Basketball Goes Strong
With Athletic Boys and
Girls Throughout World
By FORREST C. (I'HOO) AIXEN
(Written for the Associated Press)
LAWRENCE, Kas (AP) Figures show there are twenty million boys
and girls In the world playing basketball today. There's hardly a country
In the world that doesn't go In for the game In a big way.
France, Italy, Japan, China, Persia,
India, Sweden, the Philippine Islands,
Portugal, Caacho-Slovakla, Turkey.
Greece, Mexico, Canada, Poland. Rus
sia, Germany, England and practically
all of the South American countries
encourage national championship
play.
The International Y. M. O. A. secre-
tarlea planted the game early in many
of the foreign countries, while our
U. 8. soldiers gave the game to the
Philippine Islands In 1000. The
American Army of Occupation taught
the German populace basketbsll In
1018.
During the Inter-allied gamea at
Paris In 1010, tha United States, Italy
and France played for the champion
ship, tha United States winning
rather handily.
After the Armlntlce was signed, two
American teams, by Invitation from
the British government, demonstrated
basketball In the British area of the
war sone. The British took to It
readily.
Rejected for Olympics.
Practically every foreign country
haa fashioned basketball rules
after our American game. The rea

son for this Is evident. They look
to us as the mother country In this
sport and have a right to expect guid
ance In formulating rules and In
shaping their Ideals of sportsman
ship. This writer, as chairman of the
Olympic committee of the National
Basketball Coachea' association nego
tiated with International athletlo
leadera toward the project of Includ
ing basketball aa a demonstration
game In the Olympics at Los Angeles
last Auguat. Much enthualasm and
encouragement was received from for
eign and International figures, but
we fallod through lack of support
from our own people.
Instead, the committee selected
footbnl! as a demonstration game,
largely for Its financial lure, rather
than a game that was understood
by our vlaltlng guests.
The football gamo turned out to
be a private financial venture, yet
had the stamp of approval of the
Olymplo committee. Our foreign
gueat neither understood nor cared
for the American extraction of foot
ball. With Its Increasing popularity, no
doubt basketball will be included In
the next Olympic gamea at Berlin In
1038.
A touch of International flavor Is
added at the present time by the
touring of western, mid-western and
southern statea by the "FAL" team
from Mexico City and the Meljl uni
versity team from Tokyo. Japan Both
teams are meeting with much popu
larity and soma degree of success.
Japan Would Have Entered.
Rl Bohaku of Waseda University at
Tokyo wrote me last year that bad
the Olympic committee Included bas
ketbsll In Its sports Japan would have
sent a competing team. Popular sub
scription would have been resorted
to In view of the great success the
Japanese team had last year in the
Par East Olympics against China and
tha Philippines.
It would be a popular move for a
representative American team to dem
onstrate the game, but not to enter
competition, at the next Olympics.
The obvloua reason la that ths Amerl
oana would prove entirely too skillful
for any foreign competition.
