cannot shake off a feeling of lore

Southern France. Psrhaps it is the
howling north wind, which shakes
the haute. Perhaps it ie Lovschlem,
the proprietor. Perhape it ie the
paucity of ouesta there are only
three: Mrs. Felicia Byng of
Omaha Father Bobart. a red
haired priest, and an interesting
American oirl named Sue Tally.

SUNDEAN'S ERRAND
MT FRIGHTENED Tfoltor Half
rose; we were silent a moment.
Then the noise recurred, and we re
laxed. It was a shutter banging In
the Increasing wind.
"Yes, I've Just come from Russia,'
I went on. "An old friend of mine,
Jack Dunning, and 1 arranged to
meet here for a trip through South
ern Spain. I'm a week ahead of
time."
The girl nodded, and after a mo
ment asked: "What do you think of
the hotel?"
"It's rather large In the winter.
Isn't It? The handful of guests must
rattle around like so many peanuu."
"We do rather rattle around. Espe
elally when the summer staff Is dis
missed. Just now there are only the
cook, one porter and one maid, the
manager, and Madame Lovschlem,
bla wife. And you and Mrs. Byng
and a priest. And myself, of course.
It Is very quiet and lonely In- the
winter."
I must hare looked a question, for
she added: "I have been here about
a year. You see my mother was 111
and died here. Madame Lovscblem
and her husband hare been rery
kind to me and to my mother."
As It she wished to change the
subject, she told me about the hotel
around my wrists and put me In the
back seat of the car. He was hurried
and 1 think frightened at what he'
was doing, and of course I struggled.
"npHPN he got Into the front seat
land drove and drove and drove.
I thought we were miles from Ar
mene. I was In a panic, naturally,
but I worked so frantically that I
got my hands loose and the scarf

It had been, she said, an old and
rery elegant family residence before
being bought from Its noble owners,
and converted Into a tourist hotel
some years before,
'"VF course." she said, "It has been
"changed from time to time, dec
orations renewed. There Is a private
salon next door that has the original
old satin brocade on the walls. The
room is seldom opened, but you
might like to see It There's a piano
In It, as big as a barn, on which a
long ago Pope Is said to have sung a
mass. I doubt that however."
I made a sound of agreement, and
he went on swiftly:
"There's a story about these old
(looks, too; that they were bought In
preparation for a visit from Napo
leon. He liked clocks, yon know; but
I donbt that one, too. Even the most
passionate elock lover wouldn't
want halt a hundred of them. Oh,
you have the sword clock. It's the
only one In the house."
Her pink fingers touched the lit
tle sword and slid It gently out of
the bronse soldier's grasp, I must
have looked surprised, for she
laughed for the first time and flour
ished It "Didn't you know It was
loose? It's sharp too," She ran her
linger tips along the edge. "Like a
dagger."
She stood there touching the toy
word. Her bright head was bent
Her velvet coat was buttoned as
tight as a basque to her chin. Its
skirt fitted her slender waist and
hips and then flared long and full.
Something to my astonishment I
heard myself saying:
"I want to help you. Won't you let
me?"
She replaced the little sword
lowly. After a time probably only
a few seconds she went on gravely:
"Perhaps I'd better tell you what
happened tonight It must have been
around 10 o'clock when 1 went out.
I was restless and wanted tr walk In
the wind a little before trying to go
to sleep. I often take walks In the
evenings; there's never been any
danger at all.
"Tonight a car passing me stop
ped. A man got out I started to walk
away, but he caught me. He tied
lomethlng over my mouth and
She held the toy sword.
from my face. It must have been
more than an hour that he drove.
Finally he stopped."
She stopped, too, and took a long
breath. "I had planned what 1 would
do. As he got out the front seat I
got out the back seat, on the oppo
site side, and ran. The wind was
blowing, and It was dark, and he
didn't hear me open the door, and
It was a moment before he found 1
was not there.
"Then I saw a light, and It was
the light at the entrance of the hotel.
I didn't stop to think how strange It
was, I just ran. The gate was locked,
of course; but I know the way In. He
was niter mo."
Somotlilng must have come from
my throat then, for she stopped,
gave me a questioning look, and
then went on,
"He could see me under the small
light Ho wns so close, and thero was
no light In the hotol, and he, too,
know the wny Into the court Then
I saw your light I ran Into the
shadow and up the stairway. I
think he wasted time looking In the
courtyard for me.
"1 don't think he heard me call to
you; the wind was too loud. But I'm
afraid he saw me against the light
You can c your light from the
court you know, when the door Is
open. And that's that's all. Except
that I want you to tell no ono espe
cially the Lovschloms."
"Who was the man?"
"I don't know."
"It wasn't Lovschlem?"
"Oh, no!" she cried. "It wasn't
Lovschlem, (Ie Is so fat, you know.
This man wasn't fnt."
I said that the fellow ought to be
killed. I believe I said I would enoy
the Job of doing It
"I've troubled yon enough," she
said. "I can't thank you. Now I'm
going."
"But wait Look here. Are you
sure you'll be safo? I can't let you
go like this."
"I'm quite alright I shan't go for
walks on the bridge again, at night
anyway. And there's no need to call
Madnme. I'll lock my door." An ex
pression of consternation orosBed
her face. "My koy." she said, "I left
my key on the board In the lobby."
"I'll get It. What number Is it?"
"Nineteen. But"
"Don't leave until I return."

Information regarding the cent-ami

Numerous reservations were being

many taking advantage of the excep

Many attractions await the excur

the tickets being good for twelve days
from April 13th makes the rates par

that many are planning to take ad
