Hopes of Basketball Title
By Artbnr Schoenl.
Paced with tbe task of unearthing
two forwards and a guard. Ooacn
Darwin Burgher held first basketball
practice at tbe blgb school this after
noon. Graduation robbed blm of the eer
vices of bis two six-foot basket
shooters, Wilton White and Bob Delt
rlck, and fast little George Harring
ton, eo Burgher's bopes of sending
another team to the state tourna
ment are slimmer.
His team this winter will be built
around his mainstay of last year, Bed
Scheel, whose consistent ringing of
IB points a gsme at tbe Salem meet
earned blm an all-state guard selec
tion. Besides Scheel, Burgher's only vete
rans back are Llndley, bulky, aggres
sive center, and Tom White, forward.
Hammock and Knlps have seen ser
vice, as has GUlnsky, but none of the
trio Is In the class with White and
Deltrlck. Botb are excellent shots,
tail and rangy.
1,1st Is Scanned.
Most of Medford's hopes of repeat
ing tbe 1031-82 team's record lie In
uncovering strong floor men from the
"unknown" list, men who showed up
well In the lnterclass games last week.
Burgher will probably fill the vacant
posts with some of the following:
Russell Brown, Wayne Harris, Max
"Glltnsky, BUI Luman, Harold Drove,
Stan Vtunnnan, Jerry Trill, Bob Elson,
Hoke ' Curtis, Don Stuart, Alva Mer
rltt. Bob Sherwood and Severson.
Medford will sweep Into action this
week-end If negotiations wltb Mt.
Shasta for a game ben Friday or Sat
urday are completed. On Deoember
30 and 29, Medford high meets the1
university of Oregon supervarstty,
which la on a barnstorming tour or
southern Oregon that week.
Burgher Is dickering wltb a num
ber of upstate schools for dates on
his schedule. The Oregon Frost), Sa
lem or Cbemawa, may coma down
here for a two-game aeries January
27-28. A trip to the coast to play
Marshfleld and North Bend and one
upstate to meet Roaeburg and Eugene
are being considered, pending replies
from those schools. .:..

WINNING TEAMS ENJOYED
BOOM IN GATE RECEIPTS
By ALAN GOULD.
Associated Preas Sport Editor.
NEW YORK, Dec. 42. (AP) De
spite a general decline of approxi
mately 10 per cent for the 1032 sea
son, college football attendance re
corded an exceptional and unexpected
number of gain, due to tbe attraction
supplied by teams combining the win
nlng habit with , colorful perform
ances. A survey by the Associated Press
among representative colleges reveals
substantial gains In attendance b'y 14
out of a total of 40. These ranged
from a fractional increase to a high
mark of 300 per cent, reported bv
George Washington university (Wash
ington, D. O.) In playing this season
before 03,800 fans In seven home
games.
The undefeated or championship
teams enjoyed good business, although
the reduction of tisltet prices scaled
down the year's profits. Purdue show
ed an Increase of 40 per cent In at
tendance.. The "big three" on the Paelfio coast
all showed declines at the "gate,"
but they were better than the aver
age. Southern California played be
fore an estimated 470,000 In nine
games is against 667.000 In 10 games
last year. California and Stanford
also showed losses, but the University
of California at Los Angeles turned
up with a tremendous increase, thanks
to a successful team.

Pass Brings Score.
On tbe first play a gaping hole
was opened In the Notre Dame line
and the Ma - pound quarterback
dodged through to tbe 81-yard line.
It was from this point that Homer
Griffith, on fourth down, rifled a
pretty pass to Bob McNelsh. Unop
posed, he leaped high Into the air to
snatch the ball and take the two steps
necessary to cross tbe goal.
It waa ons of the numerous quick
kicks which kept Notre Dame on the
defensive most of the afternoon that
made the second touchdown possible.
Charles Jsskwhlch fumbled the ball
as It bounded toward his goal and Bob
Ersklne recovered on the 36-yard line.

FootbaU's m&n of the hour, Coach

All the high points of the drama
were rehearsed from tbe point where
little Irvine Warburton returned
punt 30 yards In the second period
to rnslte the first Trojsn touchdown
possible to the goal l!ne stand of
Southern California In the final quar

passing attack.
It was generally agreed that the
irreat llne-plav and spectacular quick
kicks of the Southern California team
nlus the inefficient blocking of the
Notre Dame backs were responsible
for the outcome.
The amazlnat run of tow-headed
Warburton drew much comment. He

went down under the punt, reversed

Big BUI Morgan, Medford high
school's most Illustrious football pro
duct, was awarded honorable men
tion on the 1932 All-American eleven
selected Sunday bv four outstanding
coaches of the nation.
His selection follows cn the heels
of other honors accorded him by
coast sports writers. Practt?allv all
scribes placed him alongside Ernie
Smith of Southern California at first
string tackle on their all-coast teams.
Besides pteylng atrresslve football
for Medford hlsh. Morgan was a good
enough basketball player to win an
all-state guard selection. The com
bination of quick -footedness and flht
made him one of the greatest tackles
Oregon ever had.
Bernte Hughes, another Medford
man. was selected as all-coast center
on the United Press eleven. L. H.
Gregory, Oregonlan sports editor, de
clared Hughes was the best center
on the coast, but was hammered bv
his team's showing against Southern
California. Hughes was a "slxty
mlnute center" and tough enough to
bold bis own with any opposing ball
snapper. Yquel, first string Trotan
center, lasted Just four plays against

Bill Bowennan, third of the Med
