PATSY DOES A DANCE
tX THE Upper Mallard vicarage
tha lamp was lit, bat It was
placed la a curious position or
a lamp. It wu on tht floor.' It
Illumined mainly tha feet and the
lone lega of Miss Patsy Raoul at
ba danced, singing in bar queer,
busier rolca a long of tha vlne
Tarda and the sun. Tha vicar, In
a choir at tha other end of the
loom, applauded delightedly.
"Splendid I Spendldl Ton know, I
have the pleasant feeling that I
couldn't possibly approve of that
long It my French were less rusty;
but fortunately I only understand
ena sentence In Ave. What a swing
ing, stamping tunel You're giving
one old man a lot of pleasure, Miss
Raoul.'
"Why nott"
"1 don't know why not," admitted
the vicar, sucking contentedly at
bis pipe, "but one la supposed to
say that kind of thing. Personally,
rva always Imagined that when a
creative artist feels the wish for an
audience, It's Immaterial whether
ft consists of one old man or a
hundred young ones."
Patsy Raoul picked np tha lamp
and brought It over to tha table
by tha lira.
"Man make ma the mora good
audience as women," she remarked,
ourllng herself into a chair like a
make. "I like not any women
aver. Only Barbara."
Sha grinned and forgot to sound
foreign. "Th first time I met her,
she fainted dead away. In the Park.
I told her afterwards my face bad
Bade people scream now and then,
but it had never actually knocked
anyone senseless before."
"I'm glad you Ilka Barbara. She
needs a frlnd."
"She's only to lift a linger and
ba can have tba best friendship
In the world. Tarrell Armltage "
"And I'm glad you Ilka Farrall
Armltage."
Miss Raoul looked defiant
"What do you meant He doesn't
Ilka me. I got wrong with him at
the start tried to sting him for a,
couple of dogs. Only vanity, yon
know; I could easily have afforded
two tykes, even without my leg
acy." "You're enjoying your legacy?"
"What do you think? It's ex
tremely pleasant, being rloh."
"It Is, Indeed," agreed Mr. Irere.
Tm vary rich myeelf."
Miss Raoul stared round the
meagre room with her small, black
ayes; eventually they returned to
her host'a composed face, fine as
a cameo In the firelight. Her
throat ached suddenly,
Ob, to be free, like this old man,
of the pull and urge of life! To
have a calm mind, to know the
heights and depths only through
tha hearts of others, to dip so small
cup at the fountain of human
love that always it is fall to the
brim! She said restlessly,
"A poor old friend died and left
ne his her whole bag of tricks.
I mayn't touch the capital I must

son on the income. And so long
tm It's my reason that's to be our
ktandard of measurement, well, I'm
lot complaining."
She hooked one leg over the arm
t her cbalr and lit a cigarette.
Her green and crimson woollen
kuit made bar look Ilka soma
mediaeval jester.
"You meet come and see my
how In Town," she added irrele
vantly. "Come and etay with me
When Barbara has' re-done my
bouse. I wish you would."
"It Is very gracious of you to
ask me. But I might offend Far

ity when I need a little change."
.Be smiled at her. "We shall both
come and sea you ao." After a
pause, he added gently "Yon have
your art, yon know. You must not

"Mayn't I?"

practical common sense, "yon

it rather late for Barbara to be
roaming the country-side by her
self?" Miss Raoul cocked her bead at
tentively and presently rose to look
between the ourtalns. She stood
swearing softly to herself, as she
always did when she was intent
on anything.
"There's a oar," aha said pres
ently. "I think It's Farrell Arm
luge's. What d'yoa bet he has
been roaming the country-side with
her?'"
The vicar sighed a little. Mies
Raoul came back from the window.
She asked
"You don't think shall aver stop
oaring for Little-Cad-Mark?"
"I don't think so. No. Love
roots deep, with her."
"Good job Leila paid me only to
vamp blm, then, not marry him!"
And, as the vicar looked lost
"But that's how I first came Into
It I thought you knew! Sha of
fered me a hundred to work up an
affair with Mark help blm to get
thoroughly bored with Barbara, you
know"
"With Barbara, your friendt"
"I hadn't met her then. Leila al
ways spoke of Mark's girl and the
decorator-girl as two separate peo
ple. Tact, I s'pose. Or salesman
ship! She's got an eye for a bar
gain-basement, has Leila."
"Leila, your hostess?"
"She even wanted 10 pay me by
results, like a matrimonial agency I
But, of course, I made It fees in
advance and my word of honor
that I'd earn 'em."
'Your word of honor," echoed
Mr. Frere. "Yes, I see."
'What d'you meant I kept It,
didn't It I handled Mark all
right; the da Capo that's a restau
rant where bis lot mostly goes
was simply cackling about us be
fore be faded off to heaven knows
where! Look here, tell you what
I'll do"
She dropped back Into her chair
in a sudden lassitude.
I'll return Leila her money. I
can see you think It was shoddy
of ms to take It. Oh, but I will!
I'd like to please you. And I'd
like Farrell Armltage to get what
he wants, too. I'd rather help
him for nothing, now I come to
think of It." She met the vicar's
smile. "You'd feel the same," she
challenged. "Can't we work to
gether, somehow, and fix things for
him?"
I'm afraid not" The gentle
finality was like a knelL "You and
I, my dear, must share this tear
of seeing one we love left empty
handed by life. Wa shall both need
fortitude."
"Fortitude be 1 I'll wring Bar
bara's l-eckl"
The vicar was chuckling over
this remedy when the door opened
and Farrell Armltage came In.
"Alio, 'allol" Miss Raoul wel
comed blm. "Yon not do know I
am bare and yon shook dead, no?"
"Ha d bava ahookad deader It he
had oome In time to hear your
song," said Mr. Frere. Ha looked
affectionately np into Armltage's
face. "Wei', Farrell?"
"Everything's all right sir, hon
estly."
I'm very glad to know It my
dear boy."
"What have you done with Bar
bara?" shrilled Miss Raoul,
"She got her toet wet on the
sands, so she's changing."
'She goes up to London tomor
row," said the vicar tranquilly.
"with Leila and Miss Raoul. Or
that waa the plan. But If you are
returning yourself, perhaps you
will take her by road: and see that
shs gets oomfortably to her hotel.
I am a little anxious both Miss
Raoul and I are a little anxlons
about her."
The door opened behind her and
Armltage turned eagerly, but it
was Leila Cane who entered and
came up to tha fire. The vicar
greeted her; there was an Instant's
pause and then the vicar spoke
again:
"What," asked the vicar, stirring
faintly In his chair, "what of Mark,
lately? Is he still In your house,
Farrell, or not?"
Armltage told them what there
was to tell of Mark.
"Mark Mark cured? Mark well?
Oh Oodl Mark wall?"
It was a ragged cry, horribly
startling, torn from Leila who had
been so smooth, so sura.
She dropped stick and gloves In
a final devastating clatter as she
got to her feet; and then they
heard her make her tumbling way
out of the room and out of the
house.
