The ancient "rumor ' of the build
ing of a railroad "from this city to
the coast" waa revived last week by
Vie Humboldt Times of Eureka, Cal.,
but, according to the Del Norte
Triplicate, "failed to create a ripple
of excitement in Crescent City" and
"regarded as Just another Joke."
Last summer a furore of rail build
ing arose In this city when It was
proposed to borrow money from the
Reconstruction Finance Corporation
to build the railroad.
The latest report says "Influential
Los Angeles men back the project,"
that contracts for feeding the work
ers have been let, that work "will
start next week," that $30,000,000
and two years' time will be required,
and- that "It is hinted the Great
Northern Is back of the move." K.
C. Busch and Jack Russell are con
ducting Via preliminary plans and
"rushing action."
The Del Norte Triplicate places
no credence In the "wUd rumors"
and further says:
"Local people ridiculed the rumor
from the very first, and have been
a tempting to keep the story from be
ing circulated for fear It will result
In attracting a large number of un
employed men to this section, who
may later become wards of the coun
ty." For the past ten days there has
been "street talk" here that "another
railroad was in the air, along with
new gold discoveries."

1 2 CARS TURKEYS
PORTLAND, Dec. 14 (AP) Twelve
carloads of Oregon Turkeys are sched
uled to go to California this week.
shippers here said today. Weather
conditions during the past week or so
have limited the movement of birds
from practically all leading produc
ing points of Oregon and Idaho. Last
week, with better conditions, around
23 carloads were shipped from Oregon
to eastern markets, and four to Cali
fornia. Eastern shipments by freight
have ceased.
Because of the cold weather many
turkeys received here have arrived
frozen making reshtpment practically
impossible. As a result of the cold
weather many growers are talking of
delaying killing. The trade here be
lieves this would result In a grave
situation. Inasmuch as It would
throw the great bulk of birds upon
an already oversupplled local trade.

IT was a paradoxical plan by which Farrell Armitage hoped to
make Barbara Quentin his wi(e. Instead of trying to impress
the girl with the advantages ol the Armitage lortune, Farrell used
his wraith to make Mark Loritly K more eligible suitor. Rather than
place himself in a more favorable position, Farrell helped to improve
his rival's chances.
