NEW BASKETBALL RULES
WILL GET SEVERE TEST
Rv CHARLBS A. ORCMICH
KANSAS CITY. Jan. 16. (P) A
severe and significant test of the new
basketball rules designed to retard
stalling may be made at Lawrence
Thursday night when the Missouri
Tigers and Kansas Jayhawkers, whose
respective coaches are bitterly op
posed on pie rules question, meet In
a Big Six conference game.
Coach George R. Edwards of Mis
souri, whose teams plar either a de
layed offense or the "quick-break"
attack, recently proved In a non-conference
game at Columbia that pro
longed inactivity Is possible under
the new rules if the team not in pos
session of the ball electa to use a
tight dfense under the basket, refus
ing to mix with the other team out
near the center line.
SOIL OF VALLEY
PRODUCES FINEST
TOMATO OF ALL
Rogue River Valley tomatoes are
the best.
Mao WUklns, a re.ldent of Port
lsnd, after having received soms Del
Rogue brand tomatoes from w. A.
Dates of thla city, enjoyed them ao
much he had an authority on vita
mins dig up from government sta
tistics some very surprising things
regarding tomatoes the soil in which
they should be grown, climate, etc.,
In order to produce proper vitamin
content.
To grow tomatoes under Ideal con
ditions. Mr. Wilkin, found, soil must
be sandy loam, with natural ash de
posits. Thla Is to allow growth of the
fruit, rather than the vine. The cli
mate should be such that growth of
plant and fruit la protected by sun
shiny days and warmer than average
nights.-
The soil formation of the Rogue
River valley, particularly In and
around Medford, haa a natural ash
content, and sandy loam aoll In proper
proportions not approximated any
where else tn the United States.
. It was found that the Rogue River
valley had the proper climate for
natural, perfeot growth a perfect
combination of Ideal atmospheric
conditions, plus soil texture for
growing the best tomatoes.
Vitamin D Is found In the toma
toes grown under favorable condi
tion.,. .and vitamin D Is Important.
Heretofore, this vitamin has been
found only In cod liver oil, egg yolks,
and other Irradiated foods.
The Rogue River val!ey has achieved
prominence In the minds of people
all over the world, aa being a perfect
place In which to spend a few plena-
ant daya of vacation.
Instead of exploiting southern Ore
gon aa a place to vacation, saya Mr.
wiixina, let It be sold as a Oarden of
Eden, from the vegetable and fruit
atandpotnt.
