IN FARM RELIEF
NOW UNDER WAY,
Improved Farm Credit and
Mortgage Conditions With
Higher Commodity Prices
Are Among Objectives
By F. O. Toshurgh.
(Associated Press 8taff Writer.) -WASHINGTON,
Feb. 1 (AP)-.
Whatever the fate of farm relief
measures in this crowded short ses
elon of congress, a breed program
aimed st improving farm credit and
mortgage conditions as well a rais
ing commodity prices la now on the
move on Capitol Hill.
Emcrgencg measures to provide re.
lief for farmers faced with spring
mortageg payment and no means of
meeting them were studied seriously
by a senate banking subcommittee
wihlch plsnned to hear teatlmony
from various farm organization and
also the treasury department.
Continue llenrlnes.
Beforet he senate agricultural com
mlttee, hearings continued on the
demestio allotment bill passed by the
nouse and designed to raise the
prices of seven selected farm pro
duct by taxing the miller, packer or
otner processor to pay a bounty to
the farmer.
Witnesses on the allotment plan
today Included representatives of the
soap and paint Industries and cocoa
manufacturers. They planned to pro
test a provision Impsolng a duty of
five cent per pound on Imported an
imal, marine and vegetable oil and
fat.
The hearings are to close Satur
day. The bill already ha run a
gauntlet of criticism In which the
principal opposition came from the
meat packers and flour millers.
See Prloe Increase.
The general argument against M
ha been that it would increase the
price of bread, pork product, cot
ton goods, butter and other commod
ities to such an extent that the pub
llo would turn to substitutes, thus
making the plight of the producer
of these artlclea worse than ever.
Proponent contended the tax on
the processors would simply be a res
toration to Wi farmer of the pur
chasing power he lost In the years of
low prices. They held that produc
tion control feature of the bill
would make It In line with the law of
supply and demand and contended
the shift to substitute would not
be u great aa opponent predicted.
