Bitabeth Mann, one of our ftw re
maining beloved ploneeri, passed to
her reward at her home In Central
Point, Oregon December 38, at I a. m.
after a very ahort lllneaa. Although
ahe waa pact BO year of age her death
was unexpected, aa ahe waa very active
up until the last. Bhe waa a real
dent of southern Oregon for 44 yeara
Mrs. Mann waa born at Clay county,
Missouri. In Augu, lOIS.

Mann, now deceased, atarted from
Kansas In 1879, with an emigrant
train, taking their four children, Joe
Mann, John Mann, Preston Mann,
Mrs. Susan Irwin (Preston Mann la
now deceased.) The train consisted
of 180 wagona and approximately 1000
people. They had minor dlfflcultlea
on the road, and twice the Indiana
stampeded their stock, which delayed
them for several days. From Kansas
they came directly to Portland, Ore.,
taking all summer to make the trip.
From Portland they went to Grand
Bonds, Ore., (now La Grande), thence
" to Modoe in Klamath county, and
Modoc to Central Point, by way oi
Crater lake In September, 1888, tak
ing two daya to make the trip,
Mrs, Mnnn waa a very courageous
mother and wife, and one of those
wonderful persons who helped blar.e
the troll and helpeil build this great
northwest. Sho will be mourned and
missed by a host of friends both In
northern and southern Oregon.
She leaves three children, two sons,
Joe Mann and John Mann of Central
Point, and Mrs. Suslo Irwin of Cali
fornia, alx grandchildren, 7 great
grandchildren. . Funeral eervloea will be conducted
from the Perl Funeral Home Friday
at 3 o'clock, Hev, J. M. Johnson of
ficiating. Intermont at Central Point
cemetery.

Many of our citizens attended the
funeral of the late J. C. Pendleton
at Medford last Tuesday. Mr. Pendle
ton had been a resident of this dis
trict since 1803 and waa quite prom
inent In Its social and business act
ivities. He was known here as a great
lover of horsea. for many yeara en
gaging In the horse business during
which time he raised and trained
several horses for the county fair
race which wer held then at the
old fair grounda near Central Point.
Mr. Pendleton up to th laat ftwi
year, took an active part in politics,
serving twice a county assessor and
many yeara as deputy. He was known
as a good neighbor and one who
would go far out of hla way to aid
hi friend In times of distress and
sorrow.
Miss Bee Seabrook of Portland,
spent Christmas here with her par
ents, returning to Portland Monday.
The S. M. Tuttle family are recov
ering from an Influenza attack.
Other victims of the disease are Floyd
Hart and Mr. Clemens.

A "plurlea citation" waa f!Ud this
afternoon by Attorney Porter J. Neff
in the recount petition against Gor
don L. Schermerhorn. An affidavit
accompanied the "plurlea citation,"
setting forth that Coroner W. H. Con
ger haa been unable to find Schermer
horn within the confines of Jackson
county. A "phirlea citation" la not
as bid aa It sounds, and, In plsln
English, stripped of legal verbiage,
means "the third citation."
Coroner Conger, who acts as sheriff,
in mattera in which the sheriff la
legally concerned, makea dally vtalts
to the. Schermerhorn home In an ef
fort to locate him.
According to report received by
Attorney Neff'a oflice, Schermerhorn
la In Yreka. Calif., and vicinity, but
la expected to show up at the court
house next Tuesday morning to be
sworn In aa aherlff, when the coro
ner will serve the citation upon him.
This accomplished, Schermerhorn,
through counsel, will move. It Is aald,
to block the recount, upon legal
grounds.
Under Oregon law, a recount must
be held, "In not less than three days,
nor more than seven days," after ser
vice haa been matte.
The official count gave Schermer
horn a majority of 123 In the race
for sheriff, over Ralph G. Jennings,
"write-In" candidate at the last elec
tion. The petition asserts that 381
Jennings votes were discarded by elec
tion boards on technicalities and that
Jennings was elected shorlff by not
less than 07 votes.
