VALLEY APPLES
WILL BUY VOTES
The Oregon legislature has been
benight (Oh, Ho!) And the pur
chasers admit, It the dastardfi.) Now
that they've bought It they" haven't
the price and legislators, unlike spring
hats, can't be charged.' So It's more
pears Representative E. B. Day would
be having, from the 8. O. 8. sent the
chamber of commerce today.
Two telegrams were received In
Medford. One by W. S. Bolger, presi
dent of the chamber of commerce,
the other by Raymond Reter. presi
dent of the Rogue River Traffic as
sociation. ""Serious legislation concerning 7flth
year celebration held up. account of
shortage six Anjou pears for legis
lators. Refer Ted Baker. Rush order
to Earl Day" says first, signed by
Frank Fnrrell and Hamilton Patton
(log rolling In Salem.)
"Medford delegation In a mudge
pot. Earl Day bought off legisla
ture on the promise of a pear a vote
to stage Diamond Anniversary cele
bration" says the other from Mary
Grelner Kelly, wife of Representative
Kelly. .
And the story Is this, the Jackson
county delegation wanted 'to assure
passage of the -bill designating the
Medford celebration the official ob
servance In Oregon of the state's 76th
birthday. Representative Day, In ft
burst of generosity, thinking pears
are plentiful (no one can sell them),
offered a pear a vote. The bill was
more popular than he bad antici
pated and he ran out of pears this
morning. When he found himself In
debt, he sent the call for Anjous to
the chamber of commerce. But the
chamber of commerce can't find the
Anjous, C. T. Baker, secretary, an
nounced this afternoon. So apples
are being sent to Salem to moisten
the tongues of the legislative orators
and Medford Is hoping the substitute
will meet with approval.
The Pinnacle Packing company Is
