Walter J. Jones, mayor of Rogue
RiYr, sought for the paat week upon
an indictment as one of the Jackson
county ballot thieves, was arrested
at Ms home by state police shortly
after daylight this morning. Hia ap
prehension brings fctwUst of known
"Good Government Congress" mem
ber wanted down to one. The latter
!s Oiaude Ward, brother-in-law of I.
A. Banks, slayer of Constable Prea
eott. 1U at his home iih flu, it is
reported. He will be arrested as soon
as Ws health will permit. '
Jones Flitted Ahout.
State police say that since Monday
they have received information that
Jones was "ducking and dodging
around the north end of the county.
They have definite information that
he waa in three different localities
since Monday. The authorities also
state that they have information
showing Jones was in touch with hla
family He waa arrested aa most of
Rogue River slept. Jones was in bed.
He claimed he had a cold.
Jen as was brought to the count?
jail this morning. The jailers say
he ate a hearty breakfast, and was
apparently in good health. Be will
be examined by a physician today,
Jones has been at liberty on $5000
bonds, with J. T. Thomas and Nick
Rossi of Ashland an sureties. The
district attorney's office announced
yesterday that unless Jones waa pro
duced today, steps to cancel, the bond
would be taken. Jones' bond has
been fixed at $7600. -

Following the return of the secret
indictments on the ballot stealln?,
Jonea has been the object of a wide
search. He could not be located at
his nsual haunta or home last Thurs
day or Friday, Saturday, at the sur
render of County Judge Earl H, Fehl,
Attorney Enright and VortSchmalz
announced that Jones waa in Fort
land and would appear voluntarily
Monday morning at 10 o'clock. When
Jones failed to do so his counsel an
nounced he was sick 1n a Portland
hospital. A check of the leading
hospitals failed to '.orate him. Then

gation of the rates and charges of
the California Oregon Power com
pany will be resumed at Medford and
later at Klamath Falls within a short
time, it waa announced today by the
public utilities commissioner, Charles
M, Thomas,
Engineers who were busy at Med
ford were taken off the job about
two months ago because they were
needed !n Portland on the North
western case, it waa announced. At
the present time they are working in
Coos county investigating the Moan
tain States Power company.
Engineers will be returned to Med
ford shortly, after which they will
be transferred to Klamath Falls to
continue the investigation.

statement explaining that Constable
George J, Prescott, murdered a week

serve the warrant. The warrant, with
others, was issued and signed by the
county cluerk upon orders of the cir
cuit court. The district attorney's
office had nothing to do with this
phase of the legal proceedings Its
duties were centered in the present
ment of the evidence upon which the
ballot theft indictments were re
turned. -
Criticism Unjust
There has been some criticism be
cause the sheriff's office was not giv
es the warrant to serve upon Banks,
It is based solely upon this unjust,
unwarranted conjecture.

iff, for any reason, cannot serve a
warrant, that it be placed in the
hands of the constable and Issued is
his name. . .
Constable Prescott, when the war
rants were placed! ln his hands, called
to his aid three state policemen and
proceeded to i&s Banks home. Two
of the state police were stationed at
the back door to prevent any escape,
Bgt. James O'Brien went with Con
stable Prescott to the front door. Mrs,
Edith B. Banks opened the door as
far as the door chain would permit,
