IF you are NOT a newcomer to this little valley of ours don't waste your time reading this. Tou already know this polit ical campaign is ending Just as all other local political cam paigns have ended these many years, with a perfect barrage of mud and slander, libels and falsehoods, for one purpose and one purpose alone to put that hardy political perennial, One Earl Fehl into public office, and satisfy his thwarted ego, Tou don't need to be told these charges are false. Tou do not need to be told they are fundamentally the SAME CHARGES he has made against this newspaper and his rival candidates, since Hector was a pup. Tou know all that. Tou no more expect a campaign in this long-suffering bailiwick to close without this man Fehl, making 11th hour charges, shov ing libellous hand bills under the front door, with the hope that SOMEHOW, SOMEWAT it will at last give him a place in the political limelight, than you expect a spring without flowers, or a winter without frost. To you it's an old story and a tiresome one. Tou pay no more attention to it than you would to t"he wailing of the wind, or the howling of a moon-struck hound. - It's an old story to us, too. And if we weren't in the news paper business and didn't feel a certain responsibility to those newcomers among our 19,000 registered voters, we would pay no. attention to it, either. We would be sensible like Will Rogers suggests close up shop and go fishing. DUT there ARE those newcomers those new voters. And they don't realize these last minute charges, innuendoes and insinuations, are as false as dicers' oaths, if there is no denial, they may conclude MORE 'S THE PITT 1 that there must be something to them. So the last day before election, the Mail Tribune is forced, as it has been forced in practically every local eleotion, for twenty years, to refute these 11th hour charges, to expose the unscrupulous and shameless mendacity of those responsible for them. As usual the MVtil Tribune is accused of being a member of the plunderbund that has bad its hand in the publio treasury all these years, when Fehl ran for Mayor it' was the CITT treasury; now that he is running for county judge it is the COUNTT treasury. Then all the city officials were crooks and grafters ; now all the oounty officials are and have been crooks and grafters. Then the source of graft lay in the CITT print ing.' Now of course it lies in COUNTT printing. Then it was the Reoord Herald, that led the crusade of purity and light, now with the Record Herald, because of a judgment for libel, transferred to the News, the evangel of rectitude and righteous ness is the latter paper. But it's the same old Fehl wheeze on the same old "down with the gang" record. And for the same old purpose, getting Earl a job at the expense of the taxpayers. As was the case nearly 20 years ago, so now, the main beneficiary of this reign of vice, skullduggery and corruption, happens to be the sole competitor of these journals of the uplift, "ol Man Debbil," the Medford Mail Tribune. 1J0W to knock these charges into oblivion, as we have knock- ' ed them so many times before, only to have them bob up like the proverbial nine-lived cat at the next eleotion. During all this time the Mail Tribune has, oampaign after campaign, challenged Mr. Fehl and his various mud-slinging spokesmen to make just one DEFINITE CHARGE of wrong doing, against this newspaper or any of his competing candi dates, just ONE and bring that charge before any regular or any special grand jury, under the regular District Attorney, or under any special district attorney appointed by the Gover nor, but ONLT ONCE during all these years has the Fehl crowd accepted that challenge , Then it was only accepted be cause circumstances made it impossible to escape. That was only a few months ago May, 1932. Unfortunately grand jury proceedings are secret and can't be made publio, but this can be said, and neither Mr. Fehl nor any of his apologists dare deny it. , . A FTER a thorough investigation, that grand jury wag unable to find 'the slightest evidence to support any of these criminal charges, no charges against this newspaper were even presented the grand jury repudiated Fehl and his newspaper, and every mudslinger in the primary campaign, just aa, if it were called NOW it would repudiate every one concerned in. the filthy character assassination and personal abuse that has gone on in THIS CAMPAIGN. 117HAT did the Fehl forces dot Accept that ' verdict, as law abiding and right thinking citizens should. NOT AT ALL! They turned their vials of hatred, calumny and abuse upon the members of that grand jury, branded them either as crooks, false to their oath, or spineless tools of a dishonest and corrupt District Attorney, and then, as soon as the eleotion campaign started, and mud slinging again served their pur poses, REPEATED THOSE SAME CONTEMPTIBLE AND BASELESS CHARGES, in a renewed effort to becloud the issues and get votes. CO there you are, Mr. Newcomer. And there are the eharges. It must be as plain to you, as it is to everyone who has listened to the samo charges these many years, that if these charges WERE true, if they had any basis WHATEVER in fact, in all this time, they would have been presented before MORE than one grand jury, and SOME GRAND JURT would have returned indictments and those guilty of these crimes as charged would have been found guilty and would have been punished. It must also be plain, that those charges have NOT been presented In the rroper way, have NOT been tested for their truth or falsity by those presenting them, for one reason and ONE REASON ALONE i BECAUSE THOSE MAKING THEM KNOW THET ARE FALSE, KNOW THET ARE MERELT MOLASSES TO CATCH FLIES, KNOW THAT IF CALLED FOR A SHOWDOWN, THET WOULD BE REPUDIATED AND THROWN OUT OF COURT, AS THET WERE IN THE ONE INSTANCE CITED, AND THEIR EFFORTS TO GAIN TUBLIC OFFICE IN THIS CONTEMPTIBLE, UNDERHANDED FASHION, WOULD BE ENDED FOR ALL TIME. CO much for thse charges. Now one wovd more. If you like this sort of tiling, if you want it continued, if you believe it is good for this community and the people in it, for your business and theirs, don't let us keep you from voting for these three musketeers or "Must get theirs," as they seem to prefer Messrs. Febl, Wilkins and ZundeL t They are united under one paramount issue alone, the recall of Judge H. D. Norton. A vote for them or any one of them, means an endorsement of this mud slinging, a public demand for this recall which will have to be held at a special election, at added expense to the taxpayers, and will keep this com munity disrupted and embroiled for an indefniite period in the future. DUT IF TOU DON'T LIKE IT, if you are sick of it, sick of the whole political snake dance if you want to end it as far as possible for all time, then don't vote for them, and CONCENTRATE UPON THE CANDIDATES BEST QUALI FIED TO DEFEAT THEM. . If you don't wish to give over the management of Jackson County to Earl Fehl for six years, don't wish to have him, pre side over the juvenile court and act as moral guide for your boys and girls; if you don't wish him to decide the fate of your estate, as probate judge when you depart: If you Don't wish M. 0. Wilkins to handle the legal affairs of this' county, under "Judge" Fehl; or Zundel to be responsible for the collection of taxes tnd the enforcement of law, under the same authority, then vote this triumvirate down, bury it so deep it can never be resurrected again, by voting AGAINST THEM. - TTHAT'S ALL. The campaign is over. We can do no more. Candidates can do no more. The radio thank the Lord can do no more. The decision is up to you and you and you and you ALONE. Tomorrow as you enter the voting booth, TOU are supreme, TOU hold the destiny of this community and the country in your hands. Vote for what you wanf, vote for what you believe in, and don't forget: . Tou will get in this election as in every other, JUST WHAT TOU VOTE FORI Keep Mose Alford on the Job A FRIEND of Mose Alford, City Recorder, asks why we have not endorsed him, and reminds us -that his defeat, under present conditions, might mean a public and personal tragedy. ... We frankly admit we didn't suppose a publio endorsement was necessary. Mr. Alford has held this position so long, through bo many administrations given such capable and con scientious service, is so familiar with all the intricacies of that office, that we took his election for granted. Perhaps we were too sanguine. If so we regret it very much. But all we can do at this late date is to give him this paper's hearty endorsement, and for the reasons above stated, urge our readers to giv,e him the support he so thoroughly deserves. We have never urged support of a publio official on the plea of sympathy, that he needs the job. That is true in the case of Mr. Alford, but it is not our reason for supporting him. We urge his re-election because the job, and the city of Medford need him. , . Vote for the Fish Bill v i TTHE Rogue River Fish Bill should get a vote in Jackson . county, unanimously IN ITS FAVOR . , Its passage has been endorsed by the highest and most impartial- fish authority in the country, Henry O'Malley, U. S. Commissioner of the bureau of fisheries. . Even the Gold Beach chamber of commerce, which bitterly opposed the measure in the past, favors the bill because it has found game fishing is more profitable to that community than commercial fishing. ' ' . The bill's passage will bring thousands of tourists to South ern Oregon and keep scores of country homes on the river, which might be closed, if the bill fails. ( The amount of labor eliminated by the bill's passage would not equal by a thousand percent the amount of labor eliminated by its FAILURE in the way of new river building, guides, etc, etc., etc. all cash customers for Southern Oregon. So vote 306 TES, and get everyone you know to do likewise. Communications Dairy Meeting Called. To the Editor: The Rogue River Valley Dairy as sociation voices Its sppesl to all dairy men, farmers or any who ever Intend to seU a pound of butter urging them to attend the Dairy association regu lar monthly meeting to be held at the court house, Medford, Ore., on Wed nesday evening, November 9 at 8 p. m. Now Bro. Dairyman, Fanner and Qranger and all who have helped to sponsor or Indorsed the oleomargar ine referendum measure Stop and take a look at our photo graph In almost every leading dally newspaper that Is printed In the state of Oregon, sponsored by the eo-called Oregon Anti-Food Tax league, and Mrs. Alexander Thompson as Its presi dent, accusing us and picturing us as one of the leading gangsters of the country. Now Bro. Dairymen, Fanner and Oranger If you have the backbone of a Jelly flan or a spark of honesty left In your system, you will be at the Dairy association meeting to voice your protest against one of the most vicious pieces of propaganda ever sponsored against an honest, hard working class of dtleena and against one of the leading Industries In the stste of Oregon. We also request every publishing company that carries this advertise ment of propaganda to hare a re porter at this meeting, for they will get an ear full. These reporters will be asked to explain why ( their com panies are helping to sponsor a cam paign of misleading propaganda to sell out one of the most honorable leading Industries In the state of Ore gon or the world over. Just because a rich tropical oil corporation has far more money than the poor honest hard-working dairy farmer. We can not see how any one can stoop so low aa to feed the cttlsens of the state of Oregon on a vicious piece of propaganda In the form that Mrs. Thompson's organlratlon haa spon sored. All dairy farmer! that an buying this oleo as a butter substitute are especially Invited. Remember the above date and be at this meeting. W. N. (BlUlel Csrl. Chairman. Slogan: FARMER BILL, from the Wilds of the APPLEGATE Country. W. N. CARL Nullification Isnt Repeal. To the Editor: Some of the more or less radical wets are contending that the repeal of the state prohibition law by our ballots will not make It necessary for fthts state to have an election follow ing a proposal of congress for the state to ratify or repeal the 18th amendment. They state for their ex ample that California and Nevada voters, by leaving prohibition In ef fect but paralyzing enforcement by the withdrawal of enforcement by state, county and local officers, will be conaldered a wet state thereby making It unnecessary for them to act on the proposal of congress as It has already been established that these two states are for repeal. They also declare that It Oregon at this 'election repeale the state prohibition law by a good majority vote, this will strongly Influence our congress men to vote on the wet side and (hasten the arrival of the day for re Ipeal of this 18th amendment. j H It not true that "referenduma I without constitutional sanction can inot furnish a decisive answer" and I that congress Is given power to de I (ermine the mode of ratification? Surely an election held tomorrow will ! not determine Oregon as a wet or jdry atate when congress asks, ssy a j year or two later, for the mandate I of this state aa to retention oi re , peal of the 16th amendment. la It not absurd and ridiculous for voters, j unless stubborn, not to change their j opinion on an Issue after being en ; lightened? This leads them to chsnge . their votes at the next election If given the opportunity. The writer I would appreciate your enlightening them, through the columns of your paper, before election day. A. JUST ONE OB TWO DRINKS Every little while we hear of some culprit pleading that he or she til not Intoxicated hut merely had taken o n e or t w o Drinks. Jut where our com ical Amer lean J urlspr udence draws the line between sobriety and Intoxication la a mystery. Sci entifically, It has been proved that "Just one or two little drinks" of alcoholic bever age or liquor will slow anybody's re action time down two or three -fifths of a second, and If the Intent of the law Is to give Justice to all, the drinker should be held strictly re sponsible for the accidents which may occur due to this failure on his or her part to take reasonable pre caution for safety. The effect of the alcohol In one or two little drinks Is quite definite. The pulse rate or heart beat In creases several beata to the minute, but this Is not "stimulation," as was formerly supposed. The arterial pres sure Is Invariably lowered and the fast pulse Is a weaker pulse. The Individual has a sensation of greater warmth or of flushing of the skin. But this Is not stimulation either; It Is merely the effect of relaxation or dilation of the arterioles of the surface, which permits the warm blood from the votal organs and the Internal circulation to rush to the surface and to remain there too long. The Internal body temperature Is In variably lowered. It. is for this' season that Arctic explorers and others who must endure extreme cold avoid al cohol In any form. If a drink or two "warms you up" It does so at the expense of your vital body heat which la dissipated by the surface stagnation. , . v Boozers who boast they can take It or let It alone commonly Argue that a good drink gives a person a sense of well being and greater rtrength. But put the person In a race or in any sort of contest or test of strength or endurance and this sense of well being and refreshment proves to be merely the dulling effect of the narcotic on the higher cereb ral perception of fatigue. Everybody knows that a drunken person Is weak and Incompetent In every respect though he generally feels and believes he Is stronger and more capable. The same thing applies, though more subtly, to the state of the man or tlonal provisions by repealing en abling or enforcing statutes does NOT alter the force and validity of those constitutional amendments, in any way, shape or manner. Keep Ralph Jennings. To the Editor: " , I wish to make a last-minute plea for Mr. Ralph Jennings. Mr. Jennings is a man; that even those that are against putting him back can't point out a single flaw In the administering of his publio duties. They admit that he has been a good sheriff, and that he has performed the duties of his office perfectly. If this true, then why not put him beck. Why not keep a good man on the Job? People advance the flimsy argu ment, that Mr. Jennings haa had the Job long enough. That Is all the more reason why we should keep him there. Any one. knows that the longer a man does a certain Job the better he gets. A successful business concern doesn't fire a good man Just to give some one else a Job. Another argument which shows more Jealousy than anything else. Is In regard to Mr. Jennings employ ing members of his fsmlly. To my mind (and I'm euro to every fair minded person) that la perfectly all right. Any one would do the same thing. I would do It. You would do it. Now last, but not leist. the ex tremely false charges brought against Mr. Jennings In regard to his trying to get back Into office when he was defeated in the primaries. Mr. Jen nings hss never opened his mouth to any one, ao far as I can learn, about writing his name In on the ballot. That movement was etsrted entirely by the people, the voters of Jsckson county. Put him back. You wont regret It. Thla Is no time for a change. ELROY W. ANDERSON, 433 Benson Street. November 7. Oleo Tax Condemned. To the Editor: About the oleo tax bill. The people who are now buying oleomargsrlns are those who slmp'iy cannot afford to buy butter, and If this bill pssses and puta oleo out of their reach they will not be able to buy anything In that line. Consequently the dairymen will not be able to sell one pound more butter than they did before. I am sure everyone would rather have butter and all would buy It If they could, but when they cannot. Dllle Oo.) people buy butter when they havent enough money to buy It? I am not against the dairymen and farmers, they have plenty of troubles, but surely anyoneJcan see that this bill won't help them any. One correspondent In your commu nications column states that If every one who now buys oleo would buy butter Instead, It would go a long way towards solving unemployment. I wonder If he thinks people buy oleo because .they like It. Perhaps he has plenty; Is able to buy all the butter he wants, and can't realize the predicament some people are In. I don't believe the dairymen pay all the tax on butter. The consumer pays most of It. And I don't believe putting a tax on oleo would lower the dairy taxes any. It would Just mean that the consumers would have to pay the oleo tax (as that is the way ttaxea like that are paid by the consumer, not the producer). And since the oleo consumers would not be able to pay It, they would have to go without oleo as well as butter, and Oregon would not get any more taxes after all, nor would the dairy men be able to sell any more butter. Jenkins' Comment (Continued from Page One ) Putting It another way, Idaho and Oregon abll more butter to California than any other states, but Idaho sells THREE TIMES as much as Ore gon. WHY is this? Why can't Oregon sell as much butter to Cali fornia as Idaho sells? We have told ourselves for years that Oregon Is a great dairy state, and Oregon Is near er the California market than Idaho. So why does Idaho put it all over us when It comes to selling her but ter to California? npHESE are questions that are lm- portant to our welfare, and the answer to them is absurdly simple: The California market demands high quality butter 92 score or bet ter, on the average. Idaho produces the high quality butter that Cali fornia demands. Oregon DOESN'T. That is the whole story. QOUTHEBN OREGON Is potentially the greatest dairy section of this state, because down here we can pro duce cheap dairy feeds; notably al falfa. Southern Oregon Is also NEAR- EST to the California market. If Southern Oregon will learn the lesson of QUALITY, and will pro duce the kind of butter the Califor nia market demands, she can find In California a profitable market for all the butter she can produce.
