Parish Hall Party
A lovely affair, bringing promise of
springtime, was held at Pariah hall
Friday evening in compliment to the
student body of St. Marys academy.
Dancing was enjoyed for several hours

50 students and guests present,

Mra. L. E. Williams gave a prac
tical talk on the feeding of birds
in winter. Incidentally Mrs. Wll
llsms explained the process of de
veloping "depression plants," two of
which were exhibited at the meet
ing. The beautiful coral-like growths
on pieces of cool or kllnkers were
developed by the use of a solution
of six tablespoons eaoh of clear
water, tsble salt, household bluing
and one tablespoon of ammonia.

Parent-Teacher unite are preparing
special programs for the February
meetings in honor of the thirty-sixth
onnlvoreary of the founding of the
society and the week of February 18
to 30 has been proclaimed Child
Welfare week In Oregon by Gover
nor Meier. February as to March 8
will be observed as National Educa
tion Week and of special Interest to
workers In the Faclflo coaat states
la the national, convention, - which
will be held In Seattle May 31 to
37 Inclusive. Many unit are pre
paring to send representatives and
Medford and Jackson county are ex
pecting to be represented by full
delegation.
The twenty-eight affiliated unit
in the county aro sending a dele
gation to Jacksonville to attend the
couaty council. Important matters
will be discussed which Include leg
islation of vital Importance to every
parent and also the subject of ways
sua means or raining funds to send
representatives to Seattle In May will
be discussed. Jacksonville , unit Is

Festive Event
At Local Church
The large dining room of the First
Method lit Episcopal, church was
imtA to capacity Friday evening,
when the annual "States" . banquet
was held. Flags and festoons rep
resenting each state In the union and
the United States created a very
colorful sotting for the affair. On
each table flowers and novelties ap
propriate to each state appeared and
candles In lovely sticks and candel
abra lighted the dining room.
The program opened with a bless
ing by Reverend Belknap. Oeor?e
Codding presided as .toastmaater and
community singing was led by C. A
Meeker. The first toast of the even
ing, dedicated to all states In the
union, was given by A. W. Pipes.
Dr. W. J. Howell of the First Pres
byterian church, seated at the Inter
national table, was then called upon
and ended a very appropriate toa&t
with the words: "You people were
born here; we came iere by choice."
The Southern Oregon Normal
School quartet, wbloh an attack of
Influenza had converted Into a trio,
then entertained ' with a group of
songs. . Singing were: Robert .Nel
son, Durwood Oass and George Ben
nett, A. L. Bowmer, professor In Eng
lish at the Southern Oregon Normal
school, .read a scene from Drink
water's play on the Ufa of Abraham
Lincoln, which won very enthusiastic
applause from the audience.
President Walter Bedford of the
normal school the main speaker of
the evening, - ohoae aa his subject.
"Youth." He assured the audience
that the youth of America Is just
as, kind, Just as courteous and Just
as serious minded now as In any
day, and that students are making
great sacrifices to acquire knowl
edge. Almost 1000 youths nave passed
through the Southern Oregon Nor
mal school since 1038, he stated, and
these boys and glrlls. he declared, are
going to be leaders of tomorrow.

which were very well received. Ha

There were five tables of bridge
and 600 In play Thursday evening
at the party of the Degree of Honor j
and a very pleasant evening .was re-
ported by all present. High score in
500 was held by Mrs. Anderson, high j
in bridge by Mrs. Earl Gaddls and
low In 600 by Grace Thompson.

The Woman's Missionary Society of
the Christian church held regular
monthly meeting In the parlors of
the church Wednesday afternoon.
The president, Mrs. Alan Curry, pre
sided at the business, session.
The worship period was led by Mra.
Winnie Creep and Mrs. R. E. Peyton,
reading from Mtcah 4:3-8, as fitting
the' theme, "Teach Me the Way."

sang "Sowing the Wind." very ap
propriate for the subject of worship.

nounced the subject for afternoon
study as "Seedtime In China, -Ministry,

short and Introductory talk, she satd
school days and school teachers are
revealing the way our schools should
build Christian character and the
way the Chinese leaders lead, after
becoming a Christian. She told of
a little child In one of bur schools
who made his home Christian. '

splendid program was presented in

fore All Landing In East or West"
and "Billy Boy."
Plans wore made for the Lincoln
tea to be held February 10th to
which the public Is nvlted, and for
the circus to be held March 17.

by the school council the third Tues

The council will meet in Jackson
vllle February 11th with Mrs. Mor

to Perfect Plans
For Scout Dinner
A committee of Scout mothers met
Wednesday to plan the dinner for
the annual father and son banquet.
Two different menus were discussed
and It was finally decided that the
troops might bring the food which
would be easiest for them to pre
pare. Ths mothers' committee asks
that each father and son bring his
own ,cup and silverware, paper plates
will be furnished.
The Junior high school gymnas
ium where the banquot will be held
next Tuesday evening at 6:30 p. m.,
la larger than any balls previously
used. There will be no crowding of

for Thursday evening of this week
when degree work will be put on
here by the two lodges. Grant Pass
will give the' first degree and Med
ford the second. The local lodge
plans to Initiate about four candi
dates and Grants Pass two.

Thursday evening, February 9, the
Senior Triangle of the First Christ
ian churoh will present a three-act
comedy entitled'', "The Elopement of
Elden," by Marie J. Warren.
The entertainment la open to the
public. No admission will be charg
ed but a stiver offering will be
taken. Much time and effort has
been devoted to making the play a
success and It Is hoped a large
crowd will attend.

A charming affair of the past week
was the meeting of the Thursday
Contract club at the home of Mrs.
Ralph Cowgill. In addtllon to the
regular round of cards, the membera
celebrated with Mrs. W. A. Gates tha
anniversary of her birth. Tables
were decorated in the Valentine
motif witti carnations for center
pieces. The afternoon opened with,
dessert luncheon and prize for high,
score at bridge was awarded Mrs.
Dolph Phlpps. Mrs. Gates was pre
sented with a prise as the honor
guest.
