BUTTER UP CENT
E ACTS
PORTLAND, Jan. 30. (AP) The
inference of country butter buyers
that their regular sellers In the city
were holding back auppllee from
them In the hope of forcing a, higher
price, was given eome standing when
a special session of the Portland Pro
duce Exchange was called to put the
price up 1c lb.
Regular buyers In the country were
not pleased regarding their alleged
treatment by Portland houses and
complaints were general.
Action of the exchange In calling a
special session and advancing the
price was not unexpected In fact was
practically forecast. Everyone In the
trade was talking of various Interests
holding supplies off the market with
the expectation of getting the ad
vance. The price of butterfat made a sim
ilar advance.
Price on eggs was still being shaded
in the local territory with outsiders
and private firms the chief quote rs
of prices below those established by
the local co-ops.
Much strength was continued In
the market for live chickens. Prices
show no change here for the last few
days: practically all offerings being
listed at the top for the various
classifications.
Weather conditions have created a
smaller supply of dressed turkeys In
the local market but trade conditions
are no better. There is plenty in sight
for needs of the trade. Prices un
changed.

Snow Melts Fast
Damage, if any, to crops was ex
pected to be negligible as the snow
In the agricultural areas melted soon
after hitting the ground. The snow
fall at San Bernardino and Riverside
was reported the heaviest In 15 years.
Seventy automobiles were stalled
on the transcontinental highway by
a two-foot fall of snow In Cajon Pass
on the San Bernardino-Needles high
way. The highway later was blocked
by a terrific landslide which extended
for half a mile and which Imprisoned
an automobile in which two un
identified women were occupants.
The women were reported uninjured,
but unable to leave the scene.
The landslide will block the high
way for probably two days, state road
officials said. Most of the automo- 1
biles were making their way back to
Vlctorvllle e snow plows opened the
road from that end.
Fifteen Families Homeless
The storm added another chapter to
the freakish weather experienced by
this section in recent weeks. It left
fifteen families homeless, driven from
their residences by overflow waters of
ordinarily dry washes, In the Canoga
Park district.
High winds accompanied the heavy
rains yesterday and last night, reach
ing a velocity of nearly 60 miles an
hour at San Pedro and forcing three
ships of the United States fleet two
dread naughts and a destroyer, resting
in the roadstead to take to the open
sea under forced draught when they
threatened to drag anchors. Other
ships of the fleet kept up steam for
emergencies.
Long Beach Flooded
Low areas throughout the city of
Long Beach were flooded, as the run
off waters swept toward the ocean
from the mountains. Fifteen Mexican
families tn the Canoga Park district
were homeless by the overflowing
of washes. Some were rescued by po
lice from the roofs of their homes
when they were surprised by the sud
den rush of water.
The coast guard was called Into
service late last night to rescue four
persons from a drifting barge off
Long Beach. Earlier yesterday a coast
cutter saved the life of Ernest H.
Wylle of San Pedro whose 14-foot
boat was wrecked at Point Flrmln.
