ules provided, Portland la only two
hours distant, .Seattle is four hours
away, San Francisco may be reached

Utah Pioneer
Dies In Sleep
BAKER. Dec. 8. iff) Joseph Bar
ton, who was instrumental In the de
velopment of Utah, especially the sec
tion In the vicinity of Salt Lake City,
died at his hom this morning while
sleeping.
Born In England. July 38, 1848. Mr.
Barton came to the United States in
1802 and moved to Utah the same
year.

and larger game fish and more up
land game birds were stocked In Ore
gon the past year than ever before
In the history of game conservation
in Oregon, according to a report of
the state game commission today.
Other substantial progress ln game
management was accomplished as a
result of the first year's operation of
the 10-year wild life program, despite
a serious decrease in the revenues of
the game department.
Fishing was better In lakes and
streams following the liberation of
33.668.000 game fish and the salvag
ing or more than five million sptney-
rayed fish from the sloughs of the
Columbia and Willamette.
More than 30,000 upland hunting
birds were released ln the fields.
During the year expenditures of the
commission amounted to $400,000. To
this sum was added the oontribu
tions of governmental cooperative
agencies, making a grand total of
about one million dollars.
