THE DON'T CARE GIRL
j LIVE had made
I clsely what ho
was going to tell
her depended on
bis reception. If
she drove him to
extremities, be
would propose.
But to become
engaged before
hta prospects
were brighter didn't strike blm as
honest. That she was rich was bis
misfortune. Besides, she was
young: be himself was only four
years her senior.
Some ot this be had tried to write,
but bad torn up the letters. Letters
said too much. Practically what bis
had said was. "1 adore you and
don't approve ot you." Not to ap
prove ot anyone Implied distrust.
All of this would be changed when
he was certain she belonged to
blm.
That afternoon he bad token the
first step by phontng her.
"That you, Santa? Are you tree
this evening?"
"Sorry. I wish you'd called
looner."
"But hare thla If ' - Thing
that can't wait."
A gay laugh.
" 'Fran It'll bay to."
"But sea here," his tone bad
ceased to 'be casual. "It I don't say
It now, I may never."
"Then say It"
"Can't across the wire."
A pauso.
"You wore with me till midnight.
Why didn't you say It then?"
"I know. But I've been thinking.
I'ra reached a sort of crisis. Don't
hacg up. This date you've mado
can't you shelve it?"
A longer pause.
."I might Tell yon what be at
my bouse by eight-thirty. It I'm not
at home, wait tor me."
"But you will be?"
"Listen." Her voice bad caressod
him. "That's a kiss. It's (or you."
Had any other girl done tbat It
would bava meant a lot When
Santa did It, It only meant that she
was amiable.
Her name was all wrong. Tbat

The endearment bad been made
permanent by baptism. The family
name of Dawn had been sufficiently
fantastic. When Santa was added,
a flavor of quite unnecessary ro

In a worried mood Cllve set out
to keep tbe appointment. It was
an April evening blue sky, white

and placed cigarettes at his elbow.
Cltve'a feeling that be was an in

of the ho.v.e rebuked blta. Why had

how many suitors' humiliation this

miss bis Interview with Santa.
"Don't worry about me," be af-

Mr. Dawn turned away.
