DAYTONA BEACH (AP) Five
years of record-smashing are be
hind Sir Malcolm Campbell's
"Bluebird," which has been remod
eled for another assault on time.
It's marks are:
1037 Pendlne Sands -174 mph.
1038 Daytona Beach 308 mph.

1931 Daytona Beach 348 mph.
1933 Daytona Beach 383 mph.
By TED OIIX.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla--(AP) The
lure of speed has called a doughty
Britisher back for greater triumphs
on the roaring road.
He Is Sir Malcolm Campbell of Eng
land, whose name and fame fill a
large niche In the history of automo
bile record achlevents during the past
decade.
Driving a long, trim 3600 horse
power car, the Intrepid veteran comes
here seeking to break his own land
speed record of 383 miles sn hour In
what may be his valedictory to the
racing world.
He Is 48 years old now and, al
though still In his prime, he may de
cide after his forthcoming trials that
hts contribution to the advancement
of speed entitles him to a well-deserved
retirement from a thrilling
career he has followed for nearly a
quarter of a century.
with the record threatened to be
pushed still higher by his own skillful
driving, racing officials believe Camp
bell may figure the mark la beyond
reach for a time at least and with
draw from the racing game to rest on
his laurels.
Competition for the Britisher has
been- meager for the lost few years
and at present there Is no known
driver who hss msde a definite threat
to oust him from his throne. Several
have announced their hopea, but they
have not yet progressed past the
ballyhoo stage.
Same Old "Bluebird."
The car Sir Malcolm will drive In
his forthcoming trials Is the same
"Bluebird" In which he set the pres
ent record a year ago, although It
has been slightly re-deslgned to per
feot streamlining and Is equipped
t a new 3800 horsepowor motor.
During one of his two official runs
here last year, he sttalned the amaz
ing speed of 307 miles an hour. Now,
with 1000 added horsepower tn hts
car, he seeks to boost the record well
beyond Its present msrk.
Modest and reticent, Campbell will
make no predictions as to the speed
he hopes to attain, but officials be
lieve he will ahoot for the 300 mtle-an-hour
mark.
Two years ago he admitted ha want
ed to be the first man to drive an
automobile 300 mllea an hour1 five
miles a minute. That was Just after
he became the first driver to hit a
four mlle-a-mlnute clip with a record
of 348. He said then that If he
could some day do 800 he would be
natlsfled,
; tuck Plays a Part.
"When you are going at near-record
speed," Sir Malcolm has said. "It Is
largely a matter of luck whether you
clip off that fraction of a aecond
that means the difference between
success and failure. All I can do is
push down hard on the accelerator.
steer a straight course and hope for
the best."
The condition of the beach wind
resistance, variable atmosphere that
affecta carburetton and suitable tides
are some of the problems with which
the driver Is faced. In addition to
possible mechsnlcal trouble.
So far, he has mastered them all.

hope to get It.
Brown, Tiger guard who has been
ill with the flu, was recovered enough
to play part of the gams against
Chemawa last Saturday night, and
will be In top ahape by Friday.
Brown's weakness was evident Satur
day, as he wasn't breaking as fast as
usual, but with another week of re
covery he will bo in top form.
Other members of the Tiger squad
are all In good shape, and unless un
foreseen accidents occur, they should
take Grants pass by a sizable score.
