Van Scoyoo field next Saturday after,

high at Portland Thanksgiving day,
tor the mythical etate title.
The decision, which came late Sat

between Principal 0. O. Smith of
Medford high, repreaentatlvea of the
Hood River achool, the Portland In
teracholaatlc authorities, and Jame
3, Richardson of the Multnomah Sta
dium, was made known In an exolu
elve story carried by The Mall Trib
une Sunday morning.
The final verdict came aa a sur
prise to Medford atudents and citi
zens. At noon Saturday. Hood River
In a telephone converaatlon, had
. flatly refused to play Medford high,
insisting that they would play The
Dalles, in a combination seml-tltie
and revenge game.
Smith In Conference.
Principal Smith flew to Portland
Saturday for a conference with Port
land association directors, at which
the Hood River school was repre
sented. Hood River waa Informed that The
Dalles game, would receive no con
sideration and waa advised, according
to reports received here, that unless
Hood River played Medford next Sat
urday the Burghermelstora would be
named as the Thanksgiving day con
tender at Portland. Hood
gued that Jefferson and Medford
hould play here next Saturday, while
she played The Dallea In a return
game, but later agreed to make the
trip here, for the elimination con-
took a week of dickering to con
aummate the game. Hood River at
no stage of the proceeding manlfest
lne any great desire to play Medford.
Principal Smith la atlll In Port

which will be held this afternoon, to
aelect a referee and attend to other
details.

The New Contract Code
5 Analyzed by an Expert
EDITOR'S NOTE: This la the flrat of three articles on the new contract bridge rules by Lieut. Alfred M.
Gruenther, U. 8. A., to whom the nation's experts turn aa referee of their Important tournaments. He officiated
at the Lenr-Culbertaon match. Espcoially Important to the player will be his analysis of penalties for Infringe
ments of the laws. He will compare In detail the new and old penalties, the reason therefor, as well as the
philosophy of the scoring changes)
By LIEUT. ALFRED M. GRUENTHER, V. I. A.
' (Written For The Associated Press)
The new International Contract Bridge Code which became effective In the United Statea, France and Eng
land Nov. I ahould be enthusiastically received. It Is a definite step forward.
Penaltlea for Infringements of the laws have, In general, been considerably ameliorated. Following la an
analysis of new and old rules:
EXAM1NTNO A QUITTED TRICK
NEW LAW A trick may not be ex
amined after it haa once been quit
ted, except to asttle a dispute In
volving ownership of trick. Penalty
Declarer or left band opponent
may call a lead when next It la the
turn of the offending side to lead.
OLD LAW Any player could examine
quitted trick until he or his part
ner had played to the next suc
ceeding trick. There waa no penalty
tat Infringement.
CuM"tENT It always haa been an
noying to have a player look at a
quitted trick. There Is no good rea
son why a player cannot remember
cards as they are played.
THE REVOKE
NEW LAW (a) A player "revoke"
when Be falls to follow suit when
able to do so. However, revoke pen
alty is not assessed until "the re
voke becomes established." The re
voke la established as soon aa the
offender or hla partner leada or
playa to the next trick.
(b) Penalty for established re
voke la two trick for first revoke
and one trick for each succeeding
revoke. Tricks shall be transferred
to the non-revoking aide and scored
sa If that side had actually won
the trlcka in play.
(c) If no trlcka are taken by re
voking aide after revoke has been
committed there shall be no pen
alty. If only one trick is taken then
only one trick ahall be paid to the
non-revoking side. Thus, aasume
that South Is playing a contract of
four hearts, and that the, East-West
pslr win the first four tricks, the
fifth trick being won by Deolarer:
and on that trick West revokes. If
Declarer then wins the remaining
trlcka there will be no penalty for
revoke, aince revoking side failed
to win any trlcka after the revoke.
The Declarer, therefore, haa been
set one trick on hi four heart con
tract. (d) If a player hold a card of a
ult led and falls to play It when
playing to the twelfth trick, that
error must be corrected aa soon as
. It la discovered. In no case will the
(penalty for an established revoke
' be assessed. -
OLD LAW The penalty of two trick
for the first revoke and 100 points
for each succeeding revoke was pre
scribed under the 1020 code of lawa.
- Furthermore, there waa no consld-
eratlon given to the question aa to
when revoke actually took place.
COMMENT It alwaya haa been con
sidered unfair to collect tricks on
a revoke penalty when revoke could
have no possible effect on the play.
The term "renounce" (failure to
follow suit when able to do so) has
been abandoned. Now Instead of a
penalty for a "revoke" and another
for a "renounce", there la one pen
alty for "an established revoke,"
and a different penalty for a "re
voke." CORRECTED REVOKE
NEW LAW If an opponent of De
clarer revoke and hla attention la
called to the Irregularity before re-

Mid-November' gridiron battles
brought about the unuaual eltuatlon
of Southern California' Trojans In
the role of kingpin of far western
football, yet having to share the
Coast conference leadership with a
team that haa euffered one defeat.
The Trojan crushed an invading
University of Oregon eleven, 33-0,
Saturday to chalk up their fifth con
ference victory and become the only
undefeated, untied major team west
of the Rockies. Meanwhile, the Unl
verslty of Cellfornla at Los Angeles

enoe starts, claimed co-leaderahtp of
the big circuit, but their seasonal
record listed one defeat, a 14-7 set
back at the hand of St. Mary's Gaels
