throughout tha country at the cur
tailment of funds tor carrying on the
vartoua llnea of health protection and
tha following la an extract from an
appeal being aent out to all ' atate
chairmen of public health by the
publlo welfare department of the
General Federation of women's duns.
"Throughout our land, govern
mental economlea are seriously
threatening the foundation which wa
have labored these many years to
build, and are seeking to tear down
our health structures.
"If American stability la to survive,
then the health of our people must
be our first consideration. National
atate, and local health budgets must
not be slashed. Our health stand
ards must be maintained and tro
proved against all odda. We muat
work for constructive, not destructive,
economy.

or seven Inmate serving short term
from tnis county, who If they have

will be freed soon.
The stato parole board has com
plete record of each prisoner, almost
from th cradle, and their previous
criminal activities are taken into con
sideration, In extending clemency,
also tha number of times they have
been given paroles without good re
sults.

life for the Siskiyou tunnel train
robbery murders, each year filed ap
plication for a parole, a a matter of

Luther Preeeott Hubbard, a real

hi extreme age, which finally caused

Mr. Hubbard wa born January 30,
1840, in New York city, and at th

to join the Dnlon army, being
named corporal of the Second New
Hampshire, with which organization
b saw active aervloe until ha waa
transferred to Main a a federal dis
bursing officer, remaining at hla post
for the duration of th Civil war.
With th signing of peace, hs de
cided to go west, finally settling In
Minneapolis, Minn., and aecurlng a
position with what wa then an In
fant Industry, th Plllabury Flour
company. His financial experience in
the army, hi energy and leal re
sulted in hla rapid advancement, and
when he resigned, after 43 years' un
interrupted service, he wa treasurer
of tha company, one of the largest
and most prosperous corporatlona In
th entire northwest.
Looking about for 1 place to spend
his well earned leisure, Mr. Hubbard
decided on southern Oregon and with
hla wlfa and daughter, Margaret,
oam to Medford In 1008, puroha
ing an orchard on the Old Stage
road, where they made their home
for many years, finally purchasing
their preaent residence on Ashland
avenue and removing to this olty.
