There are 278 crackers In the column,

Beck To Build
New Platform
On His Bakery
Michael Beck, owner of Beck'e
Bakery, announced today that In order
to help the unemployment problem
ln the Berrydale district, he will start
work thia week on a loading platform
which will be built on the north aide
of the bakery building.
The plans call for a doorway to be
cut In the concrete wall of the build
ing and the construction of a heavy
concrete floor. The roof will be added
later. Mr. Beck saya there are more
unemployed men living near the plant
than he will be able to employ.
When this work la completed the
drivers will not use the front of the
building for loading and unloading.
t
TO STAY AWAY
A concerted movement urging non
members of the Good Government
Con press not to a t te nd t he mass
meeting of that organization to be
held here tomorrow, was launched
today.
Several prominent citizens, sensing
the serious situation confronting the
community, called on Individuals they
knew who planned to attend the
meeting, and take part ln Its pro
ceedings, to stay away.
The refusal of the Good Govern
ment Congress to allow Attorney E. E.
Kelly to address the meeting, was
taken as clear evidence that the
leaders of the organization will tole
rate no outspoken criticism, or brook
any opposition, to the carrying out
of a program that has already been
prepared.
The statement published tnat At
torney Kelly asked to appear to de
fend Judge Nortotn and District At
torney Codding was incorrect, accord
ing to Mr. Kelly.
I only asked for a hearing." eata
Mr. Kelly today, "and I Intended to
represent no one but myself. I wanted
to speak particularly as a member
of the Bar association and explain
that when Mr. Banks claimed he could
secure no attorney to defend him, he
was in error. It was Mr. Banks who
dismissed his attorneys, not his at
torneys who deserted Banks. I wanted
to read Mr. Banks' letter showing this
to be true.
"But the leader of the congress re
fuses to give me a hearing. I win
let the people draw their own con
clusions as to why. I hRd no Inten
tion of delivering an incendiary speech
or even a critical speech. I merely
wanted to give the other side of the
story, show the members the errors
of their ways, and hoped the members-
of the congress would be fair
enough to give me that chance."
Under such circumstances there
a strong feeling ln this city that the
more mass meetings of the congress
are confined to bona-fide members
of that organization, the better for
all concerned.

'-Hell's Highway" is the title of an
epic of the sorrows and laughter of
road camp convicts, opening today at
the Pox Craterian theater, with
Richard Dix heading an unusually
powerful cast.
As the tough, large-hearted, realis
tic convict, Duke Ellis, Dlx Is said
to strike a tremendously appealing
note.
While the picture is powerfully
dramatic and not a preachment, the
prison conditions it reveals, accord
ing to advance reports, are calculated
to stir humane people to deep con
sideration of prison mismanagement.
