Again, that ubiquitous pest, the
mole, Is working havoc In our lawns
and flower borders. They and their
co-worltera. the ffeld mice, are caus
ing gardeners to scurry to the near-
e. seed store or druggist for weapons
to fight the enemy. Traps and poi
son bait are set out and meet with
varying success, but still these little
garden demons take toll of our most
precious bulbs and plants. Are ws to
go down In defeat before the on
slaught of these rapacious rodenta?
No. a thousand noes. We win rise
and smite the enemy, and our wea
pon will be the lowly moth ball
These and naphthalene flakes are to
the rodent what an angry skunk Is
to a picnic party. The ammunition

All the past summer I have carried
on this mild warfare, and It has
worked I Each day a thorough sur
vey of the gardena and lawn Is taken
In any spot where the sou is dis
turbed or broken a trowel Is Insert.

tulip bulba with t thought of glori
ous color for the spring garden, only
to discover that this particular bulb
la the pet diet of field mice and

Here Is a simple means of assuring
oneself of success In one's tulip
planting. Purchase a package of
naphthalene flakes. Remove the dirt
u the proper depth for the tulip
bulbs, and aprlnkle In a handful of
the flakea, partly cover the bulbs and
use another handful of flakes before
filling In the hole. If you are plant
Ing a few bulbs In separate holes,
teexpoonfu! of the naphthalene to
each bulb will be sufficient. This
plan has been used successfully In
large plantings In a lovely garden
near Portland. My hop Is that Med
ford gardeners will find this a means
of protection for their bulbs and that
the spring gardena may be a glorious

statement today In which he aald
that neither the bonus nor prohibi
tion will be "allowed to draw i
Legion Into politics at this time."

His statement follows;
"The mandates of the national con
vention held In Portland recently on
both the Immediate payment of ad
Justed compensation and the prohi
bition question are written In plain
words. When the proper and effec
tive time comes, these mandates will
be carried out and every Legion of
ficial, member and organization will
be requested and expected to support
the will of the majority aa expressed
by that convention.
"Neither la a political queaiion, so
far as the Legion Is concerned, and,
they will not be allowed to draw th
Legion into politics at this time."

Aid society held lui regular btislnes
meeting In the ladles parlor at th
Presbyterian church last Thursday
with a large attendance. Recently
the ladles of this society have com
pleted two beautiful quilt for sale.
At the meeting Thursday It wis
voted to dispense wltii the harvest
home supper this fall. This has been
an annual affair of tho Ladles' Aid
society for the paat several years, and
has always been attended by a largo
number from outside communities,
who will no doubt be sorry to learn
of the decision.
