THE JOLLY KAID
rrB Raid Abd'allab Karlm, seated
upon h!e cushions In the Lady
Zalnnb'a chamber, laughed merrily
Us famous laugb, that hearty, deep
cheated, lull-throated laugb which
shook him from head to foot, and
which so rarely Inspired a sense of
amusement and Inclination to laugb
ter, In the hearer.
"Ha, ha, thou Desired of Emper
ors, thon Moon at my Delight that
know'st no wane, what salth the
Prophet Himself (on whom be
peace) and he, Allah witness,
knew something of women what
salth her
"Well, what does he sayr In
quired the Lady Zalnub, humoring
her lord with smiles, and wonder
ing whether. In the end, he would
stick a knife In her, or have her
thrown front the battlements In a
sack. Better that, perhaps, than
(row old, and wither In neglect,
I "What salth he on that interest
ling subjeot, my loveT" ohutkled the
Kald. "Listen and hear. He said:
! "Oh ye assembly ot women, give
alms, yes, though It be of your oma
'ments of gold and silver, for verily
f are mostly for Hell on the Day u(
'Jndgment," and the jolly Kald again
boared with laughter,
I The Lady Zalnub sniffed.
! "Well, meantime, you listen to
what I say, and so the further post
tone your own day ot Judgment
Beware of this Jules Mallgnl, son
of your servant and of your sister.
Why has Pedro Mallgnl brought him
heret"
"To learn to be, in his turn, my
trusted agent and servant and
friend, and those ot Ralsul, my son.
As Pedro Mallgnl's father was to
my father on whom be peace and
as Pedro Mallgnl baa been to me, so
shall Pedro Mallgnl's son be to my
son, a devoted and faithful , . ."
"Faithful perhaps," sneered the
Lady Zalnub.
"And when has Pedro Mallgnl
been less than faithful; given me
anything but good advice; true and
full Information; the best rifles
tbat . . ."
"At a price," again sneered the
Lady Zalnub.
"At a price, woman? And who
does anything save at a price?
Bhould he risk 'eath or Imprison
ment for nothing? Did not Pedro's
father bring Pedro here, that be
might know and serve me, even as
Pedro has brought his son that
I..."
"Beware ot that son, I say," re
peated the woman doggedly.
"I heard you twice and thrice J
heard you oh Delight ot Mine Eyes.
Do not become ths Abhorrence of
Mine Ears. A little yon weary me."
And the Kald rose to his foot.
"It Is not well to weary me," he
added mildly, and the La'dy Zalnub
thlvared slightly at her husband's
kindly tone.

Casting herself at bis feet, sht
begged her lord to be seated, prom
ising him amendment, obedience,
and great entertainment.
But remarking that, although he
had Intended to stay for the remain
der of the day, he was constrained
by her distressing weaiiBomenesa to
leave It, the Kald strode away, fox
he had an Important engagement.
Thus It was a moment not mors
than an hour later than the Urns
appointed, that he entertd bis coun
cil chamber, attended by bis son,
Ralsul; bis 'rlend and agent, the
Sefior Pedro Mallgnl; his agent's
son, Mr. Jules Malgnl: hi confi
dential scribe and secretary, Abo
Tallb Zerhoun: mighty Ibrahim the
Lion, bis gigantic bodyguard: and
the stern anL stalwart commander-in-chief
of Ma fighting men, Vahom
med All el Amln, Mahommed the
Trustworthy, Mahommed the Reli
able. Seating himself on a handsome.
If somewhat dirty, divan, the Kald
courteously signified his pleasure
that the others should be seated
also, and bade Aba Tallb, -he scribe,
go and Inforrr the visitor who had
arrived yesterday (on Sefior Pedro
Mallgnl's recommendation and per
sonal guarantee), tbat the Kald sat
In audience, and would receive him.
"'To strangers and wayfarers be
kind,' saltb the Koran," observed the
Kald, and laughed meaningly,
"He Is undoubtedly a stranger
and something of a wayfarer by
now," smiled Pedro Mallgnl, "as he
has come deviously hither from Ger
many by way of Egypt, Tunis and
Algeria."
"And I shall undoubtedly be kind,"
laughed the Kald again,
A tew minutes later the scribe
returned, accompanied by a tall,
thick-set, broad-shouldered man,
dressed us an Arab, his bearded
face sunburnt and weather-beaten.
In Arab fashion and speech, he
saluted and greeted the Kald and
the assembled company.
The Kald clapped his bands loud
ly; servants entered at the signal,
and were bidden to bring coffee,
mint-tea and cigarettes.
"Perhaps, being a foreigner, our
guest would prefer strong drink ol
the foreigners?" Inquired the Kald
courteously.
The stranger signified that be
would be loth to offend bis host's
eyes and delicate nostrils with the
sight snd scent of the forbidden and
abhorrent drink.
The Kald laughed merrily, and the
stranger eyed him thoughtfully the
while.
"Well," said the Kald. "as to that,
1 can bear It, 1 can bear 1L In fact,
to speak tbe truth which Is ever
pleasant and natural to my lips
I have tasted It Yea sometimes 1
drink It . , . And yot, on the other
hand, I do not drink It, I never

"A hard saying, Lord Kald,"
mused the stranger, "A riddle, in
fact"
"Yes," agreed the Kald. 'The so

In the ensuing conversation and
negotiation, the Kald showed him
self the keen man of business thi

The visitor or emissary, on tht
other hand, proved less competent
and, on tbe few points upon which
they differed, was, without great dif
ficulty, outmanoeuvred, overborne
and defeated.
