Adlcities of
Legion Auxiliary
By Mrs. Cole Holmes . .
The American Legion Auxiliary met
last Monday evening In the club
rooms st the armory. ' The meeting
waa opened by Mrs. Row, our presi
dent. The colore were advanced and
the Pledge to the Fleg and our na
tional anthem given. After the pre
amble of the Auxiliary's constitution
waa read Mre.-Hanby gave a very In
teresting and enlightening talk on
national defense. National defense
means national peace. There are two
logical reasons why I make this state
ment. Our army and navy are really
national police. If we have adequate
polio proteotlon we need have no
fear that foreign enemlee will steal
up upon us and It they do threaten
our country our proteotlon Is guar
anteed. If enemlea know we have
a strong army and navy they will
hesitate to start trouble. We have no
doubt that our country could pro
duce as army and navy In a short
time as It did In 1017, but why
should we throw good money sway
by destroying warships, destroyers
and airplanes now, when we never
know bow seen we may need them?
Did you know that the Washington
treaty Jn 1831 provided (or a partial
disarmament of our navy and the
navies of all countries represented at
that meeting? Dd you know that
WE were the only country that com
piled with that agreement? Another
point that Mrs.' Hanby brought out
made us wonder It tills wee not the
reason that some European countries
were unable to meet their war debt
Since 1991, the countries ot Europe
have been steadily increasing their
navies, aeroplane squadrons snd arm
tes until now every country In Eu
rope bas an army of over one million
men. The United States has only
437,400 men In our regular forces
at the present time. Do YOU think
that le enough protection for a coun
try tnat has eueh an unprotected
boundary line?
Mr. Bolger gave a very Interesting
talk on the National Economy league.
It seems that this league was or
ganized to reduce taxes but It has
dlreoted its criticism to the ex-service
men's Insurance and hospitaliza
tion. The insurance was paid by the
men themselves and Is a Mlt-flnanc-
lng project as every other Insurance
project la and that the oost of tax
ing care of the disabled men comes
from the Income tax branch of the
government, ao thla reduction would
not affect- OUR taxes at all.
Mr. Williamson, who la In charge
of the ticket sale for the Legion
play, gave a short talk on the play
co os sponsorea oy tne Legion and
waa assured of the Auxiliary s co-operation.
During the course of the meeting
It was voted to send our regular
monthly donation to the vetwrana'
hospital in Portland. Mra. Mitchell,
one of our past presidents, sent In
two quilts to be used by us In our
welfare work. They were gratefully
received as tnere have been so many
demanda for clothes this yeahn
demands tor clothes and bedding
mis year that the sewing club haa
been unable to meet with all the de
mands. On February 97 at 9 p. m. the
Auxiliary will aponaor a benefit card
party In the women'a club rooms In
the city hall. The proceeds from
this psrty will help In the Auxil
iary's welfare work. Every one Is
aaked to .help In this project. Botb
auction and contract bridge will be
played. A small fee will be asked
and there will be refreahmente at
the close of the afternoon. The
committee In charge of arrange
ments Includes Meedsmes Holloway,
Olmscheld and Aiken. The commit
tee In charge of refreshments, Mes
damee Wright, Satterly and Fry. The
committee In charge of play, Mes.
dames Baker and Brayton. Please
phone for reservations Mrs. Brayton
401 or Mra. Baker 1533.
The poppy poster contest was dis
cussed end the Auxiliary decided to
conduct It again this year. The meet
ing dosed with songs by the glee
club.
The sewing dub will meet next
Monday evening at 7:30 In the wel
tar room of the Medford National
bank building. All who can possibly
come will be welcome, as there Is a
great deal of work to be done thla
year for those who need wsrm cloth
ing and bedding.
