"Quentln, Loiiclv a? Jane, Solici
tors, Commissioners for Oathi. eto."
Two of tbe partners in this firm
were, on s golden October alter
noon, quarrelling In an upper room
of tbe lath-and-n!aster bouse. They
bad not chosen to meet In the
offices below, because It was a Sat
urday and the rooms bad been
dusted and darkened for the week
end. They sat. Instead, upstairs.
In what waa really Mrs. Cane's
drawing-room; and their anger
carried much ot their speech to
her as she sat trembling In her
bedroom on the other side ot the
shaky wall.
"1 won't be apoke to Ilka that,
Mr. Lodely, not by anyone and by
you least of all." Her husband's
roloe was growing regrettably
ragged and blgo, she thought, and
he wasn't expressing himself quite
so gentlemanly aa usual; but be
was sticking to bis point, he was
standing np for blmself and, al
though she trembled, she craned
her neck to hear blm. But Mr.
Lodely was exploding again.
"Dammit, Cane, if ever there
was a time wben we've all got to
face plain facta I"
"I'm facing 'em all right I can
epell worda like ruin and bank
ruptcy aa well as you and better
than Mr. Quentln."
"Quentln has lost his grasp ot
affaire; he'a 111; dying. By Ood, I
never tbougbt to envy i dying man
but I envy him! Whatever la tn
store for us won't hurt him he'll
be out of Itl Done!"
"He'll leave hla wife and the
little girl behind, though, won't
he? What'll they have to live on?

Mrs Cane gulped and held on to
the arms of her cbalr. She waited
for the crash ol Mr. Lodely fling
ing himself upon her poor James
. . . But the crash did not come.
There waa a moment's terrible
silence and tben tbe drawing-room
door opened. Peeping through her
own, ahs saw the visitor cross tbe
upper hall and go heavily down the
stairs; s big, red-faced man In rid
ing-clothes. He looked dated, she
thought; for a moment ahe won
dered whether he were drunk or
ill.
She went to the window ot the
hall wben bis alow footsteps had
dually faded from tbe house; she
could see, by peering out and
down, Into the yard ot the Inn next
door. Within five minutes Mr.
Lodely came Into It and abe
watched blm dig Into one pocket
after the other for the sixpence to
the boy who was getting his horse.
Sixpence? She sniffed a shilling,
more likely. They'd never had any
sense of money, either him or his
wife. They'd spent every penny of
tbelr Income tor tbe last ten years,
although they Insisted that they
lived a simple country life.
Mrs. Cane, mouse-brown at her
upper window, checked over the
Lodely simplicities; open bouse to
the county, horses, dogs, servants
sables and tailor-mades for shop
ping days In Toxeter, hand-spun
tweeds for every day. Ot course.
there waa poor tittle Mark, he was
a great expense and one had never
grudged blm the best of everything.
And what hope waa there tor his
future now?
Mr. Lodely, down In. tbe inn-
yard, mounted and rode slowly out
of ber eight; but the eyes ol her
mind remained upon him, much as
her tbln shoulder remained against
the window-pane, because she her
self waa tired and unhappy, In her

Imagination she followed the rider's
home-faring; she jaw him come
out from under the old archway ot
the inn and turn into tbe Tarn.
Market, and then up High Street;
be would take bis way out ot the
town by one ot the many lanes tbat
climbed Into the folds of Upper
Mallard hill.
She raised her head and gated
at Upper Mallard hill, tbat great,
golden buttress curving between
Klnge Mallard and the world.
"The gentry" lived np there; al
most she could sea the roots of the
house she called In her west-conn
try way "Lodely's." And iba could
see tbat all tbe way up to that
house, people touched their bats to
tbe man on the horse. Bankrupt
he might be, but they would always
touch their hats to him. Whereas
they would only stare at her and
James.
"Em! Here a minute!"
Sh Jumped and turned; James
vaa motioning her Into the drawing-room.
But her thoughts were
still vaguely with the man who
bad recently left It and, aa she
mechanically straightened cushions
and emptied aa ssh-tray, she
asked
"Yon dont think he'll do any
thing to himself, do yon?"
The reassurance ahe expected
did not come.
He might It's all he can do.
And It he did I'd be the last te
atop him."
She glanced at tier husband and
her pride in hla defiance gave place
to her usual taint tear. Yea, tor til

and harmless-looking, and tuih

nearly always frlgbteded ot him.
He had a fixed smile that well.
she couldn't put a name to It But
when he told her to atop fidgeting
and come to the window, ahe
obeyed him anxloualy.
"Look out there!" be com
mended. "Out along the line ot
tbe bay to the old coastguard'! cot
tage. See that bit of level greea
field just below It?" And when
she nodded "Well, that's where I
was going to build my house. No
Upper Mallard lor me, with gentle
men's residences all round me, eye
ing me right and left I planned
to build tor myself, out there wltk
the aea under the windows and a
private road between the back door
and this god-forsaken hole ot a
town. But all that'a gone."
"Poor James!" ahe laid timidly.
"Do do yon think ot going back
to London tor a new start? Speak
ing for myself I'd be glad enough.
People'll be staring and pointing
here lor a long while yet whatever
sort of a home we manage to keep
together."
"Let 'em stare! I'll be king ot
this dung-heap yet!"
"James!"
"But In London I'm nobody." He
passed bit band over bis faci and
seemed to wipe away some of his
bitterness. His Hps were folded la
tbelr habitual half-smile when he
naked -"Where's Leila?"
Mrs. Cane went to the door and
called. Down the upper staircase
came sidling a child of eight or
nine, whose eyes flitted trom on
parent to tbe other with a aly, at
tentive brightness.
