SI.IIERT ACS TIM, Mr.
REV. A. G. BENNETT
OF LOYAL SPIRIT
Citleen of Jackson county were
called yesterday morning to answer a
challenge to their loyalty as Ameri
can citizens by supporting the offi
cers of local government. Such ft
pies, was made by Rev. Alexander G.
Bennett in his sermon at the regular
services at the First Methodist Epis
copal church.
His sermon, patriotic In "character,
opened with a high tribute to the
majority of Jackson county's citizens
for their temperance In this period of
great stress and turmoil. He then
declared 1 that their tolerance has
been tried to the limit In the expres
sions of the mob spirit, and that the
time has come for persons with a
feeling of loyalty to their county
officials to make a declaration of
that loyalty.
'The mob spirit must not prevsll
In Jackson county," the Rev. Bennett
told his congregation. "We have been
?lerant to the limit to these expres--ns
of the, mob spirit, calling for
rope, and arousing the 111 will brew
ing in various parts of the county."
The revered expression of Abraham
Lincoln "With malice toward none
and charity to all," was frequently
mentioned by Rev. Bennett, who also
commended the characters of Wash
lngton and McKlnley. who also re
mained calm during the greatest
stress. That fine self control has
made America a great nation, he
pointed out, adding that there Is still
hope for the country, when the ma
jority will meet a grave situation
with gentlemanshlp and a Christian
spirit In preference to violence and
anarchist tendencies.

Frame r. Dutton, well known
pioneer and rancher of Sterling has
just returned from eastern Oregon
where he went to visit friends.
'-Everywhere I went," said Mr
Dutton, "as soon as anyone knew
where I waa from they asked me
what In time was the matter down
there. They couldn't understand It.
In Pendleton they said 'why don't
you send those trouble makers and

Why can't you people tend to 'em?'
"They cant understand why the
people of southern Oregon tolerate

There ought to be some way of stop
