Once upon a time there was candidate. He ran lor office, which was the nearest he came to doing any work In 17 years. Due to the unholy maglo of the Oregon System, he re ceived the nomination, to the great surprise of himself and everybody else. Bo he poked out his chest and stepped high, and made loud noises on the street corners. Then cameth the straw ballot. Knowing well his own deficiencies and fallings, ha scurried over the countryside, bleat ing: "The straw ballot la false, a fake, and Is against me, for mine enemies will stuff the same." In due time the ballots were count ed, and lol the unbel fever, and the howler of skullduggery fed all the rest, so, the Straw Ballots were Okay and Jake, all things good, and very fine, even though the scoffer had been hoisted on his own petard, If any. So, Little Ones, you see, It makes a difference who gets the Straw Ballots, as Incompetents are always peevish as the showdown ap proaches. Most Straw Ballots concern men only, but the one that la about to hit deals with Issues. Issues of which we have an unending supply are more Important than men. The Issues, and votes received by each, are as follows: Law and disorder . ...2 County Foundation Shaking..a Robbing the Farmer .........2 Robbing Anybody Else .....0 Victim of Injustice 1 Affidavits of Hollnes8...MMWHK...2 Polecat In Politics , , ...2 Purifiers of Same 2 Sympathy Racketeering ,......2 Defending Truth with Lies...... 2 Birds of a Feather ....... 8 Incorrectly Feathered T Local John the Baptist.. Local Napoleon ,..., ,,,,,,1 Outstanding Martyrs . Minor Martyrs , ...2 .7 Writing to Governor... ...0 Opposed to Road Work........l They clean up their own mess. Just estranged not divorced. Formerly a popular Indoor sport, but the govornor answered one emphatically. When workers work without pay soothe them by providing more work without pay. It will be noted In the above tabu lation, thr- there are no figures on Relief. Painful, but true, there is no relief from Bull. A defeat only makes political egotists start running far another defeat, before the votes are eounted. A measure on a separate straw bal lot, providing for Deloiutlng of the Valley From Hooey carried over whelmingly. AU but two of the reg istered voters of the county favored Immediate de -lousing. The vote on President Hoover was: He is Pro-Britlsh. 1 For Impeachment t 1 For Lynching Him 1 This vote indicates a nation-wide sentiment In fnvor of the claim that the chief executive is of low mental ity, and a criminal at heart. The foregoing survey has tripped lighting over the mistakes of the Intelligent voters, who last spring ousted an able official, and caused moonshiners to rejoice, and merrily elap each other with the mash atlrrlng paddles. The re&ret now ex pressed don't count. Juveniles have started riding wheels down the Main Stem. Some were on their way to the dentist to get their teeth and t emails examined. IIOltROHS OF MVS1C The composer uses Cuban rhythmic idioms and his thematic material is en Id to be both Cuban and Qersh wlnlan. There la a lively Introduc tion, featuring typical rhythmic and melodic figures, which leads to the ohlif theme, soetenuto. A three -part oontraptuntal episode Is a feature of the Introduction. A oadenr for solo clarinet leads to the middle section a canon with polytonal accompaniment of low brasses. An ostinuto on the theme of the canon concludes this section. The finale develops the preceding material In the manner of a at ret to, leading to a culminating repetition of the main theme, which is I n t errup t ed by a tuttl of the pulsatile Instruments. An ascending arpegKio ends the work. (New York Telegram.) VALE Reclamation bureau to start Its survey of Brogan-Brunt river projects shortly. LAFAYETTE- Cur It on & Coast railway considering plans to extend line from Carlton to this place. 1 1 VkMH For ExRepublicans Only TJERE and everywhere else some Republicans plans to desert their party on November 8th, and vote for the democratic candidate for president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This is written principally for them. Our advice is look before you leap. Tour dissatisfaction is natural; your resentment is perfectly understandable, the pro duct of these two sentiments is a blind passion for a change. But it is always wise to analyze any situation, look FOR WARD, as well as backward, before committing oneself to any drastic action, particularly where that action is the result of temper, and an unreasoning spirit of revolt. You don't want to kick your own party out of power, put the opposing party in power, and then for four long years, WHEN IT IS TOO LATE, kick yourself around the block, for having done sol OF COURSE YOU DON'Tl You want a change from bad times to good times. So do we, so does everyone else. But you don't want a change from bad times, to times that are even WORSE, and yet in the opinion of the present writer, and in the opinion of many men far wiser, this is preoisely what repudiating President Hoover, and replacing him with Franklin Roosevelt, AT THIS TIME, would mean. THEREFORE wouldn't it be wise to carefully analyze the reasons for such an opinion, be convinced they are not sound, BEFORE you carry out your intention of changing pilots of the ahip of state, at this critical timet What are those reasons 1 Well, looking backward, what were the two main causes of this depression! Experts disagree on the details, but there is no disagreement on the two main causse. THEY WERE, AND ARE, FEAR AND LACK OF CONFIDENCE. Anything that will decrease these two emotions, will make conditions better; anything that will INCREASE them, will make conditions J just figure out for yourself, what the result will be, if out of office, three weeks hence, and Roosevelt and the demo cratic party is put in. . That action will mean not only repudiation of President Hoover, and his party, but it will mean repudiation of the machinery he has set up, to pull his country out of the ruck and return the United States to more normal, economic and industrial conditions. We don't believe anyone denies, that thanks to what President Hoover has done, his establishment of the reconstruction finance corporation, his aid to farmers and home ownors, his measures of federal unemployment relief, the low point of the depression was reached last July, and since then conditions have been slowly but surely improving. BUT WHAT WILL PRESIDENT HOOVER'S DEFEAT MEANt It will mean the people of this country approve neither of him, nor of his program of reconstruction, that they want the democratic party, under the leadership of the governor of New York state, to try its hand. OUT President Hoover will still be in the White House. And " the same congress that aided him in erecting this machin ery of reconstruction and rehabilitation, will be in session. Not only that, they will be in eontrol ef the government, until March 4, 3932, for four long months, what promises to be the most critical poriod in this country's economic history. Whnt will be the resultt There can only be one.-rCOM-PLETE CHAOS AND CONFUSION. It will not be a case of replacing an old and tried pilot, with a new and inexperienced one, in the midst of a terrific storm ; it will be a case of loaving the Bhip of state, without any pilot, while the winds sweep the rudderless craft, nearer and nearer the rocks of destruction. True, President Hoover will do his best to prevent disaster. But what CAN an executive do in a democracy, when the people have deserted him, and the machinery he has constructed has been taken away from him. Try as he will, he can do little more than tread water, and wait for the time when his victori ous rival replaces him. TTHERE is another point. What will the American people be doing during this period from November 9th, 1932 to March 4, 1933, if President Hoover is defeated! Isn't it CER TAIN that they will be doing nothing but tread water also, wniting for the 4th of March! WHAT ELSE oan they do! And when that time comes, what then! Will President Roosevelt scrap the Republican policies he has condemned and the machinery of reconstruction with it! We don't know. We don't believe anyone else knows. Will he lower the tariff as his party demands, and throw the country into another period of destructive readjustment, or will he keep the tariff where it is! Will he be for the billion dollar cash bonus to war veterans or will he be against it! What will he do! We don't know. No one knows. We fail to find anything in his speeches Governor Roosevelt knows HIMSELF. MOW, Mr. Republican and Mrs. Republican also, isn't that a fair representation of the situation now confronting this country! If it is, then what do you think such , situation will do to those two fundamental causes of hard times, fear of the future, lack of confidence, in the present. Will the election of Roosevelt decrease that fear, or IN CREASE it; will it restore public confidence, or will it DESTROY puhlio confidence! Will it make your chance of getting work better or worse; make your business prospects better or worse, be to your .own self interest, regardless of politics, or be AGAINST YOUR OWN SELF INTEREST. , JUST figure it out for yourself. On one hand President Hoover whose policies are known, whose election will mean no break for. four months, in the application of those policies, no doubt as to what will be done in the future. Franklin Roosevelt, on the other hand, whose policies are unknown, whose abilities for such a tssk as the presidency im poses, are untried and whose election would mean four months of complete inaction, and a period of fear and doubt, which, no matter what he does or tries to do, CAN'T BE AVOIDED. William Brad; In care of rhe MaU Tribune. THE POISONING IB MENTAL. .Webster tells us a quack la an Ig norant practitioner; one who pro fesses skill or knowledge In any mat ter of which he knows little or noth ing. . Two things are essential for suc cess In quacking It. First, the pre tender or faker must employ means of attract ing victims. Sec ond, he must have an Imposing personality. A physician or healer who Is good can and does depend on the good will of his satisfied patrons to keep him busy. That's how practice Is built. If he la not so good he must resort to other means of attracting patrons I he must either boldly blow his own horn up snd down the by-ways or secretly em ploy some one else to do for him what the satisfied patients of a reBl phy sician voluntarily do for the doctor who has earned their good will. There Is a queer quirk In human nature that prompta the trimmed sucker to keep silent about his ex perience while he gets a certain mean satisfaction out of watching other suckers bite on the same bait which lured him. People play this role even when their good friends are In danger of belns victimized by .the same ho-cus-pocuB. Sometimes It Is not en tirely meanness that prompts such silence where a fair warning should be given, but In part shame at having been ao gullible. It Is such shhame felt by victims of atrocious quack swin dling that makes the prosecution of these ghouls so difficult. Their vic tims are too ashamed to go to court and tell the truth. One of the most successful quacks sensitizes his prospects by explaining to them that whatever complaints they happen to have originate In some vsgue poisoning of the system from failure to eliminate, or something like that. This charlatan haa been exploiting the Ignorance and cred ulity of the public along thla line for years. One would Imagine even the dumbest layman would begin to feel a bit bored by the same old song, but It seems not, for the suave quack la still singing It with all the gusto of a radio baritone, rendering On the Road to Mandalay, by request and with atmospheric preparation by the announcer. The music of this quack's hex-appeal Is always the same, but the words sometimes he mixes the words up aa tho he were actually poking fun at the dumb eggs who will presently be come hla customers. Here Is a. recent Instance, from en explanation the quack gave hla prospects for "all symptoms of all ailments.": "The mucus Is formed from a deep seated catarrhal Inflammation which, In Its turn comes from wrong foods and excessive quantities of foods from the congestion, autointoxica Williams Creek WILLIAMS CREEK, Oct. 17 (Spl ) Georne Cock man of Mascot te, Fla.. arrived last week to spend the win ter with hla uncle, George Cock man and family. , Jack Wilson's horse fell with him last week. All thla, the charlatan explains with tongue In cheek, means that the body la "attempting some form of toxic poison elimination." Toxic poison, you Idiot, meaning a poison that Is poisonous. Aa a rule the quack has the "toxic poison" absorbed from the colon into the blood stream. Thla time he has it absorbed from the blood into, goodness knows where. But what'a the odds. The wiseacres and the morons from whose ranks such humbugs draw their cash cus tomers are ao flattered by the defer ence paid their Intelligence that they'll never notice any little dis crepancies In the charlatan's ap proach. Answer There are several good brands of molasses now on the mark et, all free of sulphur dioxide. Would he "kid" me about thla and keep It from me If It were cancer? (J. a.) Answer No, the doctor you men tion Is a reputable physician and he would not withhold hla opinion if he believed you had cancer. It is true, the injection treatment Is for INTER NAL piles only, and the external kind must be removed surgically. (Copyright, John P. Dllle Co.)
