given by the school children and was

been 111 for some time, but is better
at this writing, altho confined to his
bed.

auto accldont near Phoenix in which
Mrs. Ertckson, one of the school
teachers at Reese Creek, was a par
ticipant. No complete details were
given however, but was reported she
was not seriously hurt.

Forest rangers reported today that
Mra. R. A. Taylor was frown to death
in the severe snowstorm yesterday.
While she was returning home to the
Fuller ranger station at Manton, 13
mllea from here. She was accom
panied by her brother-in-law, but
becsme exhausted and could not con
tinue.
He built a fire and continued on
to the station for help, but on return
tnff found her dead.
There was 60 inches of snow on the
ground here.

T. Murphy, farmer, and asked for
help n extricating their truck from
mud In front of his house. Murphy
aided.
Later, when the youths were ar
rested In Portland, Murhpy was In
formed they borrowed the truck to
haul away the chickens they had
stolen from Murphy's coop, and the
chickens were aboard when he gave
them the boost.

TRIES SUICIDE
DENVER, CoIo Jan. 36. Glenn
Smeeman, C lee viand business man
and Colorado convict, was back In his
cell at the Canon City prWm today
awaiting action on his pardon plea.
w(Miie his wife was recovering here
from an attempt at suicide.
Mrs. Smeeman talked readily of her
attempt to kill herself by a sleeping
potion and gas in the home of a rel
ative last Thursday. The attempt
was not disclosed until yesterday.
"On minute I was building vp
hope, the next t was frightened,"
she said. "It's been like that for
days. And days have been to long,
always worrying, wondering If every
thing will be all right.
"Finally I said, 'What's the use?' n
Regardless of what action Is taken
on Smeeman's plea for pardon, she
will remain close to him, Mrs. Smee
man said.
Smeeman, convicted of auto theft
here In 1017, escaped and became a
succceaafui business man in Cleve
land before the law finally found him
out. He faces a similar charge of
auto theft in St. Louis, Mo. He has
applied to Governor Edwin C. John
son for a pardon and the governor
has taken the request under advise
ment. Yesterday the state board of
corrections and Prison Warden Roy
Best recommended to the governor
that executive clemency be granted.
