With four win out of five tartB
thta year, the Medford high school
basketball squad 1 looking for
couple of tough gamei for this week
end to give the squad some necessary
experience. Coach Darwin k. but
aher said today.
Coach Burgher expressed a desire
to play either the Jacksonville town
team, coached by dt. tiaxoia uiuis,
or the hlh-flyinfr Ashland Normal
quad. 0Deflnlt announcement of
the games will be made tomorrow at
the latest. Coach Burgner saia.
Need Experience.
Inexperience is apt to be the thorn
in the side of the Burgherltes this
year, the coach said, as only two of
i&t year's veterans are eligible for
play all this season. Bill Knlps end
Alton Llndley. from last year's squad,
will be graduated from high school
this month, so cannot be used mucn
Lloyd Hammock won his letter last
year, and Is a good man. Coach Bur
gher srld, but did not play regularly
last year. The two veterans around
wKom Burgher la building his squad
are Red Scheel and Tom White.
"I've got a lot of good boys this
year," Coach Burgher said, "and they
axe fast, but they o need experi
ence. They need to play other high
school teams, because a few wins and
they will develop the necessary con
fidence and polish.
"Yei." he said, "I feel the boys this
year will do even better than they
did Jast year. They know their fun
damentals, and with a few more
games under their belts, no telling
what they can do."
Won 4; Lost' 1.
. 0o far, the Medford squad has won
four and lost one. The Oregon
flnnr-varsity won one and lost one
to Medford, and Medford defeated
Mt. Shasta, 44-14, Grants Pass, 83-17.
and Weed, 10-0. The game dropped
to the Oregon super-varsity was by
the small margin of two points.
' The squad Is trimmed down to
fighting form now, Burgher said, and
the big fight Is on between the play
ers for first string places. Intensive
drill on plays and fundamentals fea
tures each practice session, with
enough scrimmage to keep the boys
on edge.
Red MaoDonald, former Medford
high school football and basketball
star. Is giving promise this year of
being among the ranking basketball
players on the coast, following a stel
lar performance In the second game
of the Oregon State college quintet
against the championship - bound
Collars of Washington State.
MaoDonald, whom many sports
writers feel was given a dirty deal
by Paul SchLssler, football coach of
Oregon State, was given credit for
being one of the mainstays In the
Oregon State game Mrainat Washing
ton State Saturday, when, subbing
for Davis at guard, he dropped in
three field goals and harried the
Cougars blind by recovering the ball
on Coungar offensive plays.
MaoDonald Is a big, hard fighter,
and consistent, and the Morning Ore
gonlan. In writing of the game with
the Cougars, says In part:
"Red MacDonald, subbing for Davis
at guard, put up a great battle for
Oregon State In the second half.
Time and time again he recovered
the ball and gathered three field
goals as well."
Oregon State plays the University
of Idaho tonight and tomorrow night
at Moscow, thus ending their first
road trip. By breaking even with
the Cougars, Oregon State is given
ranking position with the best I
rftirthwest basketball squads, and
sports authorities have put on their
glasses to take a better look at "Slats"
Olll's boys. Basketball dopeaters con
sider Idaho a "setup."

TEXACOS ITCH FOR
BASKETBALL FIGHT
Basketball flreworka threaten to
explode in Independent circle aoon.
with the two leading quada of the
valley, the Texaco team, managed by
Roy Shreve, and the Jacksonville
town team, managed by Dr. Harold
Gluts, looking for a chance to scalp
each other.
Both teams have enviable records
so far this season, having defeated
opponents by large boo res, and
neither team will feel right about
things until the score s settled.
Both teams are made up largely of
former Medford high school players.
and basketball fans are watching the
progress of the teams with Interest.
"So Jacksonville wants to play us.
do they?" was Roy Shreve's reply to
the Information that Manager Glllls
had Issued a challenge. "Well, we'll
play them, and put them back in
their places."
Manager Glllls of the Jacksonville
team Is equally confident of his
charges, and declared he had been
seeking a game with the Texaco out
fit for several weeks, but hadnt been
able to put them down on any .date.
Rivalry la Intense between the two
teams, as Wilton White, formerly of
the Texaco squad, switched to the
Jacksonville team when two of the
Jacksonville men, Jack Caldwell and
Robert Forbes, registered at the Ash
land Normal school and axe now on
that squad.
So far, the Jacksonville team has
defeated Butte Falls, 70-67; Gold Kill.
66-19, and Sams Valley, 21-14. The
Texaco team defeated Butte Falls,
S8-25, and the Oregon super-varsity.
37-29, and lost to the Ashland Nor
mal, 4S-26. Jacksonville also lost to
Phoenix, 33-17, but Coach Glllls said
he played his second string against
the Phoenix squad.
In defeating Sams Valley, Coach
Glllls said he felt a relative strength
between his team and the Texaco
outfit was available, in that Sams
Valley defeated Butte Falls by prac
tically the same score that Texaco
did, and also that Jacksonville ran
up a larger score on Butte Falls than
Texaco did. Jacksonville scored 70
points against Butte Falls, while Tex
aco was held to 58. j
"We want to play the game here In
Medford if we can," Manager Shreve
said, "but we don't want to dig down
In our pockets to pay for the hall.
Whenever we feel we can pay ex
penses here, we're ready to play."
With the Medford Tigers wanting a
game with either Jacksonville or the i
Southern Oregon Normal for this
week-end, the Jacksonvllle-Texaco
game may be delayed, but both teams
are looking for a shot at each other,
and no fooling.
The Texaco outfit is composed of
Odd Hughes, George Harrington, '
Archie Laing an Ivan Harrington,
forwaids; Virgil Swanson, center, and
Bob Dietrich, Herman Newland, Tule
Williams and Roan Green, guards.
Jackson irllle's squad Is made up of
Ray Ward, Orville Wilson, Ray Hun
aaker, George Smith, Bob Lewis, Dick
La wis, Wilton White. Dick Hartman
and A. Babbs. The two Lewis boys
and George Smith are from the
championship St. Mary's team of last
year, and we are showing better ball
this year, according to theQ coach.
