CHICKEN FOOD BY
SCIENCE IViiRACLE
CINCINNATI, Nov. 1. (AP) Ttie
glue long made by the American tan
ning industry wtli t glue no longer,
but a new kind of chicken feed, rich
In proteins, tt was announced today
at the university of Cincinnati.
Chickens fed with this ration, n
was further announced, have been
pronounced specially tender and also
rapid growers.
This miracle of scientific research
Is not conversion of glue Into food,
but diversion. The scraps of hides
and skins from which glue has been
made, are diverted Into a new chemi
cal process which refines them up
the scale into edibility. Instead of
downward into an adhesive.
In this upward revision the 14
glue smell is said to be lost entirely.
The diversion was worked out to
meet a slump In the glue market,
which the announcement says was ft
serious matter U soma tanners whose
profits depended largely upon disposal
of the millions of tons annually of
scrap hides and skins.
It was done for the Tanners' Coun
cil of America, which supports a sci
entific laboratory In the University
of Cincinnati leather research des
partment under direction of Dr. Fred
O'Flnherty.
The new feed la concentrated. In
addition to the I.lRh protein content,
it is believed to carry a good quantity
of vitamin D, which prevents the
bone-softening rickets to which
chickens are subject.
Experimental feeding. Dr. Wood
ward said, shows that poultry re
sponds best to a standard grain diet
to which only five per cent of ths
new feed Is added. Chickens fed on
thla percentage gained 60 par cent
weight in three weeks.
