Statesmen Study Ticklish
Situation With Anxiety
Italian Demonstrators
Chant 'Dalmatia Is Ours'
By AN DURE BERDINO
ROME, yp) Dalmatla, a itrip of
territory on the eastern shore of the
Adriatic, has again embittered Jugo
slavia and Italy, and led to a situa
tion that statesmen are studying with
anxiety.
There have been demonstrations
throughout Italy In which the phrase
"Dalmatla is ourst" was shouted, and
a sharp speech by Mussolini In the
chamber of deputies.
Old Bone Of Contention
They followed Incidents In Dalma
tla, such as the killing of a fascist
and the destruction of old atone Hons
that signified ancient Italian domina
tion there.
The difficulties over Dalmatla had
an airing at the time of the post
war treaties. In ten years since the
disputes have blazed on several oc-caslons.
Dalmatla, extending south from
Plume to Albania, Is Important to
Jugoslavia because it furnishes that
young kingdom with many ports.
It Is Important to Italy because
this country remembers the strategic
advantage of the Dalmatian coast
when Austria, controlled It In the
world war. Italy would not want a
big section of her fleet engaged in
patrolling the Adriatic If she were
simultaneously lnvoWed with another
Mediterranean power.
Bears Venetian Marks
The Italian claim to Dalmatla Is
based on the fact that Ladlslaus,
King of Croatia, sold It to Venice in
1409 for 100.000 ducats. The Vene
tians spread their settlers and cul
ture throughout the province. The
stone lions of St. Mark still chron
icle these facte In many Dalmatian
towns.
When Venice fell under the domi
nation of Austria after the Napo
leonic wars, Dalmatla went with It.
But when Italy became united and
embraced Venice,, Dalmatla was left
outside the fold.
Italian historians say that under
Venice Dalmatla had a majority of
Italians. But when unification, made
Italy a menace to Austria, Emperor
Frane Joseph encouraged migration
of Serbs and Croats.
It Is because of a continuance of
this policy by Jugoslavia, say Mus
solini's historians, that the Serbs and
Croats now outnumber the Italians
in Dalmatla seven to one.
Describes Llon Hunt'
Since the world war the struggle
has been centered, on one side. In
erasing Italian Influence and, on the
other. In strengthening it.
The Jugoslavs began what Sena
tor Corrado Rlod called a "Hon
hunt." that Is, the destruction of 11
the Hons of St. Mark remaining In
Dalmatla. This, said the senator, was
but a symbol of the pressure that
King Alexander's government heaps
upon Italians in the Adriatic prov
Ince.
Metal Displaces Hair
LOrfDON (p) Bronlslaw Huber-
man, Polish violinist, had a new An
ventlon to show Oreat Britain when
he arrived here for concerts. It is a
bow with strands of aluminum In
stead of horse hair.

Population Increase Falls
On Deaf Ears Number
of Births Falling Yearly
ROME (&) Although Mussolini fre
quently has praised his people for
their increasing obedience, they have
m at least one point failed to live up
to his hopes.
He has preached, warned, almost
commanded larger families but the
birth rate keeps going own.
Cause Puzzles Experts
He has declared that a nation to
be powerful must be prolific and that
the blackshirt regime wants many
"bambini" but the number of births
Is smaller each year.
Most students of the situation be
lieve It Is due to hard times. Others
think It Is a new mentality.
At any rate the government sta
tistics department found Its census
returns for the first 11 months of
1032 showed that the natural In
crease In population was 44,459 be
low the same period of 1931 and 128.
,364 under that of the first 11 months
of 1930. The natural increase repre
sents number of births In excess of
deaths.
Cheap Honeymoons Help
Births were 40,057 fewer than those
of 1931 and 88,134 under those of
1930. The increase In the number of
deaths 4.403 over 1931 and 30,230
over 1930 was not enough to offset
the difference in births.
Mussolini recently took extreme
steps to check an alarming decline
in the number of marriages. He of
fered 70 per cent railroad fare reduc
tions for honeymoon trips and figures
for the last few months show the
move has borne fruit, U though com
parisons by gears are still unfavorable.
Thousands of couples took the
cheap wedding trips each month and
It is thought many of them would
otherwise have postponed their mar
riages.
Fewer Go To Altars
An Idea of the results Is given by
figures for last November, which
showed 31,763 weddings, compared
with 31,189 In October.
In the first 11 months of 1932,
however, there were 15,059 fewer mar
riages than In the first 11 months of
1931 and 41,387 fewer than In the
similar period of 1930.
More Radio Fans In Belgium
BRUSSELS (ff) ; There were 320.000
radio sets used In Belgium In 1932,
an Increase of 10 per cent In a year.
