and Phoenix will mix thlnga tonight
on the Phoenix floor In what may
turn out to be tho championship

for this year, being the only two un

ference. Central Point haa deefated Jack
sonville and Gold Hill, while Phoe
nix has dofented Gold Hill and Tal

many games to be played, and ln

Is the general belief that tonight's
game may be Vie turning point in
the championship hopes of the teams.
Besides the Phoonlx-Contral Point
game tonight, Gold Hill will play

school defeated their fellow profes
sors from Southern Oregon Normal,
48 to 84. In the first of a serlea of
basketball games botween the two
schools here laat night.
The victory came as a surprise to
a lot of fans, for the 6ona had pre
viously defeated Oregon university
three gamea out of four.
Benjamin was high for the Mon
mouth team, with a total of 16
points, and Ynndle led the Sons, with
nine. The teams will meet tonight
at Independence.

Bozeman, Jr., of Vallejo, Cel., red
headed and the youngest player in
the tournament, will have an oppor
tunity tonight to grab sole posses
sion of the lead In the battle for the
world three-cushion billiards championship.
Bozeman will meot Allen Hall- of
Chicago, who waa defeated In hla only
start. At the rate Bozeman haa been
going, he was favored to break the
three-way tie for the lead, In which
Clarence Jackson of Detroit and Wel
ker Cochran, the balkllne wlxard from
Hollywood, CM., had a ahare with two
victories and no defeats.

ficials' association and principals of
the Portland tnterscholastlc league

ceive for a high school basketball
game, officials for Portland high
school games are going to be re
cruited from the teachers within the
high schools, It developed here today.
The principals offered 14 a game.
The officials said they would reduce
their fees from 97.00 to as a game,
but refused to come down the added
dollar.

Ruth, asked to accept $00,000 for 1933
Instead of the $70,000 he was paid
last season, said yesterday he was
prepared to accept a cut of 10 or, at
the most, 16 per cent.
The guess of the baseball corres
pondents was that the Babe and Col
Jacob Ruppert eventually would split
the difference between $70,000 and
$60,000 on a contract calling for a
salary of $62,800 for 1033.
Lou Gehrig, who was paid $27JJ00
for doing his chorea at first base
for the Yankees last year, also has
balked at the size of the cut the
Yankeea have asked him to accept,
but expects to settle his differences
with the club this week.
Vernon Oomez, one of the two
members of the champions' lineup
who were granted Increases, also Is
prepared to argue that his work last
season entitled him to a bigger boost.
The New York Giants have had lit
tle trouble signing their players, so
far, but It was understood that Pted

postponed until next Tuesday, Janu
ary 24.

Heartley (Hunk) Anderson has sign
ed another one-year contract to pre
pare the fighting Irish of Notre Dame
for their football warfare, quieting
reports that there would be a change
at South Bend, next fall.
Anderson, who suoceeded the late
Knute Rockne, after the latter'a
tragic death in 1031, signed up after
a conference yesterday with the Rev.
Charles L. O'Donnell, president of the
university, but no action waa taken
on the atattu of Athletic Director
Jeses Harper, whose contract does not
expire until next May.
Last year's staff of assistants, John
(Ike) Voedtsch, Tommy Yaxr, Nordy
Hoffman and Marchmont Schwartz,
also will have to wait until later for
action on contracts.
