Hall will leave in the morning for

of Mr. Hall's sister, Pearl Hall. He
plans to go deer and duck hunting

automobile driven by Dan W. Herring
was struck yesterday by an automo
bile driven by W. F. Carper of Port
land, a report filed at the cVty police
station shows. Carper struck: the
Herring car as he pulled from the
curb.
New Manager Rex H. Burgoyiw
haa arrived from nene and taken
personal charge of the Rex cafe. Mr.
Burgoyne was one of the owners of
the Rex and is well known to many
Medford people, although he did not
reatde here but owned and operated
one of the leading cafes in Eugene.

Aocident Reported An aocident
near Gold Hill was reported late yes
terday by the state police, when a
Ford sedan crashed Into the back
end of a school bus, driven by C. H.
Routh. There were 38 children in
the bus, which hwl stopped to let
one off. Mrs. Wynn Adams, driver
of the small car, tried to pass the
bus, but was unable to as another
car was coming from the opposite
direction. She suffered a gash In the
head from the Impact.
Bad Checks Out Two worthless
checks were yesterday turned over to
the city police by local business
houses. One for $8.50, made out to
cash and signed by Clara Davis, was
cashed by Wurts Gifts, and another
for (13, made out to Ethel Peterson
by Frank Glbbs, was turned over bo
authority by Pick: & Lindley. The
check for $8.50 was drawn on the
First Savings bank of Albany, and
the 13 check on the First National
bank of this city.

to Medford yesterday from Seattle,
where he has been on official busi
ness for the past week.
Legion to Meet A big meeting of
Medford Post No. 16 of the Amer
ican Legion Is scheduled for Monday
night at the Armory. A special pro
gram of entertainment will be pro
vided, by Lew Oorbett, chairman of
the entertainment committee, and a
number of interesting matters will
be discussed during the business ses
sion. This will be the first meeting
to be held under the direction of
the newly elected officers and a large
attendance la anticipated.

A W, Pipes former Medford mayor
and slnglehanded candidate for coun
ty Judge opened his county wide
speaking campaign at Rogue River
Community hall last night.
Mr. Pipes, devoted his remarks
largely to denying tfie charge brought
by W. E. Phlpps' "County Judge Ex
tra" that there was anything irregu
lar In the piping of city water to the
Pipes ranch, en route to the Medford
air field. The item declared "If In
order to reach the airport. Pipes
piped Medford's million dollar water
a mile and a half further around to
reach his own ranch, how far around
would he go to pipe ditch and drain
Jackson County?"
The speaker maintained the pip
ing of the water was not done at his
direction but by the city, and that
the shortest and most economical
route for the water pipe was adopt
ed. According to reports Mr. Pipes
made a good impression on his hear
ers for sincerity and earnestness.

A larger attendance, greater atten
tion to campaign details, and in
creased enthusiasm characterized the
second meeting of the Jackson Coun
ly Civic league held last night at
the Y, W. C. A. residence on North
Bartlett street. Col. W. H. Paine,
chairman at large, presided, In the
absence of Walter Leveret te, presi
dent, who was out of town. The
constitution, drawn up and present
ed at the Initial meeting, was form
ally adopted.
In answer to numerous Inquiries
relative to membership in the league,
officers wish to state that those eli
gible consist of three members of
county churches or other organisa
tions in sympathy with the move
ment. Ashland churches were last
night reported as standing 100 per
cent for the present Oregon stats
law regarding prohibition and for
the 18th amendment, the churches
represented being First Christian,
First Methodist. First Presbyterian,
First Church of Christ, Scientist,
First Baptist, Nazarene, Free Meth
odist, Four SqUare Gospel, Seventh
Day Adventlst, Church of the Breth
ren, Congregational. Representatives
from the W. C. T. U. of Ashland
w ra also In attendance, including
Mrs. Grace Andrews, Ashland news
paper woman, who will attend to
publicity for that unit.
Literature, stickers, and many oth
er forms of publicity and advertis
ing will be used extensively by the
league In spreading prohibition edu
cation and offsetting false propa
ganda, lt was stated. Transporatlon
for voters will be arranged and the
plan for talks in churches and
schools by "minute men," so suc
cessfully carried out last Sunday,
will be continued and extended over
a larger territory.
Among the more Important an
nouncements made at the meeting
was that concerning the Oregon
State Grange, which was declared to
be heartily In accord with the alms
of the league. Members were also
gratified that Dr. Daniel Poling of
the Allied Forces for Prohibition
would be in Medford November 1
for .a public address. Plans were
also considered for the giving of a
chalk talk and address by Rev. E. G.
Masters of Grants Pass.
The next meeting will be held
Tuesday evening, October 2, same
hour and place.

SCOUTDOM PLAN
At a meeting held jointly Tuesday
evening the executive boards of the
Olrl Scouts and Boy Scouts approved
a plan for an allied drive. Hamilton
Patton will be the head of the cam
pslgn orgnnlratlon which is now be
ing formed.
Boy Scout organizations have pre
pared small operating budgets to
lower the cost to the community.
A total of 94.000 will be necessary
for next year's work. By unlttng for
this campaign the citizens will be
called on but once for this purpose.
