more
serious mien at the Thursday after
noon proceedings. He glanced over
the legal papers prepared by counsel
and then passed them to his wife for
her signature. During most of the
proceedings he sat with chin-resting
on his folded hands and in deep
thought.
Tfte state made no resistance to
the change following the comment
of the court that "it Is my Judg
ment no fair and Impartial trial
could be secured here, where an un
usual situation, akin to no murder
trial ever held in the state, perme
ates every nook and corner of the
county, and the air Is heavy with the
cross currents of many prejudices."
Hard to Get Jury Here
The fourt further observed: "You
would be weeks in securing a Jury,
which would offset the expense of
moving the trial to another county."
The court also observed that "the
court, the state and the defense have
a solemn duty to perform In seeing
that the defendants have e fair and
impartial trial they face the most
serious of all criminal charges."
The court also ordered that all
original papers and transcripts In the
murder case be transferred at once
to the county clerk of Lane county,
in the personal custody of Lee M.
Bown, state police captain for the
southern Oregon district. The de
fense waa allowed two weeks 'time to
make ready for trlnl at their own
suggestion. They have the right to
ask further time if they see fit.
Would Spare Strain
The general public, long stirred by
political turmoil and agitation, also
expressed satisfaction that the trial
would be held In another county.
It was felt by many that the change
of venue would spare the county the
fevered emotional strain of the trial,
and the attendant public excitement,
also that a verdict by a Jury drawn
In anoher county, once returned,
would prevent the case from being
a controversial or political issue In
Jackson county for months if not
years.
Judge Sklpworth will retain Juris
diction in the case and will hear It
In his own district. He indicated
he desired to dispose of the trial as
quickly as possible, consistent with
Justice and the law. The trial date
is approximately six weeks after the
murder of Constable PreBcott. Judge
Skipworth and wife, who accompa
nied him here, returned to Eugene
today. He was assigned here on an
affidavit of prejudice filed by Banks
against Judge Wm. Duncan of Klam
ath county.
FOREST WORKERS
Recruiting and selecting the Jack
son county quota for the federal for
est conservation project has been
delegated to the county relief com
mittee by the department of labor,
It waa announced today by James H.
Owen, chairman of the Jackson
county relief committee, upon re
ceipt of official advisements from
Governor Julius L. Meier. The num
ber to be selected has not been made
known, Mr. Owen said.
Arrangements have been made at
the Medford relief headquarters in
the city hall to register all applicants
immediately, who meet the following
requirements:
The applicants must be unemploy
ed destitute single men or single men
that have dependents who are also
destitute.
The applicants must be residents
of Jackson county and between the
ages of 18 and 25.
"All persons who can qualify under
these requirements and want to take
advantage of the forest conservation
work should report for registration at
the Medford relief headquarters at
once," Mr. Owens stated. He added
that "at this time we have no fur
ther Information as to when or
where the men will be assigned to
work or the class of work or com
pensation. Complete Inst rue 1 1 o n i
from the governor are to follow
later."
Mr. Owen also emphasized the fact
that the committee cannot consider
married men, men that are now em
ployed, or men that are not destitute.
Only Jackson county residents will
be registered.

"Great Jasper9' at
Craterian Today
A brand new characterization for
Richard Dlx Is the gay, irresponsible
and utterly Irresistible lover who be
comes known as "The Great Jasper"
In the picture of that title showing
for the first time today at the Cra

Dlx has been Just about every sort
of a rugged hero and adventurer in

all his "adventures" have worn skirts.
Jasper could no more help winking
at women than he could help breath
ing. Having once seen that wicked
wink, no woman could help falling,
and, to Jasper's amazing credit, no
woman regretted. No woman except
his wife. Though he could not be
faithful to her, neither could he stop
loving her and therein Ilea the
drama of "The Great Jasper.".
Wera Engels, recent importation
from Germany, makes her American
picture debut in this film. Edna
May Oliver, Florence Eldrldge, Betty
Furness and others give leading sup
port to Richard Dlx In "The Great
Jasper," an adaptation of Fulton
Ourslers celebrated novel.
