MERCHANDISING
MQFFATT TOPIC
FORJOTARlAi
An intensely interesting talk on
the problems of modem merchandis
ing was given by John Moffatt of
Mann's Department store at the reg
ular weekly meeting of the Medford
Rotary club today in the basement
banquet room of the Hotel Medford,
Business today was likened to a ship
by Mr. Moffatt. Sailing along on the
smooth waters during the bounteous
days of prosperity, the ship of busi
ness has encountered the severs
storms of recent depression times.
The many errors and troubles is
modern merchandising are like bar
nacles on the bottom of a ship and
must be removed before smooth sail
ing Is again enjoyed, h said.
One of the greatest fallacies is re
tali business during the past few
years has been lack ,of care in pur
chasing on the part of the store buy
ers, Moffatt said. The store of today
is the purchasing agent for its com
munity. Now, more than ever before,
a retailer must depend upon the
good will of his, trade, necessitating
the utmost care in choosing his mer
chandise with the thought always m
mind that his patrons must receive
the finest quality merchandise and
the very latest Is style at real value
giving prices.
Another important change which
must be made by merchandisers to
day is to simplify saies system and
concentrate on price groupings moat
appealing to the consumer. Mr.
Moffatt cited legislation now under
consideration in Washington to end
the disastrous policies of "loss-leaders.'
Proposed bills will give the
manufacturer the right to set the
retail price of commodities, a correc
tion of an important business trouble
in the opinion of the speaker.
Volume sales and quantity turn
over of stocks do riot necessarily
spell profits and good business, llr.
Moffatt said. Statistics compiled by
the Harvard school of business re
search show many concerns adopting
the policies of volume and rapid
turn-over are suffering more than
their more conservative contempor
aries. The next regular meeting of the
Rotary club promises to be an inter
esting one with a general round table
discussion of Mr. Mofftt talk, la
this open forum, business men Ides- t
tilled with the local club will ex-
cnange views on many lmporisiiv
business questions.
Past District Northwest Governor
Henry Manny made a short talk on
the conditions of club in the north
west. John Peri invited the mem
bers and guests to enjoy the "shoot"
scheduled to be held at the Medford
Gun club traps next Sunday and Ro
land Hubbard called the Rotarisns
attention to the sixth annua Oregon
Horns Products banquet which will
be held Tuesday, April 18tn. A fine
dinner has been arranged, Mr. Hub
bard said, and tickets will be avail
able for 50 cents.
The visiting Ro tartans at today's
luncheon were Henry Manny of
Seattle, William Simkins of Ban
Francisco and Ernest Oiistrap, for
merly of Eugene who is sow business
manager of the Mail Tribune. , W. B.
Hollingworth and Bd. Austendorf of
Klamath Falls and Herb. Grey were
guests.
