"Hera to sins and to males the peo

petual axplanatlon (or hts being
wherever he happens to be air Harry
Lauder, whose songs hare traveled on
the winds of every oountry from
Zululand to China, back again to the
Soottleh highlands, and over the seas
and home again, for 60 years, and
five times around the world leaned
back In his bed at the Hotel Med
ford thta morning to puff his friendly
pipe, with fingers still marked with
the "coal of less prosperous daya."
"It'a my weather-glass," he said of
his pips, resting elbows on his Scotch

house at Arbroath I made my first
appearance. I ssng Tho' Poor I'm a

added, with another emptying of hta
pipe Into the ash tray. "I sang to
make their! cry then. It was In the
atmosphere. Now I sing to make
them laugh, x raise my audience to
my own enthusiasm.
On the stsge tonight at the Cra
terlan theater, he then announced,
"111 do It again: you watch and see.
First their feet begin to move, then
like a flash the rhythm has traveled
to the mind. I love to catch the
response 01 a new audience. They are
not aware of what Is happening to
them. My old audiences know whst's
going on."
"It's the same the world over," Sir
Harry Lauder continued, from the
Zulu audience, bead-clad, to the
sophisticated New Yorker. The world
responds to rhythm and the slmpltC'
lty and sincerity of the folk song.
"It must be real to live on." he
added. "All my songs are atorles
based on love and domestic trouble.
Wherever you go, you know, every.
where, every day, some one Is loving
and someone Is bickering. It's fun
damental. I get them with my
rhythm, be It fast or alow."
Coaxed back to talk -of Scotland,
and asked for an answer to the old
Scotch Joke, Sir Hairy laughed. "It
originated In America. We laugh at
you because It's all wrong. The
Scotch are the most generous people
In the world. You should hsve been
a bit thrifty yourselves during the
past few years. You wouldn't be In
auch a panic today." He returned to
puffing on his pipe.
Mr. Lauder is accompanied by his
niece. Miss Qreta Lauder, who goes
everywhere with him, and who will
run his new home, now under con

Tonight he will alng. among other
