AT NEXTMEETING
At last night's meeting of tha
Ellu' lodge plana were divulged tor
the big Elks' crab feed to be held
-next Thursday evening at 6:30 at
the Ellta' temple". The committee
appointed to handle the affair la P.
C. Blgbam, N. S. Young. Elmer N.
Chlldera. John A. Walte, J. Ft. Blerma,
B. H. Sleight. Charlea B. Gay, Jack
Hill. Harry Barneburg and Van K.
Gilbert. Twelve dozen crabs have
been ordered and side dishes of
cheese and crackers, pickles, olives
and other relishes will be on hand.
As a thirst quencher the usual cof
fee and milk will be supplemented
by a barrel of the new 3.2 per cent
beer, delivery of which has been as
sured the committee. All Elks In
good standing will be eligible to st
tend, and the affair promisee to rival
the annual salmon bake In attend
ance.
Officers for the present year were
Installed last night by W. H. Mc
Oowan as follows: J. F. Fllegel, ex
alted ruler; Richard Crowson, es
teemed leading knight; Stanley Sher
wood, esteemed loyal knight: Earl
York, esteemed lecturing knight: W.
A. "Frazler, secretary: Robert Norrls,
treasurer; N. S. Young, tiler, and H.
N. Butler, trustee. Tor the appointive
offices, Rev. Wm. B. Hamilton was
reappointed chaplain; J. R. Blerma,
reappointed organist; E. W. Winkle,
reappointed esquire, and Harold
Woods, was named Inner guard.
Immediately following Installation
ceremonies the high school band, un
der the direction of P. Wilson Walt,
entertained with a concert of the
numbers they will play at the state
high school band coneet. The band
showed the result of the hard work
the members have put In and their
rendition of the difficult numbers
played was of first class and won
the enthusiastic applause of the Elks
present.
It was announced that T. E. Dan
iels, first exalted ruler of Medford
lodge, will preside at the lodge session
next week following the crab feed,
and that ha is arranging special en
tertainment features. It Is the plan
of Exalted Ruler Fllegel to give each
past exalted ruler of the lodge the
opportunity to preside at at least one
meeting this year.

NEW YORK, April 7. (AP) Min
ing and oil shares enlivened a quiet
session of the stock market today. For
the list aa a whole, net changes were
narrow, but oils had their best day
in weeks, and Homestake mining,
often a spectacular performer, out
did Itself with a Jump of nearly 20
points. The closing tone was irregu
lar. Transfers approximated 950,000
shares.

RED SNOW PLANT
IS EXPLAINED BY
"Bloody rain," "red snow" and
"fiery frost" are the names accorded
a peculiar reddish-purple sort of
alga, microscopic water plant which
has been noticed in the Medford
drinking water, according to rroies
aor Edward M. Hussong of the Senior
high school biology department.
"Although the Jelly-like masses are
visible In drinking water that stands
for a. few days, it Is absolutely harm
less," Mr.'Hussong stated. 'IThe plant
life, commonly found in the Arctic
region and on the glaciers of high
mountains, has been seen in large
areas on the snow fields of Norway,
the Alpa and Himalaya mountains,
and lately has been noticeable on
the upper slopes of Mount Rainier.
So far as I have heard, It has never
been reported from a locality so far
south and of such low altitude as
we hsve here.
"A few spores of thl alga are In
our city water, borne down from the
slopes of Mount Pitt, no doubt; and
we have grown larger masses of It in
our aquarium, which have been a
pushing study for severat weeks. This
Is the third time my attention has
been called to It," says Mr. Hussong.
The plant la known scientifically
as Spharella nivalis, the "red snow
plant" Anyone Interested in seeing

naptain Salisbury, noted explorer and lecturer, was the guwt speaker at
the Medford Shrine club luncheon today at the Hotel Medford. The vet
eran traveler delighted a large assembly of Shrlnera with an Intensely
Interesting description of hLs travels through -the South Sea. Java. Su
matra. Ball and other Islands of the Dutch East Indies as well as Abys
sinia and other African lands, pointing out the custom and modes of
living of people who inhabit those far-away lands.
"I would suggest travel for those

plorer said. "It has been my obser
vation that the depression affected
this country later than any qther. and
America la recovering more rapidly
than other lands. In fact, many
things which we would consider bare
necessities in depression periods here
would be -welcomed as luxuries at all
times in scores of foreign lands."
Captain Salisbury sketched briefly
the habits of cannibals and head
hunters who populate the remote lsl
lands of the South Pacific. His In
teresting experiences in Java, Suma
tra and Ball and contact with the
Andaman pigmies were mentioned
and, as a climax of the captain's ad
dress, he told of his visit to the vast
country of Abyssinia In Africa, where,
through a misunderstanding on the
part of Abyssinian couriers, he was
welcomed as the President of the
United States.
Captain Salisbury's travel picture,
"Ra-Mu," now playing at the Fox
Craterlan, was mentioned by Harold
Brown in hi Introduction of the lec
turer. This picture, according to
Captain Salisbury, ahuwa lift strange
lands referred to in his address be
fore the Shrine club today.
Tonight the members of "HtlUh
temple. Shrlnera aflllated with other
temples, and their wives will enjoy
a "pot-luck" dinner and dance at the
Ashland Masonic temple.

uncandled stocks that some of the
former more active buyers hare prac
tically quit purchasing auppltes at
country points. Lack of uniformity
In the prices hase never been so
generally shown as during the last
couple of weeks, with retailers act
ually offering supplies at prices that
are lower than what the country was
getting or expecting for eggs, there
was an entire lack of profit In hand
ling. This condition appears due mostly
to 'the continuance of the big run
of country or farm eggs which are
Sbelng traded to retailers for goods
and then reaolt to Portland whole
salers or retailors below their actual
worth because the cash Is needed.
