WASINGTON, Feb. 8. (AP) While
a senate committee was hearing
charges by Senator Lewis (D-, 111.),
that the reconstruction corporation
had discriminated against the weak
In admlnlsterlnz relief funds, the or
ganization today approved 24,0pt,000
of loans.
Charles A Miller, president of the
corporation, shortly before the appear
ance of Lewis, had approved a meas
ure that would put another $150,000,
000 In the hands of the organization
for relief loans to states.
Five for Belief.
Five of today's loans were for self-
liquidating projects and three for re
lief work In Indiana, Tennessee and
West Virginia.
One self-liquidating loan was $33,
800,000 for the construction of
power line from Hoover dam to Los
Angeles.
Senator Lewis, speaking after seve
ral others had approved the bill, said
the government seemed blind to the
danger of revolution and that certain
members of the corporations Doara
had tried to obstruct relief to "those
of hum'ole society" and allowed pre
cedence to "those formerly of power.
A vivid story of cold and hungry
children almost under the commit
tee's nose In the national capital was
given the banking subcommittee by
Mrs. Eleanor Patterson, wealthy editor
of a Washington newspaper.
Conditions Probed.
She appealed for reconstruction
corporation funds for the capital.
Mrs. Patterson said she did not be
lieve the reports of distress until she
accompanied relief workers on a per
sonal Investigation.
She quoted stories of distress
among school children, but said they
wanted their names witnneia Decause
they were afraid of incurring the dis
pleasure of Frank W. Ballou, superin
tendent of schools, who she said in
sisted there were no hungry children.
"We offered to start a fund with
8000 to feed the children, but he
turned us down," she said. "He didn't
want to bother."

Leftover Chicken Recipe.
The Dinner Menu.
Spanish Chicken Buttered Spinach
Bran Muffins Butter
Head Lettuce French Dressing
Crumb Pudding Orange Sauce
Coffee
Spanish Chicken, Serving Four.
4 tablespoons fat
3 tablespoons chopped onions
a tablespoons- chopped green pep
pers a tablespoons chopped celery
1 teaspoon salt
l teaspoon paprika
1 cups diced chicken (cooked)
a cups tomatoes
1 cup boiled rice.
Heat fat In frying pan. When hot,
add and brown onions, peppers and
celery. Add rest of Ingredients. Cover
and cook slowly 10 minutes. Stir fre
quently. Remove lid and boll gently
10 minutes.
Bran Muffins.
(Serve warm or cold)
1 cup bran
1 cups flour
cup sugar
3 teaspoons tasking powder
l teaspoon soda
teaspoon salt
1-3 cup molasses

1 cup milk
8 tablespoons fat, melted.
Mix Ingredients and beat 3 minutes.
Half fill greased muffin pans and
bake IS minutes In moderate oven.
Crumb Pudding.
1 cup crumbs
2 eggs
1 cup milk
t& cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla ,
teaspoon salt
l& cup flour I
16 cup chopped dates
teaspoon cinnamon
14 teaspoon nutmeg
3 teaspoons baking powder.
Mix Ingredients. Pour Into buttered
baking dish and bake 30 minutes in
moderately slow oven. Serve warm
or cold.
Orange Sauce.
l cup sugar
' 3 tablespoons flour
teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons lemon Juice
H cup orange Juice
16 cup water.
Blend sugar, flour and salt. Add
fruit Juices and water. Boll gently
for 3 minutes. Serve warm.
MEAT PATTIES FOB DINNER.
Breakfast.

Meat Patties Browned Potatoes

Bread Butter
Cabbage Salad
Haploca Pudding Cream

Ham Shortcake. Serving 4
1 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1-8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons fat
i4 cup milk.
Mix flour, baking powder and salt.
Cut In fat. Mixing with knife, slowly
add milk, when soft dough forms,
divide It Into 4 pieces and flatten
each piece until 3-3 Inch thick. Bake
10 minutes In moderate oven. Add
ham filling.
Ham Filling.
3 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
3 cups milk
14 cup chopped ham
1 egg, beaten
y4 teaspoon pepper.
Melt butter. Add flour. Mix well
and add milk and cook until creamy
sauce forms. Add remaining ingre
dients and cook 1 minute.
Meat Patties.
1 pound round of beef, chopped
cup crumbs
teaspoon salt
y4 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon chopped onions
8 tablespoons catsup
1 egg
Mix' Ingredients and shape Into
cakes, 3 Inches wide and fa Inch
thick. Boll until well browned. It
will require about 10 minutes to
cook cakes.

Mushroom Soup, Serving Four ,
116 cups mushrooms, diced
3 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon chopped onion
1 tablespoon chopped celery
tablespoon chopped pimlentos
l teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons flour
3!4 cups milk..
If fresh mushrooms are used, chop
them very fine. If canned ones are
used, cut in very slin allves or dice.
Heat butter in frying pan, add and
brown onion and celery. Add mush
rooms and pimlentos. Cook slowly
4 minutes. Add salt and flour. Blend
well and add milk and cook until
creamy soup forms. Stir frequently;
Serve In cups or bowls.
Cheesed Wafers.
13 salted wafers
3 tablespoons butter
1-3 cup grated cheese
Paprika.
Mix butter and cheese. Spread on
wafers. Arrange on flat pan ana
brown In moderate oven. Sprinkle
with paprika and serve. These wafers
are best served warm, but they may
be browned prior to serving and
merely reheated when serving time

being sought today for a black-haired
baby girl left early Tuesday morning
on a SUverton doorstep, within one
block of a hospital.
The county probation officer Is

The baby, whose age was estimated
at not more than three days, was

ENJOY FINE PROGRAM
A program of harmony, both In
muslo and good will, was presented
last Friday evening at the Jackson
ville Orange by the Medford Cham
ber of Commere Gleemen.
The splendid musical numbers pre
sented by the Gleemen were appre
ciated by the Grange patrons as well
as the talks by Wm. S. Bolger, BUI
Oates and O. L. McDonald. After
the program refreshment were serv
ed followed by a social hour of danc
ing. C, O. Hoover, who had charge of
the program, presented a short pro
logue which Included data on early
pioneer musical history and musi
cians of Jackson county. Expressing
his belief that music can play an
Important part In relllevtng the
present depression, he Introduced the
following speakers to tell which was
the more valuable to them person
ally: Algebra or music, Chester
Wendt, Mabel 81ms, Catherine Wendt,
Can Nledermeyer and George Wendt,
With two exceptions, the speakers
spoke In favor of music. As one
speaker aptly remarked that "playing
in the band is about the only chance

The Home Economics club met at
Mrs. Hartley's Wednesday afternoon
with 15 present. The meeting was
opened with the singing of several
pep songs, followed by rollcall ana
response. Plans were made for a
Washington day luncheon to be held
at Mrs. Anna Wednt's. Mrs. Zola
Pick and Mabel 81ms were named as
the entertainment committee. The
next meeting will be held at Mrs.
Edith Gifford's on Thursday, Febru
ary 9. instead of Wednesday, the
8th. Miss Claire Hanley will have
charge of the entertainment.

SAORAMBNTO, Cal., Feb. 8. JP)
The Redwood blghwaj was closed
yesterday from the Oregon border to
13 miles south of Crescent City by
an earth slide south of Crescent
City. The road was opened this
morning, the state division of high
ways here reported.
The slide occurred where the road
skirts the Pacific ocean, and two
steam shovels were brought Into
action.
Heavy rains were held responsible
for loosening the earth.
