Chapter 11
"HOW 8HOULD I FA1LT"
"IlfE shall really burn our boats
behind us by doing that,"
mused Sergeant Major Vittorelll,
till perhaps a little doubtfully, as he
tood before Major Rlccoll, the same
day. In the but used by the latter
when he visited the post.
"We shall. Are you afraid, Vlttor
elllT You a Corslcan?"
"I am atrald of nothing, mon Com-
mandaut," replied Vittorelll, with
' more truth than modesty. "But It
would break my beart 11 you failed."
"Fall! I? I am a Man of Destiny,
and how should I fall? Once Inside
the citadel, everything will be easy.
Getting Inside has been the difficulty
tor the last thousand years. Na
ture has made the place Impregna
ble, and man has Improved on Na
ture's handiwork . , And we are
going to march In unopposed. Not
merely unopposed either but ac
tually Invited."
"A spider's web, mon Comman
dantr "Well? Are we files? Or are we
wasps, hornets?"
"And the men, mon Comman
dant?" . ventured Vittorelll, who
though Ignorant, rasb, egotistical
and Impetuous, aa well as being the
fantastically devoted and admiring
disciple of Rlccoll, was sano and pos
sessed of a shrewd peasant mother
wit and common sense. "Can we be
certain that all the N.C.O.'s. corpo
rals and Ugionnaira will be amen
able, obedient?"
"It will be a bad day for anyone
wbo la not, Vittorelll," smiled Rlc
coll. "It would be a bad day for us. mon
Commandant the day on which
ome of them, even a minority of
them, decided to remain er true to
thelr-er. . ."
"Decided not to throw In their
lot with mine and seise their glori
ous chance, the chance ot rising
from slavery io power, position,
wealth? Only fools, clods, cowards,
weaklings . . ."
"There are such people, mon Com
mandant."
"Yes as Oaptaln Voulet discov
ered when he tried to found bis Em-
' plre of the Sahara in 1897. But be
was mad, ot course. Hopelessly
mad. A megalomaniac. And then he
had a partner, too. Captain Oban
olne, who failed him. That was
where Voulet went wrong one of
his mistakes, anyhow.
- "And we can learn something
from the mistakes of Voulet And
then again he was dealing with stu
pid unambitious officers, and was
compelled to show bis hand too soon.
Bad luck and bad management
- ruined bis scheme; and part ot his
bad luck that be bad no Inaccessible
Impregnable base from which to
operate. He simply went out Into the
blue out Into the desert and you
cannot found an Empire on sand,
and direct It from under a palm
tree.
"Here we (hall have tor our base
and tbe heart ot our empire a clta
. del, a city, and a country that haa
never been conquered.
"Yes, Captain Voulet was both un
lucky and a fool. I am a man of
destiny and not a fool. Fate has led
me here to the very spot, and created
the very circumstances necessary for
the fulfilment ot that destiny."
"Without doubt, mon Comman
dant. But tbe men? It seems to me
that success will depend upon one of
two things; on the one hand wheth
er the ligtonnalret are cep; In Igno
rance long enough; or, on tbe other
hand, whether thoy can be won over
to er abandon their old allegiance
and follow you."
"Ot course, mon enfant. I know all
about that: I Intend, first of all, to
get them Inside tbe Citadel. They'll
elmply obey orders and carry on, In
the ordinary course of duty, till the
moment comes for setting the place.
The garrison of this post will march
as escort with me across the Mokai
sen country to Mokassen, and Into
the Citadel. All they will know or
care If they know or care anything
at 'il Is that their Commandant Is
r'a a diplomatic mission to parley
,Wlth tho Kald.
"When the ti me, and my plans, are
ripe tor the seising ot tbe Citadel,
j they will simply obey orders.

"When I am master ot Mekazzen,
and have garrisoned It with the rest
of my command, will be the time to
find out who Is for me, and to make
It clear that he who is not for ma
la against me. Also the exact fate
of him who is against me."
"And the other detachments, mon
Commandant? When will they ar
rive?" "When I send for them. When I
have completely won the confidence
ot tbe Kald, so that he believes that
tbey are marching to Join his ban
ner under my command."
"Why not assemble the whole
column before marching from here,
mon Commandant?" asked Vittorelll,
eager, hopeful, but not yet wholly
convinced.
"Ah, why not. Indeed, mon en
fant t BecauBO the Kald will not
bear of 1'- It I cross the border
with one man more than tbe garri
son ot this post. It Is war. We shall
be surrounded, cut off, ambushed
and annihilated In one ot the de
files. My ilrst proposal was to
march In, bag and baggage, horse,
foot, and guns and that was the
Kald'a answer through the mouth
ot bis own son wbo visited me at
Post Three.
"That young man. Prince Ralsul
(a clever lad, by the way, who
speaks English, French and Span
ish as well as 1 do), made it clear
that we should all be welcome
and the more the msrrler but we
must come In small detachments
and on different days.
"Treacherous swine, these
Arabs," he added. "They trust no
body." "So having marched Into tbe
place, we mark time until the other
detachments arrive," mused Vitto
relll. "H'ml What about treach
ery? We shall have to sleep wltb
our eyes open."
"You are right, my friend. Until
the Kald sleeps with his eyes shut,
dnce and for all. But don't you
see tbe prettlness of my plan? If
the Kald Intends treachery, and
would capture thb whole column
tor Its rifles, ammunition and kit
guns, horses, stores and cash and
such of the men as would Join htm
to escape torture and death he's
got to watt until 1 send for the
other detachments. I shall have In
Mekazzen a force quite big enough
to do our Dislness, and settle his
bash. Though what I hope and in
tend to do Is to seize tbe Citadel
before I send for the other detach
ments, .
"Then I can present an accom
plished fact to the Sergeant-Majors
and Sergeants, and to the N.C.O.'s
of the native troops as well as to
lei Idplonnatro, when I have to
show my hand."
Silence fell between the two men.
"Our rascals bore can think they
are seizing the Castle for France,
of course," observed Vittorelll at
length.
'"They can think what tbey like.
as I said before," replied Rlccoll
sharply. "Tblnk what they like and
do what they're told. Though that
Is where you will be most useful,
mon enant. Sounding them: talk
ing them over showing them what
they have to gain on the one hand
and what to lose on the other
their Uvea: separating the sheep
from the goats: forming a group of
those upon Those personal loyalty
I can absolutely rely."
"H'ml ... I can pretty well do
that now, mon Commandant. Our
good Corslcans, whom you so wise
ly selected, will be trustworthy;
and I can answer for the Italians.
I've no doubt the Germans will be
all right, and more willing to fight
against France than tor her. I can
get the Russians over, I expect;
and, I think, the Spaniards and the
Belgians . . . Whore we shall have
trouble will be with two French
grognards, two silly old fools with
about a hundred years' service be
tween them, and tour Englishmen
stubborn mulish creatures, who
can only entertain one Idea at a
time. Yea, we shall have trouble
with thorn "
"On the contrary, my dear Sor-geant-MaJor,"
rcilted Major 'Napo
leon Rlccoll, as he rose to hts feet.
"It Is they who will have trouble
with us."
Buglesl ...
The stlrrltn notos ot the rousing
cell have such an effect upon the
post, as does the fall ot a great
rock Into the quiet tarn.
To the Idnionnairet It Is the slg

soon adds.
