relief committee, who ha been active
In prosecuting 25 persona receiving

ance, was shot and killed at Weat
Frankfort today by several men who
fired at him from an automobile,
and a rove away.
Two men standing with Ward were
wounded. Their names could not be
learned Immediately.
Sheriff Browning Robinson said he
would start an Investigation of the
shooMrg on the theory that it might
havo been a reprisal for Ward's ac
tlvi. in aiding In the prosecution
of tl' charity fraue.
SJ-.erjff Robinson and his deputies
entered the headquarters of the Pro
gressive Miners' union at Zeigler to
day and confiscated six revolvers.
They made no arrests.

After several weeks ot hunting with
his trained dogs, Anton Ring of Ash
land has succeeded In capturing three
panthers and a bob cat or two on
Star Gulch. Mr. Ring made a kill last
week when he came down from the
head of the gulch with a panther that
measured eight feet, also a bob cat
John Delvln,,who has been making
his home here with his sister. Mrs.
Miles Cantrall. underwent an opera
tion at the Sacred Heart hospital at
Medford last Saturday but Is reported
as getting along nicely.

four Ashland high school girls taking

Thelma Good, who gove a soldier's
dance: Betty Dean and Jane Elam.

The program put on March 10 by
the Medford Chamber of Commerce
and Medford Gleemen made a decided
hit with the large attendance. There
were visitors present from many dis
tricts, and all seemed to enjoy the
entertainment.
The power line through this dis
trict which Is one of the oldest in
the valley Is being rebuilt by a crew
of Copco workmen. New poles being
set are farther apart but much long
er than those being replaced, are
heavily treated with a pre servant and
set seven feet In the ground.
