LAST YEAR'S SAD
STATE OF GIANTS
REMEDIED, BELIEF
Defensive Forces of 1933
Edition in Good Shape
Except in Hurling Division
Boast Sturdy Reserves
By PAUL ZIMMERMAN
. Associated Press Sports Wrjter
LOS ANGELES. March 33. (AP)
With their defensive fences In good
repair, save perhaps on the pitching
hilltop, the New York Giants look to
the 1933 National league pennant race
with a feeling that last year'a sad
story will not be retold.
Manager BUI Terry has built up a
sturdy reserve back of his regular In
field, mindful of the Injuries which
rather messed up things In 1931 and
1933. He has put new power Into the
outfield and more life back of the
plate, leaving the only question mark
written after hla hurling corps.
Strong Infield.
The Giants' infield appears espec
ially strong. Travis (Stonewall) Jack
son has been more active than ever
at ahortstop since his legs were over
hauled during the winter. Hughle
Crltz confidence in hla once ailing
arm has been restored and Johnny
Vergez has Improved his work at third
and at the plate.
Terry completea what he is willing
to call It any time, the best Infield
In the league. He has been clubbing
the ball at a pace which promises
another year like that of last season
when he hit .355. His work at first
has been of the same sturdy caliber.
Not satisfied with this, Terry has
added a few reserve strands to the
fence. To those who sought Sam
Leslie In the winter deals he turned
a dear ear. While the big Misslasipplan
may not have much opportunity to
take his manager'a place, he will be
an active pinch hitter again.
James Understudies Crltz.
Then there Is Byrne James, built
much on Crltz lines, for second base
as Hughle's understudy, and the big
blond John Ryan, a great fielder at
third, short or second, but a bit weak
on hitting.
Terry figured he lost too many
games behind the plate In 1932, but
predicts that this won't happen again.
with Gus Mancuso, a peppery little
catcher with a fine throwing arm
and lots of power In his hitting, and
Paul Richards, purchased from In-,
dlanapolls of the American Associa
tion, to carry most of the burden.
Mancuso went to the Giants In a
trade with the St. Louts Cardinals.
Davis Ac-e Recruit.
Georgo Davis, who hit .309 as lead
off man with the Phillies last year
Is the most Important addition to
the outfield. Melvln Ott, a 24-year-old
veteran of eight years with the
club. Is still looked upon as one of
the best outer gardeners of the cir
cuit and Joe Moore probably will fill
the other spot.
An effort has been made to help
solve the pitching problem with lots
of hard work during the spring train
ing grind. Carl Hubbell, Fred Fitz
slmmons, Leroy Parmelee, Glenn
Spencer, Ray Starr, Adolfo Luque,
Bill Shores, Hal Schumacher and Her
man Bell seem to be the best choices
for a full season of activity.

FACES WHITE ON ELKS
UN EVENT PITS
CLEVER FIGHTERS
Medford ring fans are looking for
ward to something out of the ordi
nary when Frankie Monroe, Klam
ath's main bid for fist to fame, meets
Herb White. Butte Falla pride, in
the main event at the Elks club
Thursday evening.
White, a natural-born fighter, has
made rapid strides since his first ap
pearance In a- local arena and In re
cent battles has demonstrated ability
to take care of himself In the ring
with Just about any lad his weight
outside the big time. Monroe has
consistently cleaned up In the Klam
ath country and on hla Invasions of
other battle grounds. He Is as fast
as White, packs a vicious wallop and
knows where to apply the kayo clout.
Experts who have had an opportu
nity to Judge as to the relative merits
of the two boys, seem inclined to
give White a slight edge on clever
ness and boxing ability. On the
other hand, word from Klamath Falls
has It that Monroe makes up for any
deficiency In cleverness by a rugged
style of fighting, constantly boring
in, and ability to take a punch if
the opportunity offers for landing
one of his own.
In addition to the White-Monroe
brawl there will be four 4 -round pre
liminaries of stellar caliber. BlUy
Dale and Bob Irwin mix In the 130
pound class; Johnny "Kid" Bell
meets Ernie Daniels, st 145 pounds;
Stanley Reed will swap socks with
Carl Crapo at 148 pounds, and Tony
Ortls will fight Jimmy compagne in
the 120-pound class.
The smoker Is being staged for Elka
and their friends and will be the
first fistic entertainment In Medford
for several months. The boys have
been matched by Promoter Mack
Llllard, most of them being Imported
from Klamath Falls.
