CAREOFDISlED
BRINGS MILLIONS
TO OREGON PURSE
"Hundred of thousand! of dollars
that now are coming annually Into
Oregon will b withheld from the
channels of business, and Instead, the
burden of higher local and state taxes
will occur If organized groups suc
ceed tn stopping various benefits now
existing under law for disabled vete
rans," says L. C. Oarlock, Medlord Le
gion post commander, who quotes
statement by Louis A. Johnson, na
tional commander of the American
Legion.
In the statement just Issued, the
national commander said, In part, as
follows:
The chamber of commerce of the
United States, through Its (legitimate
or Illegitimate?) stepdaughter, -'Nel
as the American Legion has come to
know the National Economy league,
la seeking, through misrepresenta
tion to unduly alarm the country re
garding the cost of caring for dis
abled veterans. Admiral Byrd Is the
spear-head for 'Kel' In touring the
country. He Is the distinguished son
of a distinguished family and while
I have naught to say against him
personally, I believe that unwittingly
and unintentionally ha Is the stalking
horse for that comparatively small
group whose profits In one year
(1038) were 90,300,000,000.
"The opposition of this group to
the care of the disabled has been
traced to the fact that out of their
huge profits they pay a large share
of the federal Income tax, and If the
care of the disabled Is curtailed their
taxes can be reduced because the
burden can then be shifted to the
little fellow or local tax payer, few
of whom pay or know very much
about any federal Income tax. In the
year of our greatest prosperity, 1028,
this group of opponents pstd a total
federal income tax of $008,000,000.
leaving them an average net Income
of $.130,000 each out of their more
than six billion dollars' profits.
"If their scheme should succeed, It
la easy enough to understand that
Oregon would Immediately have sevs
ral thousand disabled veterans
thrown upon the mercy of the local
communities. Many of these disabled
men would have no means of support,
and Instead of spending federal pay
ments for groceries, medicine, cloth
ing, etc., would be objects of charity.
"Therefore, the channels of trifle
In the communities of Oregon would
lose that Income now coming to them
and In addition, the local taxes for
the upkeep of local hospitals county
farms and other Institutions would
Increase. This does not take Into eon
alderatlon the human misery Involved,
nor the fact that It Is cheaper In the
end to cure these men and to restore
them to self-support. How much
wiser to 'cure rather than 'curse.' "

THE HOME OF DREAD LUCE MOTHER MADE
The Goblins Will Get You If
You Don't Watch Out
OVER THE RADIO, in the magazines, on the bill boards millions are
being spent to ballyhoo fresh coffee.
You are told that coffee is unfit for ubo unless fresh that stale
coffee will keep you awake, give you the heebie-jeebies in fact, almost
any kind of disaster may result. ,
Now if this is true, why take chances on any but fresh coffee even
though this or that new-fangled dohicky, or some magic method is sup
posed to keep old coffee new. Why risk these terrible calamities that coffee
roasters1 themselves, predict if the coffee doesn't happen to be fresh? -
Why not play safe? Buy really fresh coffee newly ground then you
are sure. Buy Z-MOR-U roasted today here tomorrow and ground the
day you buy it. If the can is a necessary convenience, take Golden West.
It's out of tiie Portland factory today, and on our shelves tomorrow.
Maybe the calamity howler is right. We personally guarantee the fresh
ness of these coffees. ' .
