THE WOLF SMILES
TIE day following Santa hid with

THE BEWITCHED POOLS.
The trip became much easier for
Inga and Plnocchlo after they had
been changed Into red foxea. They
loped along rapidly. But all the while
Inga wouldn't let go of the tiny gold
mirror. She carried it now In her
teeth.
At first they raced as fast as they
could go, up and down hills and across
fields In Just the path the little mirror
had shown.
But the farther they went the
thirstier they become. And they
never saw a river or a lake or even
a little pond. Finally Plnocchlo
stopped.
"Inga, I'm so thirsty I can't go any
farther," he said. And just then they
saw a little pool of water.
Plnocchlo rushed up to It but Just
as he touched the water with his red
tongue a little voice said:
'Who drinks of me
Will henceforth be
A prisoner here
Tor many a year."
"Stop, stop,' cried Inga. "That's a
bewitched pool. Come, we'll go on.
Surely there will be another pool
soon."

Suddenly they saw another little
pool of water, lying blue and cool
looking among the trees. They rushed
up to It but again, as Plnocchlo
stooped to drink, a little voice Md:

"Stop, atop. Plnocchlo, Inga cried.
"This pool, too. Is bewitched.'
"Inga, I cant watt any longer. I
must drink.'
"But If you do I will be left all
alone to go on to the cave of the
bats.'
"That's true," said Plnocchlo. "I'll
wait one more time."
So they went on, this .time slower
than ever.
Again they spotted another pool,
and raced up to it, but again a little
voice si-ai'ted to give the same warn
ing. Just as Plnocchlo was going to
drink, the little Fairy of the Woods
rose up before them out of the grouna.
"Oh, I was so afraid I wouldn't get
here In time." she said. "These pools
are placed along here by the witch
you are seeking Just so she can stop
people from coming to her'cave. I
have brought you water," and she
pulled a tiny flask from her pocket.
The Fairy pulled out the cork and
spilled the water on the ground, and
as she did the water spread and spread

When they were finished, the Fairy
dipped her little bottle in the pool

Possibly -some players will find
that method easier than beginning
with two and stopping with a fig
ure one higher than the number
of tricks set, as for a set of five:
Two plus three plus four plus five
plus six; multiplied -by 80 equals
1,000.

by 60 In either case one can di
vide by two and add one cipher
or two ciphers, as the case may be.
