A letter was read from Governor
Julius Meier In which the governor
told the committee that some mem
bers had Incorrectly misconstrued his
attitude the provlous night. Wednes
day nigbt It bad been atated by Sena
tor Woodward that the governor
would agree to no plan but the 15 per
cent plan that had emanated from
his office after a conference.
"I waa not advocating, and do not
now advocate, any specific scale," the
governor wrote. "It la the function
of your committee, of course, to de
termine on the scsle of reduction to
be applied, and I have no desire to
Intrude my opinion on you. even In
the way of auggestlon."
The governor stated, ' nevertheless,
that he and the secretary of state
were more favorably Inclined to the
15 per cent plan than any other. Re
mentioned that a number of confer
ences bad been held, and that it was
because members of the committee
considered the Woodward plan, rang
ing from ft to 50 per cent, unworkable
and unjust, that several other plans
were considered.

The fact that it occurred on the

the bill," acquiesced Mr. Lonergan.
The bill passed, and so did the bull.

Oregon may yet be allowed the
sport of kings, with brilliantly clad
Jockeys, mutuel machines and all tbe
trimmings. At least there are two or
three . different groups In the legis

object is to raise revenue for the
etate government. And as a revenue
producer, some say, the Jolly old race
track can't be beat.
One bill permitting the part-

TO DISPLAY NEW
The first of the new Ford V-8 cyl
inder, 113-inch wheel base motor ca-s
wtu be displayed here Saturday in
tbe showrooms of O. K. Gates Auto
company. Ford dealers, at Sixth and
Riverside. It was announced tods?.
The showrooms will be opened at
10 o'clock tomorrow morning. George
Date left today by plane for Port
land, to bring the new Ford to this
city.
Because of the unususpubllc in
terest in the new Ford cars, crowds
are expected to attend. The show
rooms have been decorated for the
occasion. Attendants will be on band
to explain the many important fea
tures of the new ears.
The new V-8 is the largest snd most
powerful Ford ever built. It has new
and distinctively modern lines, a most
attractive front end. longer wheel
base, larger and roomier bodies, fast
er acceleration. Increased power and
speed and Is exceptionally economical
In operation. With Its 78 -horsepower.
V-8 engine, the new Ford Is capable
of a sustained speed of 80 miles an
hour.
The styling of the 14 body typos
expresses the new mode In motor ear
building. The modern note Is found
In the sloping 7ee radiator grill, the
skirted fenders, newly designed head
lamps, cowl lamps and bumpers, the
curve of the hood side ventilators, the
30 -degree slant of the windshield, the
curved roof header, the reverse curve
of the rear quarter and the backwar-i
sweep of tbe apron masking the gaso
line tank.
The new all-steel bodies are ma
terially wider, ' almost a foot longer
and consequently much roomier. The
attractive Instrument panel is direct
ly In front of the driver, with a lar.je
package compartment at the right
side of the Instrument board. Front
seats tn closed cars are fully adjust
able. Interior fittings are luxurious
Options In upholstery and a wide
choice of body colors are available.
The Improved V-8 engine ts fitted
with all-aluminum cylinder heads,
one of the most noteworthy forward
steps In motor design In many years.
Because aluminum dissipates heit
more rapidly, the use of the alumin
um cylinder heads permits higher
compression pressure and results In
Increased speed, power and smooth
ness, faster acceleration and added
fuel economy.
Smooth engine performance results
also from the baslo 8-cyllnder design
and the three-point rubber mount
ing. Cylinder blocks are set at a 90-
degree angle. The crankshaft Is fully
counterbalanced and the orank throws
are at 00 degrees. Opposing pistons ;
and connecting rods are even in
weight. AU of these features com
bine to place all moving parts in nat
ural balance, resulting in exception 1
smoothness of operation The engine
Is fitted with a down-draft carbur
etor, air-in take silencer and a diaphragm-type
fuel pump.
Features of the 113-Inch wheelbse
chassis Include an extremely rigid
double-channel, doume drop X-tyae
frame, torque tube drive, a straddla
mounted rear axle pinion, transverse
cantilever springs. Internal expand
ing mechanical four-wheel brakes. 17
inch welded steel spi.ke wheels and
tires of 5.50 Inch section.
In 'the three-quarte floating rear
axle, the driving pinion is mounted
In a double taper roller thrust bear
ing at the front and a straight radtol
roller bearing at the rear. This main
tains permanent alignment of the
pinion with the ring gear under all
driving conditions and results In ex
tremely quiet axle operation.
Die frame Is cushioned by four
Houdallle double-acting hydraulic
shock absorbers, which are both auto
matically and thermostatically ad
justed for every variation In weather
or road conditions. The shock ab
sorber links are insulated In rubber.
The rear fuel tank baa a capacity, oi
14 gallons.
The transmission ts of the synchro
nised type, with helical constant meih
gears, and functions unusually "squle?
ly both In second speed and during
peed changing. The clutch is of the
double-disc type an is spring cush
ioned for soft engagement.
