ALL-DAY SESSION
At an all -day meeting of the worn

Monday at the "Y in Med ford, wom
en from all parta of Jackaon oountj
were In attendance and took part i"
the deliberations, adopting the fol
lowing resolutions unanimously:
Whereas, the opponents of the 18th
amendment are preparing to legalize
beer, and repeal or modify the 16th
amendment, and
Whereas, the effect of beverage
alcohol are the same, whether It i& :
sold legally or Illegally, and
Whereas, we have no reason to be
lieve that the violators of the 18th
amondment would obey the restric
tions which would of necessity be a
part of the regulations; therefore, te

Resolved, that we ask our United
States senators, our oongressmen-at-large
and our own congrwwmen to
vote against all legislation Intended
to nullify, weaken or repeal the 16th
amendment and the Volstead act, and
to vote Instead for adequate appro
priations for law law enforcement
and a campaign of education In law
observance.
We call upon the public to obey
willingly the letter and the spirit of
the law.
Resolved, for highway safety, that
total abstinence be required of all
applicants for driver's license.
These resolutions were signed by
the committee consisting of Mrs.
Lulu Howard, Mrs. P. M. Patterson,
Mrs. Marietta Pratt and. Mrs. M. U.
Hill.
Mrs. Thrasher of Grants Pass, state
director for the Loyal Temperance
Union, was present at the meeting and
gave an address regarding the work
among the youth, and also gave plans
for the future. Mrs. Thrasher stated
that she would be glad to hear from
anyone willing to work In this field.

W. 0. T. U. in Medford Is Thursday,
February 0, at the "Y," when all
supporters of this cause are welcome

Quite a substantial number of
Roosevelt supporters have weakened
In their fidelity during the last ten
days. That group Includes a promi
nent liberal on the United States su
preme court, and two Democratic
leaders In congress.
These boys wanted action. They
are not getting It and are Impatient.
They point to Mr. Roosevelt'a refusal
to lead the way on foreign debts and
budget balancing taxes. They thought
the New York congressional confer
ence a complete flop.
Some very strong forces which did
not appear In the public picture
helped bring about the unexpectedly
heavy opposition to the farm bill In
the house.
Buttressing the cloakroom work of
the presidential political secretary,
Walter Newton, the treasury depart
ment supplied the opposition with fig
ures. These seek to show the allot
ment plan would raise 900,000,000
a year by a sales tax on four com
modities. That amount Is '.bout the
same as would be raised by ay4 per
cent sales tax on all commodities.
The arguments were effective on
congressmen from the cities. They
were used also by Republicans from
farm districts who opposed the bill
largely because It was a Democratic
plan.
That same combination will, work
more, havoc In the senate when the
bill cornea up there.
Certain parties near the top are
Interesting themselves In the future
of Huey Long. They want to make It
as hard as possible for him. His In
come tax return for last year Is sup
posed to be Involved.
There Is no question but what
Long Is the outstanding thorn In the
side of nearly everyone In Washing
ton. His brash way of doing things
has rubbed the senate the wrong
way. Tet they have not put the
pincers on him the way they usually
do with young uprtarta. He braes
that he runs three states. There are
good reasons for believing many are
afraid of blm.
Nobody heretofore has been able
to do business long In Washington
the way he la conducting his.
