THE DRAMA GOES ON
l"IVHAT, my dear Armltags, do
TT you Imagine you're talking
bout DOW?"
The Jibe came from Mark. Arml
tage took a long look at him and con
firmed bis original opinion tbat
Mark bad never been party to thlj
precious piece ot bis mother's op
portunism. "Just what 1 was goln' to ask
what are you talkln' about?" Mrs.
Lodslv bad gone ratber grey round
the mouth: she was clutchlrg at
a semblance ot composure.
"I'm talking about what Is In a
ense ancient history the sale ot
some shares by Barbara's mother to
a certain purchaser a (ew days be
fore Lionel Quentln's death."
Mrs. Lodely made an unattractive
ound, something between a crow
and a cough.
"What's behind this, Judyr
"Nothln. All nonsense. I'm sure
I don't know."
"It's quite useless to expect my
mother to enlighten u-e, Armltage.
If there's anything you want me to
know, you'd better out with It."
"I Intend to out with everything,
Bat I'd rather leave details to Poole,
who'll be here In a minute. The
outline of what be has to say la
this. A Kings Mallard firm ot whom
we have all heard"
"Quentln, Lodely and CaneT"
"Quentln, Lodely and Cane,
srashed. The details ot tholr crash
don't matter"
"Oh, don't they Indeed I" snorted
Mrs. Lodely with complete and furi
ous Irrelevance. "They mattered to
you, young man, for It the firm
hadn't made good every last penny
they'd lost, you'd never have bad
I farthing of all your father left you I
And they mattered to my poor bus-

"Judy!"
She checked herself, eyeing her
son with tear.
"You'll either keep quiet or I'll
bave you put out. Understand?"
Mark's eyes were blank with anger.
"I'm sure I all rlghtl All right.
Murkl"
"Go on, Armltage."
There were voices at the door and
Poole ushered tn Leila. Armltage
rose, well-pleased by his own man
agement. "Glad you oould come, Lellal Br
We're discussing er won't you sit
down7
She gave him her characteristic
tilt ot the head and walked to the
wheeled couch.
"How's the mentality today, Mark?
Malignant?"
Mark brushed away her band.
"Bit down aomewhere and keep
quiet," he dlreoted. "For the first
lime Armltage Is managing to In
terest me and I wish he would get
on with the yarn. I fool It's going to
be a very personal one, full ot nasty
dlga at everybody except me. I burn
lo hear more."
. She started round and looked
from Armltage to Poole, who, by
onance, was still In front of the door,
"What kind of a tea-party la this,
Kenneth?" she demanded. The
bloom on her golden ekln faded a
Utile.
Poole cast an odd glance at his
mptoyer. Never before had there
been anything but Impersonal loyal
ty In his eyes but now Armltage, re
morseful, read reproach In them. He
blamed himself for putting this lob
en the lad; though how he was to
bave suspected Poole Poole, the
gay invulnerable He swore to him
self and gestured his secretary to
the Are.
"At least I'm allowed to make a
dash for the door," murmured Leila,
She put her fur round her shoulders
again aa though she felt cold, ral
lied, and turned her usual mockery
upon Mrs. Lodely. "I rather believe
yon and I are going to sink or swim
together, Jndy," she confided. "Prob
ably sink."
"Anythln' I've done was because
It seemed right at the time," af
firmed Mrs. Lodely, twisting an al
ready crumpled handkerchief be
There was a slight flurry tn voters'
registration at the county clerk's of
fice Saturday afternoon- In reaporu
to an appeal at tne "Assembly of the
Good Government Congress" that all
unregistered voters register so they
could sign the recall petitions.

tween her fingers. "And, anyway,
what Barbara's affairs have got to
do with you, Farrell, I don't know."
Right," admitted Farrell, "Bar
bara knows nothing about It, as yet."
Anythln' I did"
'Quite so!" said Armltage. "The
point Is that something yon said to
me not so very long ago and some
thing Leila said to me at South-the-
Water made me curious as to the
reason why, after the firm of Quen
tln, Lodely and Cane went under, the
personal fortune of Sir James Cane
should bave Increased. I've looked
Into the matter.
There's no point In our explain
ing how we came by these facts."
Armltage tapped a slip ot paper and
wished Leila had not sat down be
tween Mrs Lodely's chair and
Mark'a couch. She made him feel
more of a showman than ever.
Once one knows the kind of thing
to look for, it's generally easy to
find. There are very few ways, really,
In which a professional man can
suddenly augment bis capital."
"Very tew ways In which he'd
need anyone like Judy to help him,"
added Mark with Infinite malice.
I never helped aim I" exploded
Mrs. Lodely, 'What I did Is nothlni

Armltage began to speak quickly,
hla main desire to get most ot II
said before Mrs. Lodely gave tongu
once more.
'Both Mr. Quentln and Mr. Lodelj
appear to hare thrown every pennj
they could muster Into the resource)
ot the firm. Mrs. Quentln even tried
to sell a parcel of shares wmch sh
had herself bought tor very little
and, one Imagines, as an act ol
charily. These shares represented i
nominal holding of fifty thousand
pounds In a company which la now,
by chance, one of my own. Nominal,"
he repeated as Mrs. Lodely opened
her mouth.
"Actually, In the Urns of the flrm'i
need, Mrs, Quontln could not gel
even fifty pounds to; them. And yel
after the dissolution ot the firm and
only a week before ber busband'i
death, she did find a bu.'er for them
They changed hands for five hun
dred pounds and became the prop
erty of Sir James, then Mr. Cane. I
should say here that they were
shares In a gold-mining venture."
Poole lit a cigarette. The scrape
ot the match drew Mark's head
round upon his pillow.
"Smoke gives me a headache,
Poole."
Poole did not put out hla cigarette.
He appeared not to hear Mark.
"A month later it became known
that a gold-seam had been opened
up In the mine and the shares
Jumped to par. Sir James' profit af
ter he bad sold the shares again, and
Incidentally re-capltallted hla other
Interests, was a not Inconsiderable
one. The question occurred to us,
bad ha been given inside Informa
tion?" Mrs. Lodely thumped the table
and the rase which she had already
knocked over now rolled to the
floor.
"Forty-fire thousand and Ave hnn
dred,pounda," she declared hoarsely.
"Common fraud. It was, It Leila
don't mind my sayln' so. And some
ot It would bare come to ..urkl"
"Why?" asked Mark coldly.
"Because Mrs. Quentln would
have let us hare some ot It! With
all her odd ways, she'd nevor have
left me and Mark to nearly starve
If she'd got fifty thousand pounds
In the bank! That's wbat I've said
from the first. It's Just a matter of
common Justice. I said Mark and
Babs marryln' because what's hers'll
be his.
"And aa soon as ever those two
were married and nicely settled 1
was goln' to see Cane myself and
make him put matters straight."
She glared at Farrell. "Why yon
couldn't have left woll alone, I don't
know. No one asked you to Inter
fere." "How did ya know, exactly, Mrs.
Lodely?" asked Farrell quietly,
"Sylvia Quentln'd told me about
the shares, snd sellln' 'em and all,
after her husband died. And 1 saw
there was a gold boom an1 told her,
and she asked Cane. And he admit
ted It, and said he'd taken a chance,
and It'd come off. But 1 remembered
him stlckln' a telegram In bis pocket
In a hurry one day he'd come to
call on poor Lionel Quentln, an' I
thought 'I bet that wire gave him the
tip.'"
"Ton didn't teTt anybody, I take
It," said Farrell.
