Br TOM O'NEIL
WEW TOHK, Oct. 31 (AP) Pen-
sjtiea for being set are changed un
der a new oode of rulea for the game
of contract effective tomorrow.
Non Tulnerable undertrlcka will cost
about ten per cent more and all cate
gories of vulnerable undertrlcka about
ten per cent less. The old method jf
scoring undoubted not Tulnerable un
dertrlcks Is retained. .
There are five major changes In
scoring and many changes In penal
ties for infringement of the rules un
der a code promulgated today by the
Whist club of New York, the Portland
olub of London, and the Commission
Franoalae du bridge. A committee of
representatives of American bridge
organizations Indorsed the changes.
. but If the comments of some of them
are any Indication, moves to have a
representative American body make
future changes will be Intensified.
Changes Listed
Here are tho scoring changes:
TTndertrlcks 60 points ponalty per
trick not doubled and not vulnerable;
doubled and not vulnerable, 100 for
the first undertrlck, and an Increase
of 50 for each successive undertrlck;
vulnerable snd undoubted, . same as
doubled and not vulnerable: vulner
able and double, twice the vulnerable
' undoubled.
140 trump valuation Three no
- trump equals five diamonds or five
clubs. This Is brought about by valuing-
the odd-numbered no trump
tricks over book at 30 each and the
even-numbered tricks at 40 each.
Grand slams 1500 not vulnerable
and 3,250 vulnerable. Little slam pre
miums remain 500 and 750.
Overtrlcks If one Is not doubled
and makes more tricks than contract
ed for the premium la the number of
overtrlcks multiplied by the suit val
ue. That Is If one contracted for three
spades and made five, 60 would be
scored above the line Instead of the
100 under the old system. Tho old
premiums for doubled and redoubled
overtrlcks are retained.
Premium Abolished
Premiums for erectly fulfilling doub
led or redoubled contracts these are
abolished. The old rules provide 50
points premium for fulfilling a doub
led not vulnerable contract, 100 for
doubled vulnerable contract, and 100
and 300 for redoubled contracts.
The new scoring for doubled and
redoubled undertrlcka Is going to
cause the most difficulty for players
to learn. Bald Ely Culbertson: "Many
players will object that It Is too dif
ficult to remember and oomDute.
feel sorry for the hundreds of thou
sands of women who with the ld
scoring got along pretty well with the
oouro on ten fingers and who now
with the new scoring will have to
take off their shoes to count on their
toes as well."
Herewith la a formula for reason
ably easy computation of the total
penalty for any number of doubled
not vulnerable undortrlcks. Take
and keep adding successive figures
unttl one past the number of tricks
se. Multiply the total by 60. The re
'suit Is the total penalty.

melsters will play University high of
Eugene, on Van ecoyoc field.
Coach Burgher will start preparing
for the Eugene high game thU after
noon. The Lane county squad Is com'
posed of big youths, who are no't
spectacular, but possessed of power.
Klamath Gloomy
The Klamath Falls team who start
ed shouting state championship
claims before the season opened, went
home disappointed. According to Joe
Flgney, sports writer of the Klamath
Falls Herald, it will be three years
before the Pelicans recover, and Mr.
Plgney feels bad about It himself,
Says he:
"A year will go by, another and
still another, and then the sick-sore
ness of defeat will be shaded and for
gotten by the rise of other fine Peli
can, football teams.
"A season of ambition, a season of
concentration pointing toward the
one "great" game of the schedule was
washed away in tears actually tears,
for more than one Klamath boy and
girl left Van Scoyoc field sobbing
as the Medford Tigers, but once de
feated by a Pelican team, plunged
passed and kicked Its way to three
touchdowns and three conversions in
a 31 to 0 victory this afternoon."
Youth forgets .Its sorrows fast, and
despite the gloomy Plgney predic
tions, the Klamath lads will be out
of their misery In about three days.
Tigers Tricky
The Burghermelsters won because
tney played better, and tnougnt rast
er than the Pelicans. When Klamath
was set for a line plunge, -the locals
passed, and when they were prepared
for pass they plunged. This was made
possible by the headwork of Quarter
back Red Scheel, acting under orders
from his coach. There were no stars
In the Medford squad they were
machine. They went about the Job of
crushing Klamath Falls methodical
ly, and a stonewall line, worked to
perfection for a fast back field.
For some reason the Pelicans had
a special grudge against Glem of
Medford. Norman Taber boasted he
would smash through the stocky
tackle for gains, when needed. Glem
was told about It before the game,
and Mr; Taber was flopped for losses
all afternoon.

Driver Is Human

VOTE 314 X YES!
FREIGHT TRUCK AND BUS BILL
MOTOR transportation companies, now inadequately -regulated,
require their drivers to make long, haz
ardous trips without rest and at a deplorably low wage.
This practice is unjust and highly dangerous. Tired men
make mistakes easily: Investigation of recent major
truck accidents develops that the drivers had been on
duty excessively long hours.
The Freight Truck and Bus Bill will stop this selfish and
dangerous labor-exploiting practice by giving the driver
decent working hours through reasonable and just regu
' lations. It will make it possible for the driver to sleep at
home instead of behind the wheel of a fast-moving truck.
It will give him hours at home with his family, every
man's just heritage. It will make the highways safer for
you and your family. It points the way to a lower pass
enger car license. It will NOT put 27,000 men out of em
ployment; it will increase employment by eliminating
the trailer and employing two men to do two men's work.
Vote 314 X Yes-Freight Truck and Bus Bill
It will REGULATE (Not Eliminate) commercial trucks and buse.
No community will be deprived of adequate bus and truck service.

SUCCESSFUL PSYCHIC
By Tom O'NeU
A bid of two or three no trump
when a hand contains a long minor
suit wun tops and little else, is
garded, under some conditions, by
many players as the best of psychics
or semi -psychics. It Is Incorporated
as a principle of some bidding systems.
Often tt deters a vulnerable side
from entering an easy game contract
or Indeed bidding at all. Ths pen
alty to the non -vulnerable side Is
relatively slight at times and there
have been psychics of this kind which
have produced game.
At double dummy play probably
any such psychic would be penalized,
heavily, but the adversaries are likely
to make an original lead favorable to
the declarer, and the first lead tells
the story.
The bid usually Is made third hand
when the non-vulnerable dealer has
passedo As such, It Is a new Culbert
sonlan wrinkle. 8ome players regard
Mrs. Dorothy Sims as the real In
ventor. She devised It as a method
of scaring a vulnerable side which
had opened the auction with a game,
demand bid. "Barricade psychic' the
termed it.
In one variation the no trump Is
offered after the enemy has bid a
suit snd when there Is one sure stop
per of that suit In the no trump bid
der's hand. In this case there Is
game for the declsrer If the first
leader opens the suit bid. The de
fense Is to open another suit.
At rubber bridge the bid has been
found quite successful by Edwin A.
Moree of New York. Here is a hand
In which he won game at no trump
without a stopper In three suits:
West tried at once to set up the
spade suit. Moree, lucky to find a
spade stopper In dummy, took sine
tricks,, making game. A lead of a
diamond or a heart by west could
have caused Moree to be well set.
West and east could have made game
with ease In spades, hearts or dia
monds. The moral would seem to be
that against a dubious no trump bid
It might be well to open some other
suit than the one which ordinarily
would be the best.
When doubled on such a no trump
bid as Moree'. some plsyers are ln
clfed to bid the long minor. Moree
has found it averages better to let
the no trump double stand.
