PASSES, AGED 86
Birth Arthurs. Oregon pioneer of
3853, pawed away at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. W. R. Lamb, near
Gold Hill on the Old Stage Road.
Thursday at the age of 86.
She was born at Knoxvllle, 111.,
and at the age of 6 years started
with her parents by wagon train for
Oregon. Forty wagons composed the
train, but as they proceeded they be
came separated until there were but
Jour families In the caravan and at
times were surrounded by hundreds
of Indians, adding to the hazards of
their perilous Journey, but by care
Jul maneuvering managed to avoid
disaster.
Upon reaching Oregon. Mrs. Ar
thurs became 7 years of age as they
crowed the Cascade mountains. It
was here where the wagons were
dismantled and let down over the
xlm roc Ice by ropes' and tackle.
They came by Walla Walla. Wash.,
then a small trading post, and land
ed In Linn county, Oregon, where
the town of Bhedd now la and where
her father took up a donation claim.
Sarah McAllister resided on the
farm there until her marriage In 1862
to William Arthurs, and to them
were born nine children. Ten years
later they moved to Walla Walla.
Wash., and came to Jackson county ;
In 1808, making their home In the
Applegste for many years and later
In eastern Oregon. Upon their re
turn, Mr. Arthurs died here In 1020.
since which time she had resided
with her children. Those left are
C. A. Arthurs of Idaho; Olive Shel
ton, Nya, Ore., and Mrs. W. R.
lamb. Central Point. Mrs. Arthurs
was a 'great grandchild of Daniel
Boon
Funeral services will be conducted
by Rev. D. R. Millard at the Conger
chapel at 3 p. m. Sunday. Inter
ment In Medford I. O. O. P. cemetery.

new quilt. At noon a covered dish
luncheon was served, after which the
regular business meeting was held.
The report of the gift of a new
quilt to Stater Edith Wtdman was
given, the presentation of same hav
ing tsken place at the anniversary
dinner and program Saturday.

Jes. Mlttelsteadt.

had recently left a nursing home

Endeavor society are practicing on a
missionary dramatization for a rally
at the Ashland Christian church Sun
day afternoon. The winner will be
chosen to represent Crater Lake union
at the atate convention at Eugene in
April.
Thursdny club met with Mrs. Marie
Furry last week with a good attend
ance. Several tables of bridge were In
play. Next meeting will be April 14
for business. The hostesses Thurs
day were Mrs. Dorothy Loffer and
Mrs. Marie Furry.
