Bible or Booze
(By E. O. Oldenburg.)
"And this la the condemnation,
that light la oome Into the world,
and men loved darkness rather than
light because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth
the light, lest his deeds should be
reproved." John 3-19-30.
With the ominous rumble of the
returning beer wagon or truck and
all the old business connected there
with, there also return pictures of
the sinister characters ever Blinking
tn Its shadows.
The hidden things that flourished
In the shadow of the liquor business
whloh alone made It so much worse
than the "wine and strong drink'
mentioned In the Bible that to men
tion the two In the same breath is
nothing less than Diasphemy.
Not only wss It the prolific source
of corrupt politics hut things far
worse found snug shelter behind It;
international evlle that operated di
rectly through many of the saloons,
especially In the large cities. For
those who remember not to remind
them at this critical period were
treason to the American people.
For years thousands of girls, four
to five thousand had disappeared
suddenly and without trace here In
America, and other thousands from
European nations. The thing had
grown to such alarming proportions
that finally the governments were
drlvon to concerted action and there
was revealed the well-organized. ' In
ternational "white slave traffic." Olrls
disappearing from America wer. found
In other lands: European girls were
discovered here, under conditions
which cannot possibly be stated in
cold type.
It was also discovered that the
average spon of life of these poor
creatures, after being so vilely be
trayed wss four yesrs. Hesdquarters
for the "traffic" were located In Ber
lin. The traffic did not stop head
quarters were moved to a South
American city. ' Records will reveal
that leaders In the business loudly
protested "Interfering with their
business." They hsv. ever since
swelled the babel about Interfering
with the liquor business. Saloons
with dance halls attached were a
strong source of supply.
Another thing that America has
for many years courageously stead
fastly and often alon., fought with
every resource at the command of
changing governmenta la the inter
national narcotic ring. Almost ever
since then, has been a League of
Nations they have plsyed and toyed
with this thing. Again and again
America hsa almost held them up to
ridicule and driven them to action.
But It waa half-bearted at Beat and
accomplished nothing, because rt was
not meant to. The reason la that
leading nations of the league draw
large revenues from ths trsfflc. How
shockingly the thing has revealed It
self but recently almost In our yeijr
midst. Ever the saloon ha been a
chief hiding place fov these horror
that allnk In the shadow, and It ever
will te. "But there will be no sa
loon.' says you Csll it grogshop if
you want to, but a skunk by any
other name Is still as fragrant. Br in I
back the traffic and you return It
attenaant evil. These monsters thit
slink in the darkness with the re
turning liquor trafflo move their
ambush from which the; :;U close
to our very home.
"And thl 1 th condemnation that
tight Is come into the world, and
men loved darkness rather than llgh.,
because their deed were evil. For
every one that doeth evil hateth the
light, lest bis deed should be re
