Schillings Products Are
Woven Into West History
On brisk iinsw morning, mft
Mm In the 80'a, tt trtll j of
San Pranoisco were caught and ki!d:
by & erie of billboard tbat bad
auddenly appeared out of nowher.
They wer scattered lrom one end
of trie city to the other. Each one
bore Mil puzzling legend:
"Would you plant your pota
toes green? Then why ahould
your tea be painted green?"
In theee modern daya -we are aooua
. tomed to being ahouted at by lurid
advertising, but Zi yeara ago that
poster wm a sensation. The campaign
continued. It oon revealed the sur
prising Information that all green
tea was artificially colored with
harmful pigment!. The etatement
was made by two daring young mer
chant! who, among other thing!, had
tea to sell.
Thue It wee that August Schilling
and George Volkmenn shocked San
nranclsoo women Into demanding
pure tea. The same message was car
ried to other towns. Grandmothers
of the west atlll remember that
quaint campaign with a amile but
as a result the harmful coloring of
j tea soon ceased as a world-wide prac-
- tloe.
Tha facetious "green potato" ad
'. vertlsement was one of the first bat-
tie cries in the cause of pure food.
It came at a time when adultera
tion was the rule rather than the ex
ception. Yet tt wai only th natural
sequel to another Inoldent. not In

Schilling tradition. One morning In
their office oa tower Market Street.
August Schilling b&nde4 to hta part
ner a scrap of paper on which till
sentenoe was scribbled::
-Schilling quality shall be that
which 9 women out of 10 would
want it they knew all of the
facts.
Read again that simple statement
of fair dealing. It beo&me the corner
stone of a great Institution. And re
member this It was not ahoutet in
the market place In spirit of self
virtue. It was a simple statement
made to themselves by two very earn
est young men.
The 'painted tea episode was only
one of series. Thoee that preceded
It, and others to follow through the
years, were leas dramatic but equally
as far reaching. For example, at a
time when chicory was a common
coffee adulterant, no chicory found
Its way Into Schilling coffee. A few
years later, John W&namaker. . re
tailer, and the House of Schilling, a
manvifacturer, were the first to offer
a. "Money-back" guarantee on the
goods they sold. Few can realise wha-t
a profound Influence that has had
on modern business. With only a.
slight change, the original Schilling
guarantee appears today on every
Schilling package:
M Your grocer returns your mon
ey at our expense on any Schil
ling Product for any reason
whatsoever. Tour statement is
enough. Don't return the goods."
Of them all. It still remains the
most complete guarantee, the sim
plest statement ol good faith and
means just what it says.
