of being a voice 1b Juat about the

stage footfall.
I found the call sheet for "Frisco
Jenny" (the new title tacked on Ruth
Chatterton's "Common Ground"),
prescribing: "Stage 4 First voice
second voice 0 a. m."
There was something almost un
canny about that order. Just a couple
of voices needed not the faces. Al-
most touching In Its pathos, the busl-
neas of being a voiced Just a voice . .
But investigation reveals the otner
side of the picture, -and It has its
points.
In the first place, a voice doesn't
have to get up early and rush out
to the studio to be Interviewed oy
the casting director. His age, height,
weight and color of eyes make no dif
ference. He can see about the Job
over the telephone. If he has a bed
4. side "phone, he can stay comfortable
while calling, and If rejected, can re
cline again with that easy feeling of
"well, at least I've tried."
And If he gets the Job, and hauls
out of the feathers, there are fur
ther compensations. You don't have
to put gTease paint on your vocal
chorda to be a voice, you don't have
to worry about whether your hair la
oiled and slicked, and you don't have
to decide whether this certain tie or
that special suit will best set off
that certain something about you
which you know some day will be
"discovered,"
You can dreas for the beach, for
a hike, for golf, or riding, or for any
thing or nothing. It doesn't matter.
As such, you won't have to bother
about fan mall, won't have to spend
money for photographs for adoring
fans, won't have to be nice to the
cameraman so he'll notice your "beat
angles" and in fact, you don't bother
about anything except Just being a
voice.
On the other hand, of course, you
get little money and absolutely no
acclaim. But it's a Job and some
thing to sing about.

TREAT FOR TASTE
Ever hear of wheat nominyT
If you haven't tried this easily
homemade Oregon food you have a
pleasant surprise 19 store, says Mrs.
Mabel C. Mack, home demonstration
agent.
Wheat hominy, of course. Is Just
whole wheat without the outer coat
ing or bran. It does not have the
vitamin or mineral content of un
treated whole wheat, but is really
preferable for young children and
adults having digestive difficulties.
It Is neither so Irritating nor laxa
tive as plain whole wheat.
To make the hominy, Mrs. Mack
says to place a quart of clean wheat
in an agate or enamel kettle (never
aluminum or tin) and add one level
teaapoon of concentrcted lye. Add
cold water to cover and boll 10 mln
utae or until husks come-off. Stir
with a clean wooden stick.
The liquid with t'ne more or less
dissolved husks Is then poured off
and the lye Is cleaned from the wheat
by adding twice as much cold water
as wheat, which la then brought to
a boll and drained. This process r
repeated with clean water. Add boil
ing water, one tablespoon of salt to
each quart of dry wheat used, and
boll for about an hour.
The hominy may then be served
as & cereal with milk and augax, as
a side dish with butter, cream or
white sauce, as a dessert with butter
and brown sugar syrup, or In almost
any way that ordinary whole wheat
may be used. Where cracked whole
wheat Is called for iu any recipe,
chopped or ground hominy may be
used.
